** Jerald 'Jerry' Dolter

MASON CITY — Jerald "Jerry" Dolter, 64, of 380 S. Yorktown Pike No. 34, died Tuesday (Jan. 13, 1998) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at First United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia Ave., with the Rev. Douglas Anderson officiating.

There will be no visitation. Memorials may be sent to KCMR Radio Station in memory of Jerry Dolter. Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., is in charge of arrangements.

Jerald LeRoy "Jerry" Dolter was born April 21, 1933, in Mason City, the son of Harry and Luella (Shinn) Dolter. Jerry attended and graduated from Mason City High School in 1951. He then attended NIACC and graduated with an associate degree in business. He graduated from Mankato State University with a full degree in business and sociology.

Jerry served in the Korean War and received a Purple Heart. He had a vast knowledge and love of music and played the trumpet for many years. He also volunteered for eight years at KCMR Radio as an announcer. Jerry loved music, cooking, reading, playing games and enjoyed talking to people and being helpful. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Dolter, Mason City; parents, Harry and Luella Dolter, Mason City; two sons, Michael Dolter and wife, Cathie Ann, Albuquerque, N.M., Erich Dolter and wife, Debbie, Albuquerque, N.M; one daughter, Jeannette Wilson and husband, Jim, Spokane, Wash.; four step-children, Steven Frank, Eau Claire, Wis., Susan Fedders, Mason City, Debbie Frank, Cincinnati, Ohio, and Kathie Frank, Los Angeles, Calif.; grandchildren, Tyler Wilson, Hannah Wilson and Amanda Rose; step-grandchildren, Jennifer Skahen and husband, Sean, St. Cloud, Minn., Jessie, Christy, Rebecca and Brittany Fedders, Mason City; two step-great grandchildren, Alexa Wasicek and Thomas Skahen.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Robert J. Dolter.

** Joseph A. Bittner

MASON CITY — Joseph A. Bittner, 89, of 110 Ninth St. N.E., died Tuesday (Jan. 7, 1998) at the Good Shepherd Nursing Home, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, 1998, at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 419 N. Delaware Ave., with the Rev. Frederick Wood, officiating. Interment will be arranged at a later date.

There will be no visitation. Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., is in charge of arrangements.

Those wishing to send an expression of sympathy may wish to consider a donation in Joseph's memory to the Bethlehem Lutheran Church Building Fund.

Joseph A. Bittner was born March 15, 1908, at Clarinda, Iowa, the son of Joseph and Anna (Lund) Bittner. They moved to Springfield, Minn., where he attended parochial school and was confirmed at Evangelical Lutheran Zion Church.

In 1923-25, he attended Concordia Academy, St. Paul, Minn. He studied two years with Federal Schools, Inc., Minneapolis, Minn., and was employed in Sioux Falls and Aberdeen, S.D., in retail sales and advertising.

He was recruited by Dan Klempnauer to join him in Mason City at Damons. He was employed in advertising and display, sales and later as assistant manager. He was with Damons from 1936 until 1964, when he joined Tyler-Ryan Decorating from 1964 to 1978.

He married Theada Thomas in Kansas City, Mo., on April 4, 1942. She joined him in San Diego, Calif., where he served in the Navy from April 1942 until October of 1945, returning to Mason City and Damons.

Joe was a member of the VFW Post 733, a charter member and past president of the Mason City Exchange Club, past member of the Chamber of Commerce and Executive Club.

He joined Bethlehem Lutheran Church, first attending only the German services. A special joy for Joe was working at the church in the wee hours, creating the beautiful Resurrection Garden for the Easter Sunrise Services, starting April 1952. This has been continued for the past few years by the Alter Guild. Working with fellow members of the Exchange Club in creating the signs and floats through the years for the North Iowa Band Festival, the Mr. Toot, posters, signs, and floats for July 3rd celebration was something he looked forward to.

Joe enjoyed working with and assisting the several refugees Bethlehem sponsored, helping in the early years of Hawkeye Harvest Food Bank, and until the last few years, walking a cart in the grocery stores where he would see his many friends and old customers.

He loved his work, he loved people and sunflowers.

Survivors include his wife, Theada Bittner, of Mason City; one son, Joe Bittner Jr. and his wife, Judy, of Mason City; one grandson, Pete Lauritson, of Mason City; and one sister, Mildred Wendt, of Springfield, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Gerald; sisters, Agnes and Ada; and infant twin brothers.

** Bert L. Roberts Sr.

MASON CITY — Mason City businessman, Bert L. Roberts Sr., 77, of 903 N. Rhode Island Ave., died Thursday (Jan. 15, 1998) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Kenneth Gehling officiating. Interment will be in the Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, with full military rites by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, and on Saturday until time of services.

Memorials may be given to the Bert L. Roberts Sr. Memorial Fund.

Bert was born Sept. 6, 1920, in Mason City, son of Lee "Dutch" and Ina "Peg" (Daniels) Roberts.

Bert graduated from Mason City High School in 1938, where he lettered in football. He would later attend Mason City Junior College. Bert served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He married Judy Grien on Sept. 18, 1943. She preceded him in death on Oct. 12, 1964.

