** Jason Dean Krones

AUSTIN, Minn. — Jason Dean Krones, 17, of Austin, Minn., son of Larry and Karen (Tucker) Krones, died Tuesday (Feb. 3, 1998) at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today at St. Edwards Catholic Church with the Rev.Virgil Duellman, Rev. Paul E, Nelson and Rev. Don Zenk officiating. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Visitation was held Thursday evening at Mayer Funeral Home.

Jason Dean Krones was born Dec. 31, 1980, in Osage. He was a junior at Pacelli High School and a member of St. Edwards Church. Jason had a deep appreciation for music and enjoyed playing guitar. Research and philosophy of history, archeology, and religious development were some of his interests. Exploring these interests truly developed his unique individual spirit.

Survivors include his parents, Larry and Karen Krones, of Austin; paternal grandparents, Dean and Florence Krones of Osage; maternal grandparents, Tommy and Lois Tucker of Tucson, Ariz.; aunts and uncles, Linda and Frank Ruiz of Phoenix, Ariz., Ginny Tucker of Anchorage, Alaska, Kathy and Kirk Mason of San Antonio, Texas, Janice and Mark Alterman of Tucson, Jim and Karen Tucker of Tucson, Lori Mark of Osage, Lennis and Betty Krones of Mason City, and John Mark of Osage; and several cousins and many friends.

** Alvin George Kroneman

ST. ANSGAR — Alvin George, Kroneman, 87, of St. Ansgar, passed away Wednesday (Feb. 4, 1998) at the St. Ansgar Good Samaritan Center.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at St. John's Lutheran Church, Rock Township, Mitchell County, with the Rev. Rose Marie Lewis officiating. Burial will be in the St. Ansgar Cemetery.

Visitation will be after noon today, before the service at the church. Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Alvin George Kroneman was born in Rock Township, Mitchell County, on Oct. 24,1910, to Carl Kroneman and Mary Emma (Neumann) Kroneman. He was one of nine children.

He lived his entire life in Mitchell County and farming was his passion and livelihood. He was married to Pauline Edith Thompson on April 14, 1940, at St. John's Lutheran Church, and began leading the life which they both loved of farming, tending cattle and carrying on the Kroneman tradition of hard work an enjoying every minute. Watching Alvin run from one project on the farm to another was a common site. They farmed in Rock Township for almost 40 years. The love of farming and hard work was passed on to their only son, Allan Dean Kroneman. Attending State Fair and showing cattle was a highlight. Alvin and Pauline enjoyed ballroom dancing at the Terp to the Lawrence Welk Band. Alvin served as member of the Fair Board for Mitchell County and a 4-H leader for many years.

Upon retirement in 1976 they moved to St. Ansgar. Alvin continued to work hard, spending much time with Allan and Joann in southern Iowa farming, still running from one project to another. In his time off and later years he took pride in his friendship at the Co-op in St. Ansgar and riding the country roads with friends, which was a joyful pass time.

Alvin is survived by one son, Allan, and his wife, Joann (Baker) and one granddaughter Jennie Jo Kroneman, of rural Clear Lake; four brothers, Lloyd and Wilma Kroneman of Grafton, George and Twila Kroneman of Osage, Ruben and Betty Kroneman of St. Ansgar, Glen and Delores Kroneman of Carpenter; two sisters, Myrtle Miller of St. Ansgar, and Clara and Justin Ones of Osage; and 32 nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife on Dec. 16, 1997, they were married for 57 years; and two sisters, Laura Wilde and Grace Tabbert.

** Phyllis E. Bombella

MASON CITY -- Phyllis E. Bombella, 87, of 320 S. York Ave., Mason City, died Wednesday (Feb. 4,1998) at North Iowa Mercy Health center East.

A funeral Mass will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S.E., with the Rev. Carl A. Ries officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E.

Phyllis E. Bombella was born Jan. 26, 1911, in Conby, Minn., the daughter of William and Rosella (Carrothers) Badker. She married John Bombella in December 1947 in Chicago.

Phyllis grew up in Mason City and attended Mason City schools. She worked at Mason City Tent and Awning for many years, and then worked at Como Photos until her marriage.

