** Helga Peterson

MASON CITY — Helga Peterson, 91, of 302 Second St. N.E., died Wednesday (Sept. 9, 1998) at the Good Shepherd Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Ken Hatland, of Trinity Lutheran Church, officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Memorials may be given to the Helga Peterson Memorial Fund.

Helga Peterson was born on Oct. 12, 1906 in Skien, Norway, the daughter of John and Amanda (Nilsen) Helgeson.

Helga moved with her family to Lyle, Minn. in September of 1911. Helga attended school in Adams, Minn.

She was married to Lester G. Peterson on Oct. 4, 1927 in Lyle, Minn. Helga and Lester moved to Mason City in 1949 and she has lived here since. Helga enjoyed sewing and her grandchildren.

Helga was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

Survivors include one son, Robert B. Peterson and his wife, Loretta, of Austin, Minn.; one daughter, Virginia Anderson and her husband, Calvin, of Mason City; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ragna White, of Aberdeen, Wash., and Agnes Wager, of Lakewood, Colo.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester, in 1983; daughter, Marjorie Williams, in 1986; one granddaughter, Charlotte Anderson; five brothers; and two sisters.

** Paul B. Mackey

MASON CITY — Paul B. Mackey, 68, of Mason City, died Wednesday (Sept. 9, 1998) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave., with the Rev. David Beckman and Monsignor Joseph Slepicka, officiating.

There will be no visitation. His body was cremated.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Men's Garden Club of North Iowa.

Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., is in charge of arrangements.

Paul B. Mackey was born June 6, 1930 in Kansas City, Mo., the son of Bard D. and Ruth L. (Miller) Mackey.

On Aug. 5, 1955, he married Betty M. Martin at St. Mary's in Lamont, Iowa.

Paul was a high school principal and music instructor in Stanley from 1954 to 1956. From 1956-1960, he was the music instructor at Mechanicsville. Later from 1960 to 1965, he taught music and English at the men's reformatory in Anamosa.

From 1965-1968, he was the juvenile probation officer for Linn County. During 1968-1971, Paul served as the business manager and public relations for Catholic Charities in Dubuque.

He moved to Mason City in 1971, where he was a supervisor and a caseworker for Catholic Charities. He retired in 1982, as the supervisor of the Northwest District for the Archdiocese of Dubuque Catholic Charities.

Paul was a DJ for KCMR radio station in Mason City for five years.

He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, Mason City.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Mackey, Mason City; 10 children, Bard Mackey and his wife, Nadine, of Waverly; John Mackey, of Clear Lake; Kurt Mackey and his wife, Helen, of Ames; Teresa Mackey, of Williamsburg; George Mackey and his wife, Virginia, of Northfield, Vt; Anne Marie DeMaris, Mason City; Jeannette Dunn and her husband, Ron, Stanton, Calif. ; Dean Mackey and his wife, Katie, of North Chelmsford, Mass.; Neal Mackey and his wife, Cheryl, of Cedar Rapids; and Kathleen Mackey, of Sioux Falls, S.D.; 15 grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Delores Gerstenberger, Hazelton; three nephews, Dan Gerstenberger, of Florida.; and John Gerstenberger, Hazelton; and Bill Gerstenberger, Oelwein,

** Corliss S. Clammer

CHARLES CITY — Corliss S. Clammer, 84, of 610 Eighth Ave., died Tuesday (Sept. 8, 1998) at Floyd County Memorial Hospital.

There are no funeral services planned. The Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St., is in charge of arrangements.

Corliss Steven Clammer was born Oct. 29, 1913, at Charles City.

He is survived by his wife, Gayle, of Charles City; two sons, Steven Clammer, of Springtown, Texas and Mark Clammer, of Flagstaff, Ariz.; a sister, Phyllis Pett, of Elk Run Heights; and a brother, Tom Clammer, of Charles City.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

** Elmer E. Nedved

HAYFIELD — Elmer E. Nedved, 72, of Hayfield, died Friday (Sept. 11, 1998) at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital, Britt.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Evangelical Free Church, Britt, with Pastor Drew Zahn, of the Upper Flat Evangelical Free Church, officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Britt.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel, 160 E. Fourth St., Garner, and continue one hour prior to services on Monday at the church.