He began working as an apprentice at Ray E. Pauley & Co. in 1945. On April 1, 1956, he purchased Larson Furnace Company and renamed it Roberts Furnace Company.

He was in business for himself for more than 40 years. After his retirement and the sale of the business to Dave True, he still put on his bibs, cap and work boots and went to the "shop" to answer the phone and to coffee with his buddies. Everyone who knew Bert loved him.

He always had a tale to tell, a joke or a recent happening to share. He will be sadly missed by his coffee buddies.

Bert was a member of the V.F.W. and his greatest love, enjoyment and pride where his family. During his final days, they shared many remembrances with him.

Left to cherish his memory are two daughters, Sandy Funk and her husband, John, of Mason City; Jane Papouchis, of Mason City; one son, Bert L. "Buster" Roberts Jr., of Mason City; one sister, Beverly Sheehy, of Mason City; four grandchildren, Lisa Funk Hansen and her husband, Ryan, of Des Moines; Rob Funk, of Mason City; Nikki Papouchis, of Mason City; and Travis Roberts, of Mason City; one great-granddaughter, Jade Bertelsen, of Mason City; two sisters-in-law, Alice Mulhern and Clara Fransen, of Mason City; many nieces, nephews, and Bert's cat, Tanner.

He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, three grandchildren, several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.

** Pauline Keating Larsen

MASON CITY — Pauline Keating Larsen, 88, formerly of 146 Brook Terrace, died suddenly on Wednesday (Jan. 14, 1998) at the Delnor Hospital, Geneva, Ill.

A Memorial Mass of The Resurrection will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave., with the Rev. Dennis Cahill officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

There will be no visitation. Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., is in charge of arrangements.

Pauline was born Nov. 23, 1909, in Trenton, Neb. She spent her childhood years living in many different towns throughout Nebraska, Montana and Wyoming as her father worked for the American Crystal Sugar Company.

She attended college at the University of Montana, in Missoula.

She married Mainard Conlon Larsen on Dec. 27, 1937. Pauline and Maynard lived in Missoula and Moorehead, Minn., before moving to Mason City in 1949. Mr. Larsen was superintendent of the American Crystal Sugar Company in Mason City. He retired in 1968.

Pauline was active in many different activities. For many years, she was the welcome wagon hostess and greeted many new families that moved to Mason City. She and her husband were Meals on Wheels volunteers for several years after Mainard's retirement, making deliveries to the many shut-ins throughout Mason City. She also volunteered at the Frank Lloyd Wright House well into her eighties.

Her passion was bridge and she played in many different bridge groups right up to her moving from Mason City.

She also was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, Home Economics Club and Sewing Club.

Pauline moved to Asbury Court Retirement Center in North Aurora, Ill., to be close to her daughter, Patty, in December of 1996.

Survivors include three children, Linda Boyan and her husband, John, of Pleasant Hill, Calif.; John K. "Kenny" Larsen, The Woodlands, Texas; and Patricia Broers and her husband, Jon, of St. Charles, Ill.; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Mainard in 1989; one brother, George Keating; and one sister, Clara Imhoof.

** David Ray Smith

RICEVILLE — David Ray Smith, 59, died Monday (Jan. 12, 1998) at home.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Edythe Hill officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Riceville.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Lindstrom Funeral Home.

David was born on Sept. 13, 1938, at his grandparents home, near Gilmore City.

Survivors include his wife, Bonnie, of Lyle, Wash.; his children, Karl Elliott, of Carson, Wash.; Kari Huling, of Fairbanks, Alaska; Tony Smith, of Waterloo; and Carolyn Tierney, of Minneapolis, Minn.; three grandchildren; five stepchildren; and stepgrandchildren; his mother, Blanche Smith, of LeRoy, Minn.; one brother, Larry Smith; and two sisters, Leola Kock and Connie Knode, of all Riceville.

He was preceded in death by one daughter and his father.

** Mary Murray

CHARLES CITY — Mary Murray, 84, formerly of Charles City, died Wednesday (Jan. 14, 1998) at the Good Shepherd Nursing Home in Mason City.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at The Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Highway 18 and Clark Street, Charles City.

MASON CITY — E. Marian Frahm, 91, formerly of 1727 S. Carolina Ave., Mason City, died Tuesday (Jan. 13, 1998) at the Mother Frances Hospital in Tyler, Texas.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave.

MARBLE ROCK — Ruth E. Ewald, 93, of 82 N. Cedar Terrace, Charles City, formerly of Marble Rock, died Friday (Jan. 16, 1998) at the Eleventh Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Marble Rock, with the Rev. Rosemary Rohde-Frank officiating. Burial will be in the Westside Cemetery in Marble Rock.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Reid’s Funeral Chapel in Marble Rock, with a 7 p.m. public Scripture service. There will be further visitation one hour prior to services on Monday at the church.

Ruth Edith Thomas was born Oct. 26, 1904, in rural Coldwater Township in Butler County.

Survivors include two daughters, Doris Evans, of Sloan, and Elaine Zilm, of Yuma, Ariz.; two sons, Eugene Ewald, of Marble Rock, and Maynard Eward, of Rockford; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mildred Rodman, of Clarksville.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one sister, two brothers and two grandchildren.