She enjoyed fishing, readings gardening and dancing. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Survivors include one son John Bombella of Evansdale; two daughters, Sharon Rubio and her husband, Joe, and Linda Bombella, all of Mason City; one grandson, Matt Bombella of Evansdale; one sister, Calla Cahill of Mason City; one brother, Merle Badker and his wife, Helen, of Vesper, Wis.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death her parents; her husband; three sisters, Lola Lunde, Marie Stille, and Bernice Hyde; and two brothers, Roy and Kenneth Badker.

** Milfred `Bud' Clausen

DUBUQUE—Milfred "Bud" CIausen, 69, of 2161 Sunnyslope Drive, Dubuque, died Wednesday (Feb. 4, 1998) at Mercy Health Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Church, with burial at Dubuque Memorial Gardens with military honors accorded by Dubuque Post #6, American Legion.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Behr's Funeral Home, where there will be a parish wake service at 4:30 p.m.

A Milfred `Bud' Clausen Memorial Fund has been established.

Milfred `Bud" Clausen was born April 12, 1928, in Mason City, the son of John Bertram and Eva Mane (Overtruf) Clausen.

Bud served with the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict in the Philippines and Korea. He married Joan Marie Swift on Aug. 4, 1973, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Bud was formerly employed with Northwestern Portland Cement Company in Mason City for 20 years. After moving to Dubuque in 1968, he was employed at John Deere Dubuque Works for 24 years, until his retirement in 1992.

Bud was a member of Sacred Heart Perish, the VFW, the Life and Breath Support Group, the Mended Hearts Club, and the John Deere Retirees Club. He was a former member of UAW Local 94.

Bud really loved to drive and to travel anywhere. In his earlier years he enjoyed fishing. Bud was a loving husband and father who loved to be with his family and grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife Joan M. Clausen; five daughters Patricia (Ed) Byers, Marie C. (Randy Shireman) Clausen, Jane M. (Joseph) Small, Patty A. (Terry Bertmann) Morrison, and Linda M. (Ross) Vanderbilt, all of Dubuque; one son, T.C. Clausen of Dubuque; 20 grandchildren seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Esther L. (Eugene Wheeler of Mason City, and Mrs. Charles (Ruth B.) Eppens of Mason City.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Charles, Ronald "Don", Kenneth and Clarence Clausen.

** Forrest L. Hansen

CLEAR LAKE—Forrest Hansen, 84, of Clear Lake, died Thursday (Feb. 5, 1998) at the Oakwood Care Center.

Memonal services are tentatively planned for 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St.

** Vera Jurrens

CHARLES ClTY—Vera Jurrens, 97, of Charles City, died Thursday (Feb. 5, 1998) at the Riverside Chautauqua Guest Home.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Hauser Funeral Home with the Rev. A. C. Wegner Jr. of Faith Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.

Friends may call one hour prior to services at the funeral home on Monday.

Vera Emma Schwartz Jurrens was born Dec. 25, 1900, in Charles City.

Survivors include one daughter, Mary Marth, of Charles City; a sister, Emma Boerschel of Modesto, Calif.; six grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death her parents, husband, twin sons a brother and a great-grandson.

** Opal Waltman

BURT—Opal Waltman, 93 of Burt, died Thursday (Feb. 5 1998) at the home of her nephew.

Funeral services will be held are 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Roland Emmon officiating. Burial will be in the Burt Township Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, Bancroft, and will continue. one hour prior to services at the church on Monday.

Opal Waltman was born July 10, 1904, in rural Burt.

Survivors include one nephew, Dr. Warren Waltman of Britt; and one niece, Lennice Brenner of Mapleton.

She was preceded in death by; her parents, three brothers and one sister.

** Kenneth R. Ritter

CHARLES CITY—Kenneth R. Ritter, 70, of Charles City, died Wednesday (Feb. 4,1998) at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Reid's Funeral Chapel, Marble Rock with the Rev. Darwin Miller Temple Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in the Westside Cemetery, Marble Rock

Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral chapel, and will continue from 11 a.m. to service time at the chapel.

Kenneth R. Ritter was born Oct. 15,1927, in Marble Rock.