Elmer E. Nedved, the son of Aldrich and Lillian (Tlach) Nedved was born Sept. 9, 1926, at Britt. He attended rural school near Duncan and later graduated from Hayfield Consolidated School in 1944.

On Dec. 5, 1953, he was married to Betty Smit from Meservey at the Presbyterian Church, in Albert Lea, Minn.

Elmer lived in the Duncan and Hayfield area all his life where he was a farmer and worked as a security guard at Winnebago Industries.

After a stroke in August of 1981, he retired and moved with Betty into Hayfield in 1982.

He enjoyed his family, being around his grandchildren, wildlife, taking short trips and loved getting into a car and going for a ride.

He did have a hard time putting into words what he felt but as a family we knew he appreciated each and every one of the family members.

He is survived by his wife, Betty, of Hayfield; four children, Arlyn Nedved and his wife, Mary, of Garner; David Nedved and his wife, Bertie, of Garner; Jody Young and her husband, Dr. Alan, of Garner; and Judy Boekelman and her husband, Myron, of Lakota; eight grandchildren, Jill, Kim and Laura Nedved, Nathan, Aaron and Bradley Nedved, Michelle and Rachel Boekelman; and expecting a ninth grandchild; two brothers, Donald Nedved and his wife, Donna Mae, of Britt and Aldrich Nedved Jr. and his wife, Joanne, of Kansas City, Mo.; his mother-in-law, Ida Smit, of Meservey; a sister-in-law, Leola Nedved, of Britt; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Arnold Nedved.

** Ruth Clapper Armentrout

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Ruth Clapper Armentrout, 78, of Sacramento, Calif. passed away Thursday (Sept. 10, 1998), after a lengthy illness.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15, 1998, at the First United Methodist Church of Orangevale, 9041 Central Ave., Orangevale, Calif.

Born Aug. 7, 1920, in Mason City, Iowa, Ruth graduated from Mason City Junior College, in Mason City, in 1941, with a primary teaching credential.

During World War II, she taught school in a one-room schoolhouse in a rural area outside Mason City. Ruth's daughter, Jean and grandson, Jonathan, have since followed her lead and chosen teaching as their careers.

Ruth lived in Seattle, Wash., and San Bernardino, Calif., but spent the last 33 years in California as a Sacramento resident.

She devoted her life in service to her family, community and church.

She was a Cub Scout Den mother, Brownie leader, Girl Scout leader, member of the Eastern Star and Rainbow Girl advisor. She was an active member of the League of Women Voters, a lifetime member of the Parent Teachers Association and a Sunday school teacher and teen counselor in the United Methodist Church.

Ruth was active in the United Methodist Church and served on countless church committees and service projects.

Ruth is survived by her three children, Jean Briggs and Richard and Robert Armentrout; two grandchildren, Wendy Runyon and Jonathan Briggs; and by her brother, Charles Clapper.

Ruth was predeceased by her husband, John.

The family wishes to express its thanks to Lillie Williams and her staff, at Golf View Manor whose efforts increased Ruth's quality of life in recent years.

Donations in Ruth's name can be made to the American Heart Association or the Alzheimer's Association.

** Helen A. Smith

CEDAR FALLS — Helen A. Smith, 87, died Tuesday (Sept. 8, 1998) at Sartori Hospital, Cedar Falls.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today at Cedar Falls First United Methodist Church. Inurnment will be at a later date at the Kendallville-Eddy Cemetery, rural Cresco, Iowa.

Richardson Funeral Home, Cedar Falls, is in charge of arrangements.