** Hollis D. ‘Hod’ Strike

NASHUA — Hollis D. ‘Hod’ Strike, 92, of Nashua, passed away at his home in Nashua on Jan. 15, 1998, of natural causes.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at First Congregational Church in Nashua with burial in Greenwood Cemetery, also in Nashua.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Chenoweth & Son Funeral Home in Nashua, and one hour prior to services on Monday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

Hollis "Hod" Strike was born in Chickasaw County, east of Nashua, on Dec. 1, 1905, the son of Ceaphus John and Etta (Goodell) Strike.

He attended rural school in the Republic area and graduated from Nashua High School in 1924.

He was united in marriage to Avis Alice Stuelke on Dec. 10, 1927, in Charles City. To this union, five children were born.

Hod managed the Crystal Ice & Fuel Company in Nashua until 1950. This company furnished ice for most of northeastern Iowa.

He then worked as a custodian for Nashua Community Schools for 21 years, retiring in 1971.

He was a noted champion horseshoe pitcher.

He was a member of First Congregational Church, the Knights of Pythians, the school board and the Nashua Fire Department.

He is survived by his wife, Avis; two sons, Marvin Strike, of Waukon, and Burton Strike, of Newton; two daughters, Beverly Bennett, of Atlantic, and Marilyn Strike, of Mason City; nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Shirley Jean Strike, in 1955; his parents; three brothers, Lee, Harold and Vern Strike; and two sisters, Pearl Milligan and Ina Laydon.

** Donna M. Schilling

CHARLES CITY — Donna M. Schilling, 64, 3126 140th St., died Thursday (Jan. 15, 1998) at Floyd County Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Main and Gilbert streets, with the Rev. Dennis D. Niezwaag officiating. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from noon to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles City, with the family receiving friends from 5 to 8:30 p.m.

** Mary L. Murray

MASON CITY — Mary L. Murray, 84, formerly of Charles City, died Monday (Jan. 12, 1998) at Good Shepherd Health Center.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Immaculate Conception Church, Highway 18 and Clark, Charles City, with co-celebrants Monsignor Joseph J. Slepicka, and the Rev. Gerald Condon, officiating. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Charles City.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Major-Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, where a scripture wake service will be held at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Monday.

Mary L. Murray was born Nov. 21, 1913, the daughter of John and Laura (VanDanAcker) Joerger in Bellevue. Mary moved to Elma as a child and attended school in the Elma area. Mary married John Murray on Nov. 25, 1939, in Bellevue. After they were married they lived in Elma a short time, and then moved to Charles City in 1941, where they raised their seven children. Mary was a wonderful and very loving mother and grandmother. Mary was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City.

Survivors include two daughters, Kay Pulatie and her husband, Dave, of Phoenix, Ariz., and Mary Horvath and her husband, Tom, of Mason City; four sons, John David Murray and his wife, Jill, of Prior Lake, Minn., Raymond Murray and his wife, Trish, of Hampton, Michael Murray and his wife, Carol, of Lawrenceville, Ga., and Mark Murray and his wife, Cheri, of Russellville, Ark.; one daughter-in-law, Arla Murray of Mason City; 25 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; six sisters, Helen Kapler of St. Charles, Minn., Delberta Palmersheim of Elma, Irene Fisher of Stewartville, Minn., Dorothy Boom of Sartell, Minn., Gladys Armstrong and her husband, Frank, of Bakersfield, Calif., and Rita Kobliska and her husband, Jerry, of Lasosos, Calif.; four brothers, Willie Joerger of Bakersfield, Calif., Vince Yager and his wife, Shirley, of Simi Valley, Calif., Don Joerger and his wife, Marge, of Benita Springs, Fla., and Art Joerger and his wife, Sandy, of Cedar Rapids; and several nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John, in 1987; son, Francis, in 1993; one sister, Marge Connelly; and four brothers, Walt, Vern, and twins, Joe and John.

MASON CITY — E. Marian Frahm, 91, formerly of 1727 S. Carolina Ave., died Tuesday (Jan. 13, 1998) at Mother Frances Hospital, Tyler, Texas.

Marian Frahm was born May 2, 1906, the daughter of Charles W. And Elsie (Berquist) Bistline in Altoona, Pa. Marian moved with her family to Plymouth at the age of 12, and then to Mason City when she was 15. Marian graduated from Mason City High School and received her teaching certificate at the Normal School, which is now the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls. Marian taught school for six years in a one-room school house, did light housekeeping, and worked at the Sugar Beet plant. Marian was married to Peter Frahm on May 29, 1932, in Mason City. Marian was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Mason City, where she was very active, teaching Sunday school, and later became the elementary secretary for the Sunday school. She was also a member of the Kill Kare Klub, Mason City Garden Club, Roosevelt P.T.A., volunteered for Hospice of North Iowa and knitting several pairs of mittens for groups in need of them. In her recent years in Lindale, Texas she also was involved in knitting baby caps and socks for the newborns and premature babies and was active at the Hide-A-Way Community Church in Lindale.