Survivors include two daughters, Bonnie Ritter of Charles City, and Debbie Bentine of Orchard; three sons, Robert Ritter of Charles City, Michael Ritter of Rockford, and Kenneth Ritter of Osage; nine grandchildren; his mother, Ethel Ritter of Charles City; six sisters, Darlene Hadden of Castana, Arlene Schwartz of Council Bluffs, Dorothy Webb of Hamilton, Ind., Fran Bowling of North Carolina, Donna Connerley of Charles City, and Connie Glutch of Eddyville; three brothers, Ronald Ratter of Charles City, Vern Ritter of Tucson, Ariz., and Robert Ritter of Waterloo

He was preceded in death by his father and one brother.

THORNTON — Randolph "Randy" K. Bergman, 56, of 201 N. Third St., Thornton, died Thursday (Feb. 5, 1998) at the Veterans Hospital, Des Moines.

** C.L. 'Bud' Schultz

ST. ANSGAR — C.L. "Bud" Schultz, 81, of St. Ansgar, died Friday (Feb. 6, 1998) at the Good Samaritan Center.

The body was cremated. There will be no services. Champion Funeral Home, Osage, is in charge of arrangements.

C. L. "Bud" Schultz was born Feb. 19, 1916, near Nora Springs, in Cerro Gordo County.

Survivors include a family friend, Glenice Walters and her children, Jamie and Jeffrey Walters, all of Charles City.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and four brothers.

** Dale L. Popes

CHARLES CITY — Dale L. Popes, 45, of 811 11th St., died Thursday (Feb. 5, 1998) at home.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St., with the Rev. Debra Lincoln, associate pastor of Trinity United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in the Oakwood Cemetery, Floyd.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to services on Monday at the church.

Dale Lee Popes was born Feb. 25, 1952 in Charles City.

Survivors include his mother, Colleen Scholle, of Swaledale; one sister, Inda Scholle, Rochester, Minn.; a brother, Alan Scholle, of Cedar Falls; and his father, John Popes, Tripola.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, one stepbrother, and one infant daughter.

Memorials may be given to Hospice of North Iowa, Charles City.

** Randolph 'Randy' K. Bergman

THORNTON — Randolph "Randy" K. Bergman, 56, of Thornton, died Thursday (Feb. 5, 1998) at the Veterans Hospital, Des Moines.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the First Baptist Church, 125 E. State St., Mason City, with the Rev. Ronald Stein, officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, with military honors by the Clear Lake V.F.W.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, and one hour prior to services on Monday at the church.

The family suggests memorials to the Randy K. Bergman Memorial Fund.

Randy was born Dec. 23, 1941, in Britt.

Survivors include his two children, Jeremiah Bergman and Kelli Bergman, both of Clear Lake; his father, Bennie Bergman, Des Moines; four brothers and sisters, Billy Bergman, Clear Lake, Betty Rutan, Clear Lake, Arnold Bergman, Des Moines, and Virginia Parker, Des Moines.

He was preceded in death by his mother, and one sister.

** Ila Mae Krull

THOMPSON — Ila Mae Krull, 79, of Thompson, died Thursday (Feb. 5, 1998) at the Titonka Care Center, Titonka.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church, Thompson, with the Rev. Wendy Trone officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Thompson.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Winter Funeral Home, 245 N. Harrison St., Thompson, and one hour prior to services on Monday at the church.

Ila Mae Krull was born Jan. 25, 1919, at Lakota.

Survivors include her husband, Edward "Dutch" Krull, of Thompson; one daughter, Mary Green, of Thompson; two sons, Gary Krull, of Thompson and Allen Krull, of Parkers Prairie, Minn.; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Elsie Wilson, of Hayfield, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, three brothers, and one great-grandson.

NORTHWOOD — C. Amanda Varland, 93, of the Northwood and Lake Mills area, died Friday (Feb. 6, 1998) at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.

LATIMER — Helen L. Holze, 84, of Latimer died Friday (Feb. 6, 1998) at the Hampton Care Center, Hampton.

CLARION — Walter W. Pardun, 90, of Clarion, died Tuesday (Feb. 3, 1998) at the Community Memorial Hospital, Clarion.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the Willim Funeral Home, Clarion, with the Rev. Candace Adams, officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery, Clarion.

ST. ANSGAR — Norris M. Anderson, 75, of St. Ansgar, died Friday (Feb. 6, 1998) at home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Mona Lutheran Church, Mona, with the Rev. Russ Wangen, officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Mona.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, 207 S. School St., St. Ansgar.