Helen A. Smith was born Aug. 26, 1911, near Kendallville, Iowa, daughter of Charles A. and Maude F. (Tinker) Curtis. She attended rural Fremont Township school and then graduated from Cresco High School in 1929. She taught rural schools from 1929-1935. She attended Iowa State Teacher's College three summer sessions.

On Jan. 29, 1936, Helen married Albert C. Smith at the Methodist parsonage in Cresco, Iowa. They farmed northeast of Cresco until 1943, when they moved to a farm near Ridgeway, Iowa. In 1956 they moved to Cedar Falls, Iowa. Albert died on Jan. 28, 1996. Helen went to live at The Western Home on Nov. 27, 1997.

She was a member of Cedar Falls United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women. She had done volunteer work at The Western Home. She enjoyed trips taken to many states and Canada.

Left to cherish her memory are three daughters, Joyce C. Hopp and her husband, Harold, of Mason City; Jean C. Childers, of Pembroke, Mass.; and June Belz and her husband, Larry, of Cedar Falls; seven grandchildren, Brenda Arjes and her husband, Douglas, of Kansas City, Mo.; Mona Follmann and her husband, Douglas, of Stanhope, Iowa; Dana Torkelson and her husband, Wade, of Helen, Mont.; Lora Childers and her husband, John Einhorn, of Ventura, Calif.; Jo Betancourt and her husband, Gilbert, of Cedar Falls; and Michael Burbridge and Michelle Castillo, of La Habre, Calif.; six great-grandchildren, Sam and Michael Arjes, Andrew and Nicole Follmann, Rene and Mariah Betancourt; two sisters-in-law, Ellen Porter, of Cresco and Clara Grant, of Dallas, Texas.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one brother, Earl; one sister, Edith; and one great-grandson, Jacob L. Burbridge.

** Leota E. Jordahl

BUFFALO CENTER — Leota E. Jordahl, 89, of Buffalo Center, died Sunday (Sept. 6, 1998) at the Lake Mills Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the First Congregational Church, Buffalo Center, with Pastor David Langer, officiating. Interment will be in Graceland Cemetery, Buffalo Center.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Winter Funeral Home, Buffalo Center, and one hour prior to services on Monday at the church.

Leota E. Jordahl was born June 11, 1909, in Titonka.

She is survived by her children, Dorance, of Duluth, Minn.; Ronald, of Charlotte, N.C.; Clarice Brown, of Leland; Loren, of Leland; and Dorothy Blom, of Albert Lea, Minn.; 12 grandchildren; three brothers, Cecil Lamoreaux, of Milledgeville, Ill., Lloyd Lamoreaux, of Marshalltown; and Arthur Mitchell, of Lake Ridge, Va.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and adopted parents.

** Alice Mae Corkindale Street

MENOMONEE FALLS, Wis. — Alice Mae Corkindale Street, 78, of Menomonee Falls, Wis., died Wednesday (Sept. 9, 1998) at Menomonee Falls Health Care Center.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 14, 1998, at the Health Care Center.

Alice Street was born Jan. 19, 1920, at Swaledale, Iowa.

She is survived by one son, Gerald Lucas and his wife, Linda; and one grandson, Donald, of Menomonee Falls, Wis.; a sister, Elizabeth Hansen, of Mason City; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Jean Miller, of San Francisco.

** Herman T. Gronewold

DUMONT — Herman T. Gronewold, 61, of Dumont, died Friday (Sept. 11, 1998) at the Franklin General Hospital, Hampton.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Dumont United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Robert Connor, officiating. Burial will be in the Dumont Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 1 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home, Dumont.

Herman T. Gronewold was born Jan. 25, 1937, in Franklin County.

Survivors include two daughters, Jennifer Callahan, of Independence; and Heather Gronewold, of Waterloo; one son, Jerold Gronewold, of Des Moines; his mother, Jennie Gronewold, of Dumont; and two brothers, Wilbur Gronewold, of Ackley, and John Gronewold, of Hansell; and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, and one sister.

