 David Christian Marley

NEW HAVEN - David Christian Marley, 74, of New Haven, died suddenly on Monday, July 4, 2011, at his home.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 9, at St. Peter's Catholic Church in New Haven with the Rev. Ray E. Atwood officiating. Burial will be at St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery in New Haven.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Friday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage with a rosary at 5:30 p.m. There will also be visitation one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.

David Christian Marley was born on Oct. 9, 1936, in Riceville, Iowa. He was the sixth child of Frank and Anna (Fox) Marley. Dave received his education at St. Mary's Academy in New Haven, graduating in 1955.

After graduation, he worked several jobs in the New Haven area and was a part-time farmer. He also served for six years in the U.S. Army Reserve.

Dave married Joan May on Sept. 14, 1963, in Austin, Minn. They resided on the Marley family farm. Dave farmed and worked for Oliver (which later became White Farm Equipment) for almost 30 years.

Dave and Joan had six children (Jim, Sara, Joe, Jerry, John and Jay) and one special daughter (Deb). While his children were in school, he could often be found sitting in the bleachers of the Riceville gym, in the stands at the football field or in a lawn chair at the baseball and softball diamonds watching the many sporting events his children participated in. Dave was very proud of his children's sporting accomplishments, and he was also proud of the fact that all of his children had college degrees.

After retiring from White Farm, Dave worked at several part-time jobs in the area, but his favorite pastime was his lawn and garden. His children often joked that he grew enough food in his garden to feed the whole county.

In 2000, Dave lost his wife, Joan, to cancer. Dave's winter hobby of attending polka dances and playing cards kept him busy and helped him pass the time. He attended many area dances and could often be found rattling the bones. It was at a polka dance that he was blessed to find another love. Dave married Jan Kruegel on April 24, 2003. They enjoyed their time together on the farm taking care of their animals, listening to polka music, playing cards and checkers, and watching many sporting events.

Dave was a lifetime member of St. Peter's Catholic Church in New Haven.

Francis E. Rozen
U.S. Army WWII

MASON CITY - Francis E. Rozen, 94, of 4 Asbury Court, died Tuesday, July 5, 2011, surrounded by his loving family.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 8, at the Adas Israel Synagogue, 620 N. Adams Ave., Mason City. Officiating will be Michael P. Libbie.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Thursday at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., Mason City. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery with full military rites by the Mason City Memorial Association.

Francis was born on May 29, 1917, in Emmetsburg, Iowa, to Sam and Elizabeth (Miller) Rozen and was the oldest of six children. He graduated from Holy Family High School and the University of Iowa with a BA in Business.

Francis served his country as part of the 831st Quartermaster Gas Supply Company in the U.S. Army in WWII. He entered into service on Aug. 17, 1942, at Camp Dodge Iowa.

It was in a movie theater sharing candy during the service where Francis met his future bride, Anna Denaburg, who served her country as a WAC. They were married April 28, 1944, at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas. They were separated when she was assigned to New Guinea and Australia and he was assigned in Europe. Two years later they were reunited. Francis separated from service March 26, 1946, at Ft. Geo. G. Meade, Md.

Francis made sure it was always known that the finest years of his life were the 52 that he'd shared with our Aunt Anne.

Francis returned after his military service to be the Manager of the Parts Department for the family owned S&R Chevrolet until his retirement. He continued to manage with his brother the farms their father originated until his death.

He was a member of Adas-Israel Synagogue and a former member of the American Legion. An avid Twins fan and a fine centerfielder in his younger days, he seldom spoke of the game he was able to play with the pros. A fine walk, card game, piece of music, glass of wine or moment shared with family warmed his heart.

Francis is survived by his brother, Harry (Marie) Rozen, of Clear Lake; nieces, Mary Duff, Barb O'Brien, René Rozen, Connie Carlberg, Elizabeth (Betsy) Michaels, Margaret Rozen Klein, Debbie Garner, Mary Epsteen and Carol Paulson; nephews, Michael, Tim, Pat and Jim Rozen; and many great nieces and nephews.

Francis was preceded in death by his wife, Anna; parents, Sam and Elizabeth; sister, Jane Ann Duff; brothers, Lloyd, Keith and Pat; nieces, Diana Lomas and Sharon Massey; and nephews, Sam and John.

Francis will be remembered as a man whose thoughts were always of others; he was quick to inquire about your life as he was sharp to remember its tiny details. So earnest, and unspeakably kind, sharing in his life was sharing a piece of his heart. A conversation with Francis left you in admiration of his wisdom, in adoration of his humor.