Norris M. Anderson was born June 15, 1922, in Otranto Township, Mitchell County, Iowa.

Survivors include one daughter, Janet Wold, St. Ansgar; two sons, Norman Anderson, Lyle, Minn., and Kenneth Anderson, Minneapolis, Minn.; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one son, and one brother.

** James Roderick Darnell

CLEAR LAKE — James Roderick Darnell, 87, of Clear Lake, died Friday (Feb. 6, 1998) at home in Clear Lake.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Union Mound Cemetery, in Sumner, Iowa, with the Rev. Charlotte Mallott, presiding. Military honors will be conducted by Thomas E. Woods American Legion Post #223.

James Roderick Darnell was born on March 30, 1910, in Sumner, Iowa, the son of Dr. George W. and Ada Mullican Darnell. He was graduated from Ringsted High School in Ringsted, Iowa in 1928 and went on to attend Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa, where he received his Bachelor of Science Degree in 1932.

James Rockerick worked for the State of Iowa in Des Moines for several years before joining the United States Department of the Treasury, where he worked for 30 years.

During World War II he served as a technical sergeant with the 104th Reconnaisance Troop in France, Germany, Belgium, and The Netherlands. He was wounded in action in Germany and awarded the Purple Heart.

In June of 1997, he was awarded the Liberty Medal and "Diplome de Reconnaissance" from the French Government for his service in France during the Allied Invasion of Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge.

After World War II ended, he returned to Iowa where he married Doris May Lindsey, of Colorado, on Christmas Day of 1945, at the Methodist Church in Clear Lake.

James Roderick enjoyed bicycling, walking, following current events, listening to big band music, and repairing bicycles and radios.

He is survived by his wife, Doris May Lindsey Darnell, of Clear Lake; one son, Dr. George W. Darnell and his wife, Gerianne, of Council Bluffs; one daughter, Paula Darnell, of Reno, Nev.; two granddaughters, Sara Manley, and Andrea Roberts and her husband, Keith, all of Reno, Nev.; a sister, Neva Mason, of Mason City; nephews, James Earl Mason Jr., and his wife, Helen, of Mason City; and Robert Mason and his wife, Ann, of Cedar Rapids; nieces, Suellen Estey, of New York, and Gretchen Evans and her husband, Billy, of Collins. Miss.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Russell; sisters, Pauline Gross and her husband, Elton, and Mary Estey and her husband, Robert; and brother-in-law, James Earl Mason Sr.

Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, is in charge of arrangements.

** Opal Waltman

BURT — Opal Waltman, 93, of Burt, died Thursday (Feb. 5, 1998) at the home of her nephew, Dr. Warren Waltman, in Britt.

Opal Waltman was born July 10, 1904, in rural Burt, the daughter of Jesse and Jane (McCulley) Waltman.

Opal attended rural school and later worked for the Burt Telephone Company until they went to dial phones.

She enjoyed needlework and loved helping people.

Opal is survived by four nephews, Eugene and his wife, Patricia Waltman, of Corwith, Iowa, Craig and his wife, Vickie Ditsworth, of Panora Iowa, Gary Ditsworth, of Panora, Iowa, and Dr. Warren and his wife, Jan Waltman, of Britt, Iowa and by three nieces, Sharon and her husband, John Van Tuyl, of Ankeny, Iowa, Cheryl and her husband, Ron Hart, of Coon Rapids, Iowa, and Lennice and her husband, Clyde Brenner, of Mapleton, Iowa. She is also survived by 12 great-nieces and nephews; and eight great-great-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, and one sister.

** Forrest L. Hansen

CLEAR LAKE — Mr. Forrest L. Hansen, 84, of Clear Lake, died Thursday (Feb. 5, 1998) at the Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Jerry Gernander, of the Richland Lutheran Church of Thornton, officiating. Inurnment will take place at a later time in the Fairview Cemetery, Lincoln, Neb.

The family will greet friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake.

The family suggests memorials to the Forrest L. Hansen Memorial Fund.

Forrest was born June 21, 1913, the son of John and Florence (Hanson) Hansen on the family farm, rural Ventura, Iowa. He attended school in Ventura.

Forrest married Geneva Robison on June 20, 1937 in Garner, Iowa. He farmed the family farm until 1964. They moved to Lincoln, Neb. where he operated heavy equipment for Dobson Brothers Construction until his retirement. They moved to Clear Lake, Iowa, in 1992.