LAKE MILLS — Irene Margaret Trytten, 75, of Lake Mills, died Friday (Sept. 11, 1998) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Salem Lutheran Church, Lake Mills. Burial will be in Salem Memorial Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, Lake Mills, and one hour prior to services on Monday at the church.

** Claudia H. Stroud

MARBLE ROCK — Claudia H. Stroud, 92, of Marble Rock, died Friday (Sept. 11, 1998) at the Avera Holy Family Health Services, Estherville.

Graveside services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Hillside Cemetery, Marble Rock, with the Rev. William Green, former pastor of Marble Rock United Methodist Church, officiating.

There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. Reid's Funeral Chapel, Marble Rock, is in charge of arrangements.

Claudia H. Bisenius was born Jan. 24, 1906, at Ionia.

Survivors include her son, Roy Stroud, of Estherville; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, one sister, one sister in infancy, and one brother.

** Carma Marie Adams

LAKE MILLS — Carma Marie Adams, 79, died Saturday (Sept. 12, 1998) at the Lake Mills Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Salem Lutheran Church with the Rev. Sara Beth Akre and the Rev. Roger Dykstra officiating. Interment will be in Salem Memorial Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Mittelstadt Funeral Home, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Carma Marie Adams was born April 10, 1919, in rural Lake Mills.

Survivors include five siblings, James Adams of Lake Mills, Cora Rice of Lake Mills, Eva Hareid of Albert Lea, Minn., Don Adams of Lake Mills and Blanche Hareid of Brooklyn Park, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

LONE ROCK — Woodrow Pettit, 86, died Saturday (Sept. 12, 1998) at his home.

** Joseph Edward Berry

HAMPTON — Joseph Edward Berry, 84, died Friday (Sept. 11, 1998) at Franklin General Hospital.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church with the Rev. Gerald Condon officiating. Burial will be in the Hampton Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home, where a scriptural wake service will be held at 7 p.m.

Joseph Edward Berry was born June 12, 1914, in Mason City.

Survivors include his wife, Mildred Berry, of Hampton; three sons, Michael W. Berry of Whitewater, Wis., Thomas E. Berry of Hampton and Patrick J. Berry of Kirkland, Wash.; one sister, Helen Kelsh of Mason City; a brother, Paul R. Berry of Winona, Minn.; and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

** Irene Margaret Trytten

LAKE MILLS — Irene Margaret Trytten, 75, of 808 W. Main St., died Friday (Sept. 11, 1998) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at her church, Salem Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Roger Dykstra and the Rev. Sara Akre officiating. Interment will be in Salem Memorial Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, and will continue one prior to services at the church.

Memorials may be given to the Irene Margaret Trytten Memorial.

Irene Margaret Trenhaile was born Dec. 20, 1922, in Bloomfield, Neb., the daughter of William and Wilhelmina (Eck) Trenhaile.

Following baptism and confirmation in the Protestant faith, Irene moved with her family to Northwood in 1938, and graduated from Northwood High School.

Following graduation from Hamilton Business College, Irene worked for the Chicago Northwestern Railroad in Mason City. She was married to Orville H. Trytten in 1944 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Following six years of farming in the Thompson and Grafton areas, they opened the Golden Star Roller Rink, which moved seasonally to various towns in northern Iowa.

In 1962, Irene started work in Lake Mills at Deluxe. Irene worked in the factory and later in the computer center at Deluxe. Deluxe later became Fleetguard and Irene retired in 1990. As a child Irene enjoyed playing with her brothers as they rode horses amongst the Indians on the prairie. Later in life, her hobbies were sewing, solving logic puzzles and travel. Her greatest treasures were her family, husband Orville, children and grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband, Orville Trytten of Lake Mills; five children, Viola Simmons of Lake Mills, Dean Trytten and his wife, Beverly, of Taylors, S.C., Twyla and her husband, Alain Pederson of Lake Mills, Karen and her husband, Mike Leidal, of Austin, Minn., and Pamela McPherson of Boulder City, Nev.; two brothers, Clark Trenhaile and his wife, Helen, of Northwood, and Earl Trenhaile and his wife, Judy, of Manly; 10 grandchildren, Chad and Nicholas Simmons, Dana Trytten, Dana Benson and Denise Benson and her fiance, Scott Petersen, Misty and Tara Leidal, David and April Meineke and Alex McPherson; and one great-grandchild, Brandon Simmons.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Wilhelmina Trenhaile; a brother, Dale Trenhaile; and a grandchild, Jason Leidal.