Survivors include two daughters, Maxine Johnson and her husband, Robert, of Attleboro, Mass., and Allene Drew and her husband, John, of Lindale, Texas; three sons, Phillip Frahm and his wife, Elizabeth, of Cedar Falls, Charles Frahm and his wife, Lila, of Anaheim, Calif., and James Frahm and his wife, Gail, of Fairfax, Va.; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Marcella Gullickson and her husband, Joseph, of Northwood, and Evelyn Ludeman of Mesa, Ariz.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Peter, in 1989; and two brothers, Russell and Edward.

** Marie Ziegler

DENT, Minn. — Marie Ziegler, 81, formerly of the Clear Lake/Mason City area, died Thursday (Jan. 15, 1998) at her home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father David Rieder officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday with a rosary at 7 p.m. followed by a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., all at the church. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday. Schoeneberger Funeral Home, Perham, Minn. is in charge of the arrangements.

Marie Gagnon was born July 26, 1916, in Clear Lake, the daughter of Theodore and Nora (Porter) Gagnon. There she was raised and attended school, graduating from high school in 1934. Following school she worked for the ASCS Office in Mason City. She was united in marriage to Harold Ziegler on April 21, 1947, in the Holy Family Catholic Church in Mason City. They moved to the Dent area in 1976. He died on July 13, 1977.

She is survived by two daughters, Margaret (Carl) Anderson, and Nancy (Tom) Hurd, both of Mason City; and two sons, Terry (Lynette) of Eden Prairie, Minn., and Tom (Pam) of Waukesha, Wis.; one brother, Clair (Maxine) of West Minster, Calif.; and 10 grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; one brother, Dale; and a sister, Arlene Degan.

** Edna Sarah Meehan

DUMONT — Edna Sarah Meehan, 86, died Saturday (Jan. 17, 1998) at the Cedar Falls Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Dumont United Methodist Church with the Rev. Marilyn Winch officiating. Burial will be in the Dumont Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home.

Edna Sarah Meehan was born Jan. 2, 1912, in Barnesville, Minn.

Survivors include two sons, James Meehan and Don Meehan, both of Cedar Falls; one daughter, Susan Murphy of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; one brother, Francis Clemens of Dumont; one sister, Leda Bauer of Hinckley, Minn.; and six grandchildren.

Ruby Hanna, the daughter of Thomas and Romanca (Perry) Kittleson was born Oct. 6, 1912, in Mount Valley Township.

She was baptized and confirmed at Winnebago Lutheran Church, rural Lake Mills. On May 7, 1933, Ruby was married to Dewey Hanna at the Winnebago Church. They spent their life on a farm south of Winnebago Church until February, 1982, when they moved to their home in Lake Mills.

Ruby was a homemaker and was active in her church women’s groups.

She is survived by three sons, Richard Hanna of Joice, Stan and his wife, Darlene Hanna of Little Falls, Minn., and Tom and his wife, Marilyn Hanna, of Kensett; one daughter, Karen and her husband, Rollin Dyer, of Ankeny; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one sister, Burlette Thompson, and one aunt, Selina Bakken, both of Forest City.

Ruby was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dewey on March 29, 1984; one daughter-in-law, De Loris Hanna; and one son-in-law, Gary Waddingham.

** H. Lamont "Monty" Nielsen

FOREST CITY — H. Lamont "Monty" Nielsen, 42, died Friday (Jan. 16, 1998) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center.

Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Our Saviors Lutheran Church, Leland, with the Rev. Dan Christensen officiating.

H. Lamont "Monty" Nielsen was born in Britt on Dec. 7, 1955, the son of Harold and Lila (Eenhuis) Nielsen. He attended Woden-Crystal Lake Schools, participating in football, basketball and baseball. He graduated in 1974. He began working with J & J Livestock and later joined Umthun Trucking Company, working there until 1984. At that time he was employed with Winnebago Industries until 1989. He was a member of the Forest City Ambulance team, serving for a time as president of the association. In 1990, he received his EMT-I certification and began working with Midwest Ambulance. In May of 1990, Monty began working for the Forest City Community Hospital as a respiratory technician. Two years later, on June 1, 1992, he began working for Primedica Inc. and continued with that firm until his failing health forced him to resign. Monty enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his dogs. He was a dedicated professional who loved working with and helping people. He was a state certified EMS and BCLS Instructor. His grandchildren were very special to Monty.

He died at North Iowa Mercy Health Center in Mason City on Jan. 16, 1998, at the age of 42 years.

He is survived by his father and step-mother, Harold and Margaret Nielsen of Crystal Lake; a son, Aaron Nielsen, and a daughter, Amber Nielsen, both of Forest City; four brothers, Robert of Algona, Gordon of Crystal Lake, Brian of Crystal Lake, and Howard and his wife, Val, of Forest City; his grandmother, Elva Eenhuis of Forest City; several aunts, uncles and cousins; and two grandchildren, Kendra and Logan Nielsen.

Mearl "Sunny" Dixon was born on Oct. 23, 1941, on the family farm outside of Northwood, the son of Mearl "Monk" and Dorothea (Noe) Dixon. He was baptized on Sept. 14, 1947, and confirmed on Feb. 21, 1971. He attended school in both the Northwood and Manly school systems. Following school he began working as a farmhand. He was united in marriage to Sharon Arndt on Aug. 27, 1960, at Our Saviours Lutheran Church in Mason City. They made their home in Manly until 1964, when they moved to Mason City, where he worked for the Sedars Motor Company until 1966, when they moved to Northwood where he began working as a farmhand. In 1973, they moved to the Sheffield area where he worked for several farmers. Mearl enjoyed spending time with his family, farming, mowing and his tractor collection.