Forrest enjoyed fishing, hunting and especially their many trips to Minnesota to fish. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

He was a member of the Moose Lodge while living in Nebraska.

He is survived by his wife, Geneva Hansen, Clear Lake; a son, Gayland Hansen and his wife, Phyllis, of North Platte, Neb.; two daughters, Shirley Spellman and her husband, Calvin, of Phillips, Neb.; and Genelle Whitehurst and her husband, Gary, of Clear Lake; 15 grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren, six stepgreat-grandchildren; and one stepgreat-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Florence Kock; and one son, James Hansen.

CHARLES CITY — Jonce R. Heddens, 91, died Friday (Feb. 6, 1998) at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Hauser Funeral Home with the Rev. J. Larry Vallery of Trinity United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery. Military honors will be conducted at graveside by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Ethel M. Jones, a daughter of William and Ida M. (Love) Feltman, was born Nov. 7, 1925, in Charles City, Iowa.

Amanda Varland was born on Oct. 6, 1904, in Rose Grove, the daughter of Ole and Mary (Masland) Roe. She attended and received her education in the rural country schools near Rose Grove. After completing her schooling she did housekeeping for various families in the Rose Grove area.

She was united in marriage to Clarence Handeland on Sept. 8, 1926, in Williams. He preceded her in death in 1962. She was united in marriage to John Varland during June of 1964 at the Zoar Lutheran parsonage in Lake Mills. He preceded her in death in 1987.

She enjoyed quilting and flowers.

She was a member of Bethel Lutheran Brethren Church, rural Joice, and a former member of Zoar Lutheran Church and church circle in Lake Mills.

Left to cherish her memory are two daughters, Marie Peterson of Northwood and Clarice Leraaen and her husband, Myron (Mike), of Charles City; one son, Donald Handeland and his wife, Sylvia, of Viola, Ark.; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Kenneth Roe and his wife, Ann, of Ames, and Clifford Roe and his wife, Dorothy, of Albert Lea, Minn.; one sister, Ruth Jensen of Chatfield, Minn.; as well as other relatives and friends.

MASON CITY — Ruth, Mrs. Robert Starkey, 82, a resident of 1000 N. Eisenhower Ave., #106, Mason City, and a former resident of 700 Wisconsin St., Charles City, died Saturday afternoon (Feb. 7, 1998) at the Heritage Care Center.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Charles City. The Monsignor Stanley J. Hayek, pastor, will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery, Charles City.

Friends may call at Hauser Funeral Home, Charles City, from 1 to 9 p.m. Tuesday. The St. Mary Circle will meet at Hauser's at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday to recite the Rosary, and there will be a parish vigil scriptural wake service at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the Mass at the church.

Ruth Margaret Dailey Starkey was born July 25, 1915, on a farm near Orchard, the daughter of Rob and Ella Scott Dailey. She graduated from St. Mary's Parochial High School at North Washington, and on Oct. 17, 1935, she and Robert W. Starkey were married at Charles City.

She worked at Salsbury Chemicals and at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City, was a member of St. Mary's Circle, the Senior Citizens, the Senior Citizens Fun Band, and the Moose Lodge. Ruth enjoyed her grandchildren and loved having them stay with her. She was a Girl Scout leader for many years. She liked to travel and play with the Senior Citizens Fun Band. At the age of 60, Ruth learned to swim by taking lessons at the YMCA.

Living family members include four sons and their wives, Clyde and Donna Starkey, and Jerry and Joann Starkey, all of Mason City, Glen and Kathy Starkey of Mill Valley, Calif., and Richard Starkey of Brooklin Park, Minn.; two daughters and their husbands, Jon Ann and Arnold Fredricks of Mason City, and Janice and Jack Ferch of Conrad; a sister, Leone Scheelhammer of North Washington; 17 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband in 1988; four grandchildren; two sisters; and two brothers.

Michael J. Asada was born Dec. 4, 1948, in Racine, Wis., the son of Frank and Patricia (McCoy) Asada. He served in the U.S. Navy and graduated from the University of Long Beach in California. He had been a professional landscaper and was a teacher before being disabled. He had been a resident of the Good Shepherd Care Center in Mason City.