** Donald Keith Pearce

RICEVILLE — Donald Keith Pearce, 66, died Wednesday (Sept. 9, 1998) at Lac Des Mille Lacs, Ontario, Canada.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Congregational United Church of Christ with the Rev. Thomas Mowbray officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery with military honors.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Lindstrom Funeral Home.

Donald Keith Pearce was born Aug. 2, 1932, at Fayette.

Survivors include his wife, Judy, of Riceville; two sons, Jeff of Leander, Texas, and Joel of Riceville; one daughter, Joni Swartz of Johnston; his mother, Doris Pearce of Scottsdale, Ariz.; four stepsons, Bob Klobassa of Elma, Dave Klobassa of Nashua, Charlie Klobassa of Shell Rock and Mike Klobassa of Elma; one stepdaughter, Kay Reicher of Alta Vista; 19 grandchildren and stepgrandchildren; one brother, Richard Pearce of Grinnell; and one sister, Diane Fischer of Deerwood, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his father.

** Alice Limberg

TITONKA — Alice Limberg, 90, died Sunday (Sept. 13, 1998) at the Titonka Care Center.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home.

** Alfred C. Meyer

WAVERLY — Alfred C. Meyer, 90, of 415 Second St. S.W., died Sunday morning (Sept. 13, 1998) at the Shell Rock Health Care Center of natural causes.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church with the Rev. Kathy Hesterberg officiating. Burial will be in Harlington Cemetery.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, where the family will greet friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Friends may also call for an hour before services at the church on Wednesday.

Memorials may be directed to the Meyer family and a memorial fund will be established at a later time.

Alfred was born on Dec. 9, 1907, in rural Waverly, the son of Fred and Mary (Oltrogge) Meyer. He was baptized on Jan. 5, 1908, and confirmed on March 20, 1921, both at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Waverly. He attended country school and following his schooling, helped on the Meyer family farm east of Waverly. On March 29, 1938, he was united in marriage to Margaret Arlene Buhrow at St. Paul's Lutheran Church. The couple made their home on the Meyer farm, where he farmed for 23 years. In 1961, the couple moved into Waverly, and Alfred began working for the Waverly-Shell Rock School System until he retired. Following his retirement, Alfred enjoyed woodworking and going fishing.

Alfred was a lifetime member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church where he served on the church council. He also served on the Washington Creamery Board, Washington #7 School Board, and was a member of the Bremer County Farm Bureau.

Survivors include his wife, Arlene Meyer of Waverly; two daughters and their husbands, Donna and Harlan Bremer of Osage, and Ruth and Larry Miller of Allison; two sons and their wives, Jim and Judy Meyer of Waverly, and Robert and Kathy Meyer of Clarksville; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Louise Liebau and her husband, Bill, of Waverly, and Luella Boevers of Waverly; two brothers and their wives, Willard and Winnie Meyer of San Diego, Calif., and Harley and Dorothy Meyer of Waverly; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, a sister-in-law, a brother-in-law, one nephew, and one niece.

** Woodrow Pettit

LONE ROCK — Woodrow "Puggy" Pettit, 86, died Saturday (Sept. 12, 1998) at home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. at the United Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Richard Miller officiating. Burial will be in the Fenton Township Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, Bancroft, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday.

Woodrow "Puggy" Pettit was born Nov. 30, 1912, at Lone Rock.

Survivors include four sons, James of Lone Rock, Argile of Palmer, Alaska, Bernard of Avondale, Ariz., and Richard of Lone Rock; two daughters, Gail Person of Lone Rock, and Peggy Preston of Fenton; nine grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and one sister, Marjori Earing of Shell Beach, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, a grandson, three brothers, and two sisters.