He is survived by his wife, Sharon, of Sheffield; one daughter, Colleen Hanig and her husband, Jim, of Sheffield; three sons, Jerry Dixon and his wife, Whitney, Dean Dixon and his wife, Melanie, and Scott Dixon and his wife, Cindi, all of Sheffield; 10 grandchildren; his father, Mearl "Monk" Dixon of Sheffield; two sisters, Doris Magnuson of Mason City, and Joan Forde and her husband, Ron, of Katy, Texas.

Dean Hugi was born April 5, 1927, in Mason City, the son of Newell and Metta (Madison) Hugi. Dean graduated from Mason City High School in 1945, then enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served during World War II. Upon his discharge, Dean returned to Mason City and attended Mason City Junior College. Dean married Merlemae Kolwinska on Aug. 15, 1947, in Mason City. Dean worked for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company for 35 years, retiring in 1982. Following retirement, in 1985, he began work for Findley Engineering and continued working there until 1989. Dean was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, a life-time member of the V.F.W., a member of Elks Lodge B.P.O.E. No. 375, Masonic Lodge and Pioneers of Northwestern Bell. Dean enjoyed boating, golfing and watching sports, especially high school sports.

Survivors include his wife, Merlemae Hugi, of Mason City; two sons, Gary L. Hugi of Mason City and Craig A. Hugi and his wife, Barbara, of Cedar Falls; grandchildren, Jason Hugi and his wife, Lisa, of Mason City, Sarah Hugi of Mason City, Anne Crum of Cedar Falls and Joseph Crum of Milwaukee, Wis.; great-grandchildren, Brandon and Emily, of Mason City; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

They lived in Waterloo for a number of years and lived in Sioux Falls, S.D., and Minnesota before moving to Mason City in 1980. She also worked doing laundry at Hinson Manufacturing in Waterloo.

Survivors include one sister, Betty Lewis of Minnesota; one sister-in-law, Maxine Munger of Waterloo; her stepmother, Sara Munger of Colorado Springs, Colo.; a stepbrother, Billy Payton of Missouri; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Clarence, in March, 1995; six sisters and two brothers.

** Ruth E. Ewald

MARBLE ROCK — Funeral services for Mrs. Ruth E. Ewald, 93, of 82 North Cedar Terrace, Charles City, formerly of Marble Rock, will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at the United Methodist Church with the Rev. Rosemary Rohde-Frank officiating. Burial will be in Westside Cemetery.

Ruth Edith Thomas was born Oct. 26, 1904, in rural Coldwater Township, Butler County, a daughter of Arthur and Bertha (McCracken) Thomas, and died Friday (Jan. 16, 1997) at the Eleventh Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

She received her education in the Greene Public Schools, graduating in 1923. She taught in rural schools until her marriage to Edgar Bert Ewald on June 18, 1925, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.

They started farming north of Marble Rock and continued until his death in August, 1951. She continued to live on the farm and worked as a cook at the Winnebago Scout Camp, rural Marble Rock, and at the Floyd County Farm. In 1957, she moved to Mountain Home, Ark., where she lived for several years before moving to Charles City. During this time she was a cook at the Catholic rectory in Charles City.

Following her retirement she enjoyed traveling throughout the United States on bus tours, and traveling overseas to Europe, Hawaii, and the Caribbean. She was a member of the Marble Rock United Methodist Church and a former member of the Rebekkah Lodge in Marble Rock.

Living family members include two daughters, Doris Evans of Sloan and Elaine Zilm of Yuma, Ariz.; two sons, Eugene Ewald of Marble Rock and Maynard Ewald of Rockford; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mildred Rodman of Clarksville.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one sister, Marguerite Ewald; two brothers, Ira Thomas and Lloyd Thomas; and two grandchildren.

Vera Marie McCorkle was born Nov. 13, 1901, in Sexton, the daughter of Frank E. and Anna (Goeddertz) McCorkle. Vera attended Algona schools and graduated from St. Mary’s High School in Bird Island, Minn. She attended Mankato State College, Mankato, Minn.

Vera worked 30 years as a secretary at the former W.L. Patton Company, Mason City, and later worked in the personnel department at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, Mason City, for nine years, retiring in 1967.

She enjoyed flowers and gardening. Vera did volunteer work at Mason City Public Library, McNider Art Museum, St. Joseph Mercy Hospital and Holy Family Catholic Church, all in Mason City.

Vera was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, St. Theresa Circle, Catholic Daughters of the Americas Joan of Arc Court No. 152; RSVP and the Joyce Kilmer Study Club.

She is survived by one niece, Elizabeth Groden and her husband, Thomas, of Deerfield, Ill.; one great-niece, Kathleen Willis and her husband, David, and their son, Colin, her great-great-nephew, all of Deerfield, Ill.; and one great-nephew, Thomas J. Groden, Sunnyvale, Calif.