GARNER — LaVern H. Johnson, 80, died Sunday (Feb. 8, 1998) at the Concord Care Center.

LaVern Henry Johnson, the son of John C. And Altina (Sporaa) Johnson was born April 20, 1917, on a farm near Latimer. He attended country school and worked for several farmers in the area. On July 13, 1940, he was united in marriage to Betty Quandt at Bethany, Mo. They lived near Hampton, Meservey and then Ventura, where LaVern worked for various farmers. In 1951, he started working at Northern Natural Gas, where he retired after 28 years of employment. LaVern was mechanically inclined and used his talent fixing cars and machinery. He enjoyed wildlife, especially watching and feeding the birds and squirrels. He also enjoyed going on vacations to Lake Superior.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Johnson, of Garner; a sister, Jennie Long of Austin, Minn.; a brother, Dallas Johnson and his wife, Merle, of Mason City; sisters-in-law, Grace Johnson of Meservey, Leona Johnson of Latimer, Jacqueline Johnson of Hampton, and Lila Johnson of Mason City; and nieces, nephews and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Keely Johnson, John Johnson Jr., Melvin Johnson, Duaine Johnson; and one sister, Altina Schemling.

FORT PIERCE, Fla. — Connie M. Scar, 54, died Saturday (Feb. 7, 1998) at her residence in Fort Pierce, Fla.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11, 1998, at St. Anastasia Catholic Church in Fort Pierce. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Haisley-Hobbs Funeral Home Chapel, 3015 Okeechobee Road, Fort Pierce, Fla., with a vigil service to be held at 7 p.m.

** Louise M. Schultz

MASON CITY — Louise M. Schultz, 85, of Sun Prairie, Wis., died Friday (Feb. 6, 1998) in a Sun Prairie nursing home.

A spring memorial service will be held in Louise’s honor in Mason City. The cremation will be completed in Wisconsin.

The family requests that any memorials be given to the I.O.O.F. Home in Mason City, where Louise lived comfortably for several of her last years.

Louise was born Feb. 13, 1912, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Wiard J. and Adeline (Schneider) Wiltfang. The family moved to Sutherland, Iowa, in 1924. After high school, Louise attended Morningside College in Sioux City for a year.

On July 30, 1936, Louise married Philip C. Schultz in Sioux Falls, S.D.

The couple lived in Sutherland and Burbank, Calif., but soon settled in Mason City where they lived for more than 50 years.

Louise will be remembered for her sweet smile and her gentle spirit by her loving family: her husband, Philip, Sun Prairie, Wis.; daughters, Judith Dalton, San Rafael, Calif., Mary Wikoff, Boulder, Colo., and Rachel Schultz, Sun Prairie, Wis.; son, Edwin Schultz, San Diego, Calif.; one brother, Daniel Wiltfang, Iowa City, Iowa/Abaco, Bahamas; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and her friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Gertrude; and two brothers, Rudolph and William.

** Elmer Edward Johnson

MANLY — Elmer Edward Johnson, 84, of rural Manly, died Sunday (Feb. 8, 1998) at his home.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manly, with the Rev. Thomas McAndrew officiating. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Manly.

Friends may call after 5 p.m. today at the Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 E. Spring St., Manly, with a public Scripture Rosary service to be held at 7 p.m.

The family of Elmer Edward Johnson has requested that memorial contributions be made to Hospice of North Iowa in his memory.

Elmer Edward Johnson was born on Jan. 31, 1914, in Rock Falls, the son of Byron and Theresa (Hovel) Johnson. He attended and received his education in the Plymouth School System, graduating from Plymouth High School in 1932.

He was united in marriage to Lenora Wise on June 5, 1937, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Plymouth.

Elmer began farming north of Plymouth until moving to the present farm in 1940 and continued to farm until the time of his death.

Elmer and Lenora, had just celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in June 1997.

He enjoyed fishing, cribbage, cards, gardening, the great outdoors and was an all around sports enthusiast, but his great love and enjoyment was his family and grandchildren.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manly and had served on the Parish Council. He was an usher for several years at the church and was a former member of Knights of Columbus in Mason City.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Lenora Johnson, of Manly; six children, Ann Aguilera and her husband, Joseph, of New Braunfels, Texas; Robert Johnson and his wife, Marcia, of Eldridge, Iowa; Genevieve Grube and her husband, Carl, of Mason City; Leroy Johnson, of Manly; Dennis Johnson and his wife, Roberta, of Manly; and Linda Johnson, of Manly; 17 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one brother, Leo Johnson and his wife, Josephine, of Plymouth, as well as other relatives and many friends.