** Walter H. Moeller

KANAWHA — Walter H. Moeller, 88, died Saturday (Sept. 12, 1998) in Kanawha.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Kanawha Lutheran Church with the Rev. Keith Sievers officiating. Burial will be in the Amsterdam Cemetery with military graveside services under the direction of the Kanawha American Legion.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Ewing-Dugger Funeral Chapel, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday.

Walter H. Moeller was born Dec. 19, 1909, in Eicholz, Germany.

Survivors include one daughter, Nancy Moeller of Kanawha; one son, Walter Lee Moeller of Simi Valley, Calif.; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, a daughter in infancy, two brothers, and one sister.

CHARLES CITY — Margaret Bolton, 81, died Friday (Sept. 11, 1998) at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hauser Funeral Home with the Rev. Dennis D. Niezwaag of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, officiating. Burial will be at a later date in the Sunset Cemetery, Minneapolis, Minn.

There will be no visitation.

Margaret Mary Waters Bolton was born June 13, 1917, near Alta Vista.

Survivors include two sisters, Neoma Thompson and Lorrayne Johnson, both of Charles City.

** Gertrude Pals

BELMOND — Gertrude Pals, 88, died Monday (Sept. 14, 1998) at the St. Francis Regional Medical Center, Shakopee, Minn.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at United Methodist Church, Belmond, with the Rev. Celestyne DeVance officiating. Interment will be in the Belmond Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Tenold Funeral Home, Belmond, and will continue one hour prior to service time at the church Wednesday.

Gertrude (Gealow) Pals was born on Sept. 1. 1910, in Wright County, the daughter of Charles and Mary (Tiedeman) Gealow.

On Feb. 11, 1931, she was married to William Pals. Together they farmed in Hancock County for over 50 years. The couple had one son, Larry, and one daughter, Marilyn.

Gertrude and William moved to Belmond on Oct. 15, l981. Gertrude was a member of the United Methodist Church in Belmond, the Belmond Senior Citizens Club, and the Over 60 Club.

She is survived by her son, Larry Pals and his wife, Barbara, Shakopee, Minn.; her daughter, Marilyn Chandler and Ray Horstman, Forest Lake, Minn.; four grandchildren, Brian Pals and his wife, Jan, Shakopee, Minn., Mike Pals and his wife, Patty, Brooklyn Park, Minn., Cindy Pals and Mike Kutscher, Savage, Minn., and Ten Chandler, Bayport, Minn.; and nine great-grandchildren, Steven Pals, Kelly Pals, Amanda Pals, Courtney Skomars, Cody Chandler, Nicole Pals, Andrew Pals, Ryan Kutscher, and Jamie Kutscher.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, William; three brothers; eight sisters; and a granddaughter, Karen Pals.

Milly was born Feb. 29, 1916, at St. Joseph, Iowa.

She is survived by a son, Kenneth Frideres, of Eden Prairie, Minn.; a daughter, LaDonna McCleish, Brighton, Colo.; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Alvin Erpelding, of Mesa, Ariz. And Clarence Erpelding, of Colorado Springs, Colo; and a sister, Adeline Wagner, of Algona.

Milly was preceded in death by her parents and an infant brother.

** Thelma Velora Navratil

PLYMOUTH — Thelma Velora Navratil, 90, died Sunday (Sept. 13, 1998) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Old Stone United Methodist Church, Rock Falls, with the Rev. Richard Pippert and the Rev. Deborah Stowers officiating. Burial will be in the Bohemian Cemetery, Plymouth.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 East Spring St., Manly, and one hour prior to service time on Wednesday at the church.

Thelma Velora Navratil was born on Dec. 5, 1907, in Redding, the daughter of John Ralph and Mary Ellen (Crouch) Main. She received her education in the Redding School system, graduating from Redding High School in 1926.