Rebecca participated in Special Olympics track and field and bowling. She had qualified for state in bowling this year, but was unable to participate because of ill health. Rebecca enjoyed roller blading, roller skating, bicycling, swimming, playing frisbee, throwing the ball in the back yard, helping her dad wax the car, playing her brother’s video games and watching videos. She loved her cat Tiger.

TITONKA — Jessie Dohlman, 84, died Sunday (Jan. 18, 1998) at the Titonka Care Center.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church with the Rev. Timm Wilkin officiating. Burial will be at a later date.

There will be a memorial visitation at the church at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday. The Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Jessie was born on Jan. 4, 1914, near Ackley, the daughter of Engleke and Denea (Hartema) Stubbe. She attended rural school. Jessie was married to Eime G. Dohlman on June 20, 1934, at Dumont. They farmed near Dumont and Geneva. Eime died in 1959. Jessie then moved to Hampton where she worked as a cook at Faye’s Cafe. She then moved to Iowa Falls where she was the baker at the Boondocks Restaurant. She moved to Titonka in 1992.

Jessie is survived by one daughter, Roberta Movick of Titonka; two grandchildren, Deb and her husband, James Hill, and Mike and his wife, Diana Movick, both of Garner; four great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Donald Dohlman of Loomis, Calif., and Edward Dohlman of Termo, Calif.

Jessie was preceded in death by her parents, husband, five sisters and four brothers.

** Carmella M. Groesbeck

MASON CITY — Carmella M. Groesbeck, 68, of 1711 S. Delaware Ave., died Saturday (Jan. 17, 1998) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with the Rev. David Anderson of St. James Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be in the Union Cemetery, Alta Vista.

Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. today at the funeral chapel, and continue one hour prior to services on Tuesday.

Memorials may be given to the Carmella M. Groesbeck Memorial Fund.

Carmella M. Groesbeck was born on April 21, 1929, at New Hampton, the daughter of John and Esther Christine (Vick) Althof. In 1948, Carmella was married to Brice Stevenson at the Immaculate Conception Church, Alma. She had lived in Mason City since 1968.

Carmella enjoyed traveling to Las Vegas and playing the slot machines. She also loved to read and spend time with her dog, Skippy. She was also a very good cook.

Survivors include five children, Brice Stevenson of Mason City, Katherine Deetz and her husband, David, of Forest City, Patricia Stevenson of Mason City, James Stevenson and his wife, Louise, of Mason City and Gail Stevenson of Mason City; 13 grandchildren, David, Steve, Nadene and James Stevenson Jr., all of Mason City, Robbie Burns of Greenville, N.C., Robin Dall-Winther of Mason City, P.J. Burns of Mason City, Wendy Spilman of Illinois, Mary Ann and Betsy Spilman of Forest City and Corey, Jeffery and Mickey Stevenson, all of Mason City; seven great-grandchildren, Wesley, Christina, Nicole, Ashley, Jacob, Corey and Colton; one sister, Norma Ungs and her husband, Dennis, of Waterloo; two brothers, Donald Althoff of Wisconsin and Jack Althoff of North Dakota; and her beloved dog, Skippy.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; an infant son; and two great-granddaughters, Samantha Deetz and Lauren Dall-Winther.

Genealogy note: I called the funeral home to see why her name was Groesbeck when she married a Stevenson and her children’s names are all Stevenson—they said to leave as it is—if different they’ll let me know.

SHEFFIELD — Mearl E. Dixon, 56, died Friday (Jan. 16, 1998) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Steve Hollingsworth officiating. Burial will be in the Hillside Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Grarup Funeral Home.

Mearl "Sonny" Dixon was born on Oct. 23, 1941, on the family farm outside of Northwood, the son of Mearl "Monk" and Dorothea (Noe) Dixon. He was baptized on Sept. 14, 1947, and confirmed on Feb. 21, 1971. He attended school in both the Northwood and Manly school systems. Following school he began working as a farmhand. He was united in marriage to Sharon Arndt on Aug. 27, 1960, at Our Saviours Lutheran Church in Mason City. They made their home in Manly until 1964, when they moved to Mason City, where he worked for the Sedars Motor Company until 1966, when they moved to Northwood where he began working as a farmhand. In 1973, they moved to the Sheffield area where he worked for several farmers. Mearl enjoyed spending time with his family, farming, mowing and his tractor collection.

He is survived by his wife, Sharon, of Sheffield; one daughter, Coleen Hanig and her husband, Jim, of Sheffield; three sons, Jerry Dixon and his wife, Whitney, Dean Dixon and his wife, Melanie, and Scott Dixon and his wife, Cindy, all of Sheffield; 10 grandchildren; his father, Mearl "Monk" Dixon of Sheffield; two sisters, Doris Magnuson of Mason City and Joan Forde and her husband, Ron, of Katy, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his mother and one sister.

OSAGE — Lillie L. Riley, 93, died Saturday (Jan. 17, 1998) at the Riceville Nursing Home.

** Dean R. Hugi

MASON CITY — Dean R. Hugi, 70, of 380 Yorktown Pike, died Monday (Jan. 12, 1998) at McAllen Heart Hospital in McAllen, Texas.

Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Grace United Methodist Church, 200 14th St. N.W., with the Rev. Herbert Shafer officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

There will be no visitation. Major-Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., is in charge of arrangements.