We love you, and we'll miss you terribly.

Paul Erick West

WHITEFISH BAY, Wis. - Paul Erick West, 51, of Whitefish Bay, Wis., peacefully bridged the loving arms of his family at home to the open arms of Jesus.

A brain tumor claimed his life, but Paul never allowed it to conquer his subtle sense of humor, his unconditional love for family and friends or his quiet and persistent devotion to caring for his wife, Jennifer, and three sons, Erick, Colin and Parker. He handled his disease as he handled his life - with grace, dignity and more concern for others than himself.

Paul was born to George and Norma West and grew up in Mason City, Iowa, where from an early age, he showed an uncanny ability to make and retain deep and lasting friendships. He remained in close contact with several high school buddies throughout his life and to the end of his days continued to receive shipments of his favorite treat, paximadia, from the mother of a friend.

Paul graduated from St. Olaf College in 1982 with a degree in economics and an eclectic collection of friends and misdemeanors. He began work on an MBA at St. Thomas University in St. Paul, Minn. and couch-surfed between the homes of various friends and his brother before landing at a house on Portland Avenue with a group of friends. During this period he played on a softball team with his brother, created time with his father, who had been diagnosed with ALS, and became the proud owner of the Wild, Wild, Webs, a rotisserie baseball team.

He met his future wife, Jennifer, at the wedding of a cousin. They were engaged after three months and married on Aug. 31, 1986. Jennifer dated him because of his wickedly subtle sense of humor; she married him because of his compassionate and unwavering care for his father during his illness. He loved her in spite of the constant projects and causes she roped him into. Paul was a quietly affectionate, devoted husband who truly put the superlative in the term "best friend;" his commitment to his vows and his marriage were a manifestation of his deep and abiding love.

Paul was also a wonderful, giving father to his three sons. He provided the gentlest of nurturing, and always found a creative way to solve problems and lighten moods. He was closely bonded to his boys and did not spare himself in the development of their character. He built a pirate ship and various other structures in the back yard each Halloween to support their charitable "Haunted Backyard" efforts, and spent many days at Kohler-Andrae Park, hiking, camping and sitting around a fire. His sons did not share his love of televised sports, much to his chagrin, but they and other children benefited from Paul's years of coaching their baseball teams. As a father, he instructed his sons in handy household repairs and yardwork; he also modeled decency, patience, honor and faith.

Music was always an important part of Paul's life, as were his friends. He was a dedicated employee of Blue Cross & Blue Shield for 20 years. He was an active member of Fox Point Lutheran Church and grateful to serve with Interfaith.

Paul's favorite places and activities included Camp Aquila; Clear Lake; sailing, golfing, baseball and fishing; St. Olaf, especially Christmas choir concerts; Milwaukee County Zoo; the Kentucky Derby and horse racing; Lake Vermilion, Minn.; Ireland/Wales/Scotland; Kohler-Andrae Park; Galveston, Texas; Disney World; coaching baseball; the Haunted Backyard; WFBHS orchestra concerts and swim meets; gardening with his wife; Irish Fest; Two Harbors, Minn.; Fox Point Lutheran Church; and anything his kids did.

Paul is survived by his wife, Jennifer, and his three sons, Erick, Colin and Parker. Other family includes his mother, Norma West Heiny (Jim) of Mason City; brother George (Anne) of Minneapolis, Minn.; sisters Martha Krone (Phil) of Sioux City and Elizabeth Tusler of Irmo, S.C.; their families; aunt and uncle Ray and Wilma Western and cousins; cousin Gordon Campbell; and loving relatives by marriage. He was preceded in death by his father, George H. West Jr.

Paul's kind and gentle spirit lives in the hearts of those who loved him and shared his life. The family asks that you send favorite memories of Paul to rememberpaul@ASAP.net.

Visitation was held Thursday, July 7, from 4-7 p.m. at Feerick Funeral Home. Services were Friday, July 8 at 1 p.m., Fox Point Lutheran Church, 7510 N. Santa Monica Blvd., with visitation at noon. In lieu of flowers, memorials are appreciated for Fox Point Lutheran Church.

The family would like to thank Drs. Anderson, Krouwer, Kurpad, Malkin, Mueller, and Schulz; Renae; and Wheaton Franciscan Hospice for the care and support they provided Paul.
