Alma Mary Retterath was born Nov. 30, 1914, in St. Ansgar to George and Theresa Firsching, she was one of nine children. She attended the Stacyville Catholic school until eighth grade.
On Dec. 30, 1939, she was united in marriage to Bernard "Barney" Retterath in Cicero, Ill. To this union six sons were born.

One of Alma's greatest accomplishments was when she earned her high school G.E.D. at the age of 63.
Alma's family came first and foremost in her life. She loved to spend time with her sons, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Perhaps some of her most cherished times were spent fishing, going for airplane rides, traveling, and cooking with her family.
Alma also enjoyed playing any and all card games with her friends, reading, bowling and watching soap operas and game shows on TV.
She was a member of Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville and was a former member of numerous circles.

After his military service he returned to the family farm in Miller. In 1949, at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Alvin was introduced to the girl who would later become his bride. He was united in marriage to Betty Mensch on Oct. 14, 1950, at her home in Mason City, and to this union four daughters were born. The couple made their home at the Halverson family farm at Miller until moving to rural Mason City, where Alvin farmed and milked dairy cattle until 1971. He later worked for Winnebago Industries until his retirement in 1986.
Alvin and Betty enjoyed getting together with friends, but the biggest joy of his life was time spent with family. He especially looked forward to yearly gatherings of his Osnes cousins. He was an avid Minnesota Twins and Vikings fan, he also enjoyed a good game of poker with his buddies. Alvin's favorite foods were Birdsall's hot fudge sundaes and anything else chocolate.
Alvin took great pleasure in his grandchildren, who have special memories of Grandpa playing outside with them, sledding and playing ball, and setting up the Hot Wheels car set on the living room floor.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife Elizabeth "Betty" Halverson of Mason City; three daughters, Sara (Robin) Bohl of Mason City, Jane (David) Fedeler of Manly and Becky (Pat) Hentges of Mankato, Minn.; seven grandchildren, Kerry Bohl and her fiance, Jake Stricker, of Tampa, Fla., Amanda (Tim) Arthur of Sumner, Robert Fedeler of Manly, Ashley Johnson of Mankato, Minn., Michael Bohl and his fiancee, Ashley Virgin, of Mason City, Alex Johnson of Mankato, Minn., and Cody Fedeler of Manly; great-grandchildren, Chase and Jonathan Redfern and Grace Elizabeth Arthur of Sumner, as well as other extended family members and friends.

Spiegel, Robert H.

Robert H. Spiegel, 87, passed away May 18, 2009, at his home in Fernandina Beach, Fla. Born in Odebolt, he was the only child of Harvey and Ada Harter Spiegel.
Bob loved his family, his work as a newspaperman, and his alma mater, Drake University. He graduated from Drake in 1943, with a B.A. degree in political science.
He then served in the Army during World War II in decoding, achieving the rank of first lieutenant.
He met his future wife, Dorothy Kerr, in Washington, D.C., during the war. She was a WAVE in the Navy and the daughter of Bob's Japanese teacher.
After discharge from the service, he began work as a reporter for the Des Moines Tribune, with a special emphasis on education and labor. In the mid-1950s, he wrote a series of stories on segregated housing, which he felt was the most important writing of his career. He received the Sidney Hillman Foundation award in 1956 for that work.
In 1961, he became editor of the Mason City Globe-Gazette. In 1974, he and Dorothy moved to Madison, Wis., where he became editor of the Wisconsin State Journal. While there, he worked with leaders from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the community to attract biotechnology firms to Madison and played an integral role in the birth of University Research Park.
Highlights of his career include two days of interviews with President Harry Truman to discuss his life and career, being summoned to meet Jimmy Hoffa and two bodyguards in a hotel room to defend articles critical of Hoffa, and having ongoing interviews with U.S. Sen. Mike Mansfield while he was majority leader of the Senate.
He and Dorothy retired to Hilton Head Island, S.C., in 1986. After Dorothy's death in 1989, he moved to Amelia Island, Fla., where he did freelance writing, including stories about the military bases of the Southeast United States for the Chicago Tribune.
He had a lifelong commitment to Drake University, where he was student body president in 1943 and a member of the basketball team. He was elected to the Phi Beta Kappa Society after his junior year.
In 1968, he was among the initial recipients of the Double D award, given to former Drake letter winners who have excelled in their chosen endeavor after leaving the university. He served on the Board of Trustees in 1978. Bob received the Alumni Loyalty Award in 1993. The School of Journalism presented him with the Alumni Achievement Award in 2000.
He was a charter and lifetime member of the Billie and Robert D. Ray Lifelong Learning Society, a group affiliated with Drake University that exemplifies an important aspect of Bob's life. He was the historian for the Drake Relays, writing 50th, 75th and 100th year histories, completing the last shortly before his death.
Bob was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Fernandina Beach, Fla. He was a former member of the Mason City Lions Club and the Madison Rotary International Club.