Dean Hugi was born April 5, 1927, in Mason City, the son of Newell and Metta (Madison) Hugi. Dean graduated from Mason City High School in 1945, then enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served during World War II. Upon his discharge, Dean returned to Mason City and attended Mason City Junior College. Dean married Merlemae Kolwinska on Aug. 15, 1947, in Mason City. Dean worked for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company for 35 years, retiring in 1982. Following retirement, in 1985, he began work for Findley Engineering and continued working there until 1989. Dean was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, a life-time member of the V.F.W., a member of Elks Lodge B.P.O.E. #375, Masonic Lodge and Pioneers of Northwestern Bell. Dean enjoyed boating, golfing and watching sports, especially high school.

Survivors include his wife, Merlemae Hugi, of Mason City; two sons, Gary L. Hugi of Mason City, and Craig A. Hugi and his wife, Barbara, of Cedar Falls; grandchildren, Jason Hugi and his wife, Lisa, of Mason City, Sarah Hugi of Mason City, Anne Crum of Cedar Falls, and Joseph Crum of Milwaukee, Wis.; great-grandchildren, Brandon and Emily, of Mason City; and nieces and nephews.

** Rose F. Fessenden

MASON CITY — Rose F. Fessenden, 80, of 118 16th St. N.E., Mason City, died Saturday (Jan. 17, 1998) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., with the Rev. Dennis H. Cahill, of Holy Family Catholic Church, officiating. Interment will follow at the Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from noon until 8 p.m. today with a Scripture Wake service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue from 9 a.m. Wednesday until the time of service.

Rose was born March 10, 1917, in Mason City, the daughter of Frank and Marie (Honc) Krivohlavy.

Rose lived every moment to its fullest. She touched many lives through her kindness and generosity. She will be remembered for her fun-loving personality, her natural ability to give words of encouragement, and to bring a smile to those she encountered.

Her family and friends were very important as expressed by this poem she had written:

Of my everlasting love
From the heart
And up above
He gave me many friends so dear
When I needed help
They're always near

A friend in perfect harmony

Rose had many passions in life, which included sewing, cooking (putting on a feed), and playing bingo.

Rose brought great joy to her family with her musical talents which were highlighted by her undying love for playing the harmonica. Rose loved writing but thoroughly enjoyed writing poetry.

Rose was a precious wife, mother and grandmother.

She will be sadly missed by her husband, Fay "Buzz"; one daughter, Mardell Pulliam, of Plymouth; one sister, Bessie Jones, of Mason City; 10 grandchildren, Julie Wagman, of Duluth Minn., Connie Frickie, of Mason City, Jim Ward, of Fertile, Jean Wright, of Osage, Beth Ward, of Mason City, Jeff Ward, of Indiana, and Yolanda Barros, Rosie Coda, Michael Pulliam and Norma Pulliam, all of California; 18 great grandchildren; and four stepgreat grandchildren.

Mrs. Fessenden was preceded in death by her parents, first husband Milton "Pannsy" Pulliam; one daughter, Eva Ward; one son, Michael Pulliam; three sisters, Annie Kiroff, Marie Dietz and Helen Abendroth; three brothers, Rudy, Frank and John Krivohlavy.

CLEAR LAKE — Rebecca Sue Fredriksen, 13, of 16 S. 20th St., died Saturday (Jan. 17, 1998) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at United Methodist Church with the Rev. Fred Lewis officiating. Interment will be in Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation was held after 3 p.m. Monday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St.

The family suggests memorials to the Ronald McDonald House in Iowa City.

Rebecca was born Jan. 11, 1985, in Mason City, the daughter of Paul and Ranae (Rozevink) Fredriksen. She was in the seventh grade in Clear Lake.

Rebecca participated in Special Olympics track and field and bowling. She had qualified for state in bowling this year, but was unable to participate because of ill health. Rebecca enjoyed roller blading, roller skating, bicycling, swimming, playing frisbee, throwing the ball in the back yard, helping her dad wax the car, playing her brother’s video games and watching videos. She loved her cat Tiger.

CHARLES CITY — John A. Haase, 89, 106 Seventh Ave., died Sunday (Jan. 18, 1998) at Floyd County Memorial Hospital.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Main and Gilbert streets, with the Rev. Dennis D. Niezwaag and the Rev. Karen Rask Behling officiating.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to services on Wednesday morning at the church.

It was John’s wish that his body be donated to the Mayo Clinic for the advancement of medical research.

John August William Haase was born Jan. 14, 1909, in rural Shawano County in Wisconsin.

Survivors include his wife, Marie, of Charles City; one daughter, Anne Exline, of Charles City; one son, John A. Haase, of Fort Collins, Colo.; one stepdaughter, Sheryl Spivak, of Washington, D.C.; one stepson, Tom Elliott, of Fargo, N.D.; three sisters, Martha, Emma, and Ella; one brother, Christ, all of Wisconsin; four grandsons; six great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; three stepgrandchildren; and one stepgreat-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parent, his first wife and two sisters.

MASON CITY — Roger D. Pedelty, 79, of 324 Second St. N.E., died Sunday (Jan. 18, 1998) at the Good Shepherd Health Center.