She was united in marriage to Quentin Abarr on June 26, 1926. After their marriage, they moved from southern Iowa to northern Iowa where her husband taught school.

She was united in marriage to Arnold Navratil on Feb. 5, 1944, in Albert Lea, Minn. He preceded her in death on Jan. 24, 1975. In 1949 they began farming and continued to for several years until her husband’s death. She then moved to Plymouth.

She was also a waitress and cook at Mary’s Restaurant in Manly and a cook at the Northwood Country Club. She enjoyed gardening, playing cards, ceramics, flowers, reading, sewing, and traveling.

She was a member of the Old Stone United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women’s Club in Rock Falls, Plymouth Senior Citizens, and various card clubs during her life.

Left to cherish her memory are five children, Dorthy Nelson and her husband, Bob, of Kensett, Joyce Abarr, of Grinnell, David C. Abarr and his wife, Billee, of Grinnell, Lannie Navratil and his fiance, Kelley Hagger, of Cadott, Wis., and Dr. Michael Navratil and his wife, Linda, of Stanly, Wis.; 19 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.

Besides her husband Arnold Navratil, she was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and four sisters.

** Joseph Edward Berry

HAMPTON — Joseph Edward Berry, 84, died Friday (Sept. 11, 1998) at Franklin General Hospital, Hampton, of natural causes.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Hampton, with the Rev. Gerald Condon officiating. Burial will take place in Hampton Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home, Hampton; the scriptural wake service will begin at 7 p.m.

Joseph was born June 12, 1914, in Mason City, the son of William A. Berry and Anna Mae Coyle. He attended Holy Family Catholic School, Mason City; one year at St. Thomas College in St. Paul, Minn.; one year at Mason City Junior College and also attended Mason City Business College.

During World War II he served in the U.S. Army from 1943-1946.

He married Mildred Van Every on June 12, 1941, in Bluffton, Iowa. He worked as a livestock buyer for Armour Co. for 43 years.

He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Hampton, the Knights of Columbus, VFW, and the American Legion.

Joseph is survived by his wife, Mildred Berry, Hampton; three sons, Michael Wm. Berry, Whitewater, Wis., Thomas E. Berry, Hampton, and Patrick J. Berry, Kirkland, Wash.; one sister, Helen Kelsh, Mason City; one brother, Paul R. Berry, Winona, Minn.; and seven grandchildren, Jenifer Lunzer, Superior, Neb., Steven Berry, Ankey, Michael Berry, Milwaukee, Sean Berry, Whitewater, Wis., and Katherine Berry, Anthony Berry, and Laura Berry, all of Kirkland, Wash.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

** Earl F. Leeper Sr.

MCALLEN, Texas — Earl F. Leeper Sr., 86, formerly of Plymouth, died Monday (Sept. 7, 1998) after a long illness in McAllen, Texas.

Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11, at Roselawn Cemetery in McAllen. Funeral arrangements were completed by the Wilson, Virgel, Mortuaries, Mission, Texas.

Earl was born April 11, 1912, in Bloomington, Ill., the son of James and Carrie (Johnson) Leeper.

Earl farmed and worked at Decker’s Packing plant until his health forced him to retire. He had been a resident of McAllen, Texas, for 25 years.

He is survived by two daughters, Betty Suchy and her husband, Allen, Osage and Beverly Florence, Lake Mills; one son, Earl Leeper Jr., Plymouth; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and one sister in infancy.

** Alice MacCorkindale Street

MENOMONEE FALLS, Wis. — Alice MacCorkindale Street, 78, of Menomonee Falls, Wis., died Wednesday (Sept. 9, 1998) at Menomonee Falls Health Care Center.

A memorial service was held at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 14, 1998 at the health care center.

Alice Street was born Jan. 19, 1920, at Swaledale, Iowa.

She is survived by one son, Gerald Lucas and his wife, Linda; and one grandson, Donald, of Menomonee Falls, Wis.; a sister, Elizabeth Hansen, of Mason City, and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Jean Miller, of San Francisco.