** Richard C. Nauman

ROCKFORD — Richard C. Nauman, 65, of 12530 Zinnia Ave., died Wednesday (Feb. 4, 1998) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Private graveside services were held at the Rock Grove Cemetery in Nora Springs, with the Rev. Kathy Graves of Muse Norris Hospice officiating.

There was no public visitation.

Sheckler Colonial Chapel, 114 N. Hawkeye, Nora Springs, is serving the family.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa in memory of Richard C. Nauman.

Richard C. Nauman was born Aug. 3, 1932, at rural Marble Rock, the son of Carl and Clara (Linderkamp) Nauman.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

On May 1, 1965, Richard married Marlene Poovey at the Oxford Methodist Church in Oxford, Kan.

Richard was a farmer of all his life.

He was an avid collector of toy tractors. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Survivors include his wife, Marlene Nauman, Rockford; two children, Marta Kramer and her husband, Richard, of Nora Springs, and Mark Nauman and his wife, Sheila, Roland; four grandchildren, Adam and Emily Kramer, and Orion and Jesse Nauman; and one sister, Gladys Nauman, of Rockford.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

OSAGE — Michael G. "Mick" Penney, 45, of #16 Triangle Court, Osage, died Saturday (Feb. 7, 1998) at Methodist Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

Michael G. Penney was born Nov. 8, 1952, in Osage, son of Vinus "Bill" and Lorraine (Hultman) Penney.

Mick grew up on a farm near Little Cedar. He graduated from Osage High School and Austin Technical School and he attended Iowa State University.

He farmed and worked at Carroll George Company in Northwood for the past nine years.

Mick enjoyed farming, was an avid trapshooter, and he attended many concerts. He acquired many friends in the area.

He was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.

Survivors include his loving companion and her family, Roberta Bryant, of Osage; one sister, a niece and nephew, and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

ALLISON — Etta M. DeBower, 88, of Allison, died Sunday (Feb. 8, 1998) at the Allison Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Sietsema Vogel Funeral Home in Allison, with the Rev. Jerry Laehn officiating. Burial will be in the Allison Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Wednesday until time of services at the funeral home.

Etta M. DeBower was born Dec. 29, 1909, in Butler County, Iowa.

She is survived by one sister, Anna Rieners, of Waterloo.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and husband.

HAMPTON — Howard Glen Wagner, 91, formerly of Thornton, died Sunday (Feb. 8, 1998) at the Heritage Care Center in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at United Methodist Church in Geneva, with the Rev. Paul Smith officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in rural Ackley.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. today at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home, 306 Central Ave E., Hampton.

Howard Glen Wagner was born Nov. 3, 1906, at Faulkner.

Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Wagner, of the Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake; his children, Shirley Munier, Des Moines; Mildred Stevenson, Spokane, Wash.; Dean Wagner, Waterloo; Merle Wagner, Latimer; Fanny Hansen, Clear Lake; and Dale Wagner, Pea Ridge, Ark.; 26 grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren; brothers, Glee Wagner, Hampton, Joe Wagner and Russell Wagner, both of Geneva.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sons, one sister and one brother.

CHARLES CITY — Karla (Mrs. Jerry) Groesbeck, 53, of 1702 Kenwood Ave., died Sunday (Feb. 8, 1998) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with Monsignor Stanley J. Hayek officiating. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery in Charles City.

Visitation will be held from noon to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St., with a 7:30 p.m. parish Vigil Scriptural Wake service. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services on Thursday at the church.

Karla Kay Carr Clark Groesbeck was born July 18, 1944, at Charles City.

Survivors include her husband, Jerry, of Charles City; one daughter, Loretta Deetz, of Charles City; three grandchildren; one stepson, Michael Groesbeck, of Des Moines; one stepdaughter, Amy Miller, of Des Moines; two stepgranddaughters; and stepfather, Douglas Wartman, of Charles City.

Mildred Gray was born Sept. 19, 1910, on the family farm in Tama County.

Maurice Frank Baker was born Feb. 25, 1914, in Britt.