At Roger’s request, no services are scheduled. His body was donated as a medical donation to the University of Iowa in Iowa City.

There will be no visitation. Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., is in charge of arrangements.

Roger D. Pedelty was born Dec. 26, 1918, in Mason City, the son of George L. and Clara M. (Aldrich) Pedelty.

Roger graduated from Mason City High School in 1937, then attended Mason City Junior College.

Roger served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II and was discharged in 1945.

He married Irene M. Edel on Sept. 3, 1942, in Columbia, S.C.

Roger returned to Mason City and began working for American Crystal Sugar. He was office manager and was Iowa District Sales Representative upon his retirement in 1983, after 38 years with the company.

Roger was a former Mason City Councilman, a seat he held for 16 years, a member of the V.F.W., Y.M.C.A. and past commander and quartermaster for many years at the V.F.W.

Survivors include his son, James L. Pedelty and his wife, Mary Frances, of Carroll; son, Jay D. Pedelty, of Longmont, Colo.; daughter, Janet C. Vice and her husband, Emile, of New Orleans, La.; daughter, Jean M. Pedelty, of Saratoga, Calif.; son, Dr. Jeffrey A. Pedelty, of Bowie, Md.; daughter, Julie A. Feilner and her husband, Glenn, of Omaha, Neb.; eight grandchildren; and a special friend, Dorothy Lindquist, of Mason City.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Irene, in 1993; one brother and four sisters.

MASON CITY — Louise B. Kahle, 97, of 302 Second St. N.E. , died Saturday (Jan. 17, 1998) at the Good Shepherd Health Care Center.

Louise B. Kahle was born Nov. 3, 1900, in Neulusheim, Baden, Germany, the daughter of Johann Conrad and Elizabeth (Schmidt) Buehler.

In September of 1903, the family came to Mason City and settled here. Louise attended country school for several years, then McKinley School before graduating from Mason City High School in 1920.

After high school, Louise was employed by Jacob E. Decker & Son in the main office as assistant bookkeeper, working from 1921 until her retirement in 1934.

She married Gustav "Gus" Kahle on June 15, 1930, at Zion Methodist Church in Mason City. Mr. Kahle died in November 1988.

Louise was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Ruth Church Circle, treasurer for the Ladies Aid, former Grandmothers Club member and the Breakfast Club. Louise also was an organist at Zion Methodist Church for more than 10 years.

Survivors include daughter, Elizabeth Hanson and her husband, Richard, of Plymouth, Minn.; granddaughter, Julie Ann Schedler and her husband, Matthew, of Golden Valley, Minn.; a sister, Martha E. Butler, of Mason City; one great-grandson, Daniel Schedler, of Golden Valley, Minn.; nephews, David Bishop of Victoria, Minn., and Wally Bishop, of Shakopee, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and one sister, Lydia Bishop.

Hulda T. Holmlund was born May 22, 1906, in Mason City, the daughter of John A. and Tena (Twedten) Holmlund.

She graduated from Mason City High School in 1925. Hulda worked for S.S. Kresge Co. for a short time before going to work at Damon’s Department Store. She retired from the store in 1973.

She was a life-long member of Trinity Lutheran Church, where she served in the education program for more 55 years. She also was a member of Trinity Altar Guild.

Survivors include one sister, Myrtle J. Holmlund, of Mason City; one brother, William T. Holmlund, of Lake Mills; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, J. Kenneth and Elmer C. Holmlund.

** Marvin Irving Medlang

NORTHWOOD — Marvin Irving Medlang, 72, of Northwood, died Saturday (Jan. 17, 1998) at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Elk Creek Lutheran Church, rural Kensett, with the Rev. Selmer Hernes officiating. Burial will be in the Elk Creek Cemetery.

Vistiation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, Highway 65 South, Northwood.

Marvin was born on Nov. 21, 1925, the second son of M.E. and Mabel Stadheim Medlang, in Brookfield Township, Worth County, Iowa.

He was baptized as an infant and confirmed in 1939 by Pastor Thor Sigmond at Elk Creek Lutheran Church, rural Kensett, remaining faithful in his hope and trust to the end.

His life’s work included developing with his parents and older brother, James, the largest Brown Swiss dairy herd in the state of Iowa. That involved much field work, cream to the creameries, milking cows, hauling veal calves, trucking championship cows to dairy shows and hauling cull cows to bigger markets. One champion bull was Titan, owned with Ralph Bright of Eldora.

Marvin lived with Melvin and Mabel and James’ family of eight children until 1977, when he moved to his grandparents Stadheim house on South Eighth Street in Northwood. He retired in 1983.

Marvin is survived by his older brother, James and his wife, Lucille, of Kensett; his nieces, Grace Pixley and her husband, Bruce, of Grafton; Marie Stumo, of rural Northwood; Joanna Schmidt and her husband, Joe, of Kensett; Lois McNutt and her husband, Dave, of Kensett; Inez Metzger and her husband, David, of Burlington; nephews, Charles and his wife, Linda Mills Medlang, of Kensett; Morris and his wife, Jenelle Medlang, of Kensett; James Junior and his wife, Linda Scott Medlang, of Kenosha, Wis.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and twin sisters in infancy.
