** Emmett Schinnow

NORTHWOOD — Emmet Schinnow, 82, of Northwood, died Wednesday (Oct. 28, 1998) at his home in Northwood.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, Highway 65 S., Northwood, with the Rev. David Wall officiating. Burial will be in the Sunset Rest Cemetery, Northwood.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home.

Emmett was born Dec. 28, 1915, in Mason City to Emil and Bertha (Raywinkle) Schinnow.

He operated the Coffee Cup Cafe in Mason City and the Midway Cafe in Northwood for many years.

He married Ann Kramer on Feb. 22, 1938.

He married Velma Hanson at the Little Brown Church in Nashua on Sept. 17, 1960.

A recovered alcoholic, Emmett worked for 16 years with the Fountain Lake Treatment Centers in Forest City and Albert Lea and with Alcoholics Anonymous to help others overcome their addictions.

He is survived by his wife, Velma, of Northwood; one son, Richard Schinnow, of Rock Falls; two daughters, Marilyn Dauberg and her husband, Gary, of Morgan Hill, Calif.; and Connie Deets and her husband, Horace, of Annandale, Va.; a stepdaughter, Joanne Wignes and her husband, Jim, of Rochester, Minn.; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren; one brother, Herbert Schinnow, of Charles City.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father, and a brother, Robert.

** Katherine Carmen-Aukes

BUFFALO CENTER — Katherine Carmen-Aukes, 89, died Saturday (Oct. 31, 1998) at her home in Buffalo Center.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Winter Funeral Home, Buffalo Center.

** Edward Morton Roeder

ROCKWELL — Edward Morton (Mort) Roeder, 78, formerly of Ackley, died Friday (Oct. 30, 1998) at Rockwell Nursing Home.

Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Rockwell, with the Rev. Stephen Meyer officiating.

There will be no visitation. Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, is in charge of the arrangements.

Memorials may be made to Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Rockwell.

Edward M. Roeder was born Nov. 28, 1919, in Rockwell, son of Edward "Buck" and Helen (Stevenson) Roeder. Edward attended Sacred Heart Academy, Rockwell.

He worked with his father on the family farm in Rockwell. He then moved to Ackley and worked at Ackley Pac until retiring.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

He is survived by Donald Hitzhusen and many other cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Andrew, in World War II.

** Robert Edward Casey Sr.

MASON CITY — Robert Edward Casey Sr., 80, of 415 Fifth St. S.E., died Friday (Oct. 30, 1998) at his home.

A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S.E., Mason City, with the Rev. Michael Schueller officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City, with full military honors conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. today at Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, with a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 6:30 followed by a scriptural prayer service at 7:30 p.m.

Memorials may be made to Newman Catholic Schools in memory of Robert Edward Casey Sr.

Robert Edward Casey Sr. was born June 17, 1918, in Mason City, the son of Frank and Frances (Hurley) Casey. He married Helen Jean Lattimer on Oct. 11, 1944, in Boca Raton, Fla.

Bob graduated from St. Joseph’s Catholic High School in 1935. He attended Mason City Junior College and then graduated from the University of Michigan in 1939. He served in World War II as a second lieutenant in the Army Air Corps as a radar instructor. He also served during the Korean War.

He loved spending time with his grandchildren. He enjoyed fishing and gardening and was a champion rose grower.

Bob was in the automobile business for 44 years, working for Prichard Motor Co. and Schukei Chevrolet. He was a life member of the Knights of Columbus, a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church where he was an Eucharistic Minister for the homebound and he served on the parish council. He was a charter member of the Newman Booster Club and served as president of the Newman Board of Education.

Survivors include his wife, Jean Casey, Mason City; five children, Mike Casey, Oxnard, Calif., Marc Casey and his wife, Cherie, Dyersville, Bob Casey and his wife, Cathy, Dunwoody, Ga., Jean Casey and her husband, Matt Berry, Clear Lake, and Theresa Rypel and her husband, Jeff, Greenfield, Wis.; four brothers and sisters, Marie MacPeak, Nagadoches, Texas, Jack Casey, Valpraiso, Ind., Mary Catherine Casey, Mason City, and Frances Casey, Waco, Texas; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

** A. J. Messmore

MASON CITY — A. J. Messmore, 10, of 55 Granite Court S.E., died Thursday (Oct. 29, 1998) at home.

A funeral Mass will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S.E., Mason City, with the Rev. Carl Ries and the Rev. Michael Schueller officiating. Burial will be at Elmwood St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will begin at 3:30 p.m. Monday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, with a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 6 p.m. followed by a scriptural prayer service at 7 p.m.

Memorials may be made to the A. J. Messmore Benefit Fund which will be used for various charities in his name.

Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, is in charge of arrangements.

Andrew James Messmore was born Feb. 18, 1988, in Waterloo, the son of Greg and Linda (Wittry) Messmore. A.J. was a fifth grader at Newman Catholic Middle School, Mason City.

What A.J. enjoyed most was spending time with his best friend, Nick Linahon. He was involved in Stebens Children’s Theatre, Mason City Youth Baseball, Cub Scouts, YMCA basketball programs, and was one of the bat boys for the Newman baseball team. A.J. enjoyed participating in many activities. He loved attending Iowa Hawkeye football games, playing his trumpet, watching the San Francisco 49ers, Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bulls. He loved playing basketball and baseball, snow skiing, spending time with his family and friends, and playing with his golden retriever, Molly.

A.J. enjoyed school, reading, spending time on the computer, and playing video games. He was a Mass server at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and was an avid collector of Beanie Babies. He will be remembered always for his loving and kind heart and his warm smile.

Survivors include his parents, Greg and Linda; a sister, Haley; his grandparents, Lou and Marie Wittry, Armstrong, and Floyd Messmore, Vinton; two aunts, Nancy Tjarks and her husband, Mike, Ankeny, and Karen Schumacher and her husband, Greg, Maryville, Mo.; three uncles, Mark Wittry and his wife, Jaci, Polk City, Ken Messmore and his wife, Dolores, and Steve Messmore and his wife, Sara, Mason City; seven cousins, Krista Mutch and her husband, William, Denver, Colo., Mindy and Meghann Messmore, both of Quad Cities, Marcy Kitzman and her husband, Paul, Quad Cities, Aaron and Averi Tjarks, both of Ankeny, and Christian Wittry, Polk City; and many great-aunts and great-uncles.

A.J. was preceded in death by his grandfather, Loren Messmore; his great-grandparents, Andrew and Leola Wittry, Al and Adella Stracke, James and Grace Messmore, and Clay and Eula Herring.

** Rev. Nancy Louise Vieker

GREENE — Funeral services for the Rev. Nancy Louise Vieker, 57, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Vilmar, rural Greene, with Bishop Steven L. Ullestad, the Rev. Norman Omodt, the Rev. Lance Kittleson, and the Rev. Jerry Laehn officiating. Following services her body will be cremated; committal will be held at a later date in California.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Reid’s Funeral Chapel, 519 N. First, Greene, where a scripture service will begin at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church on Monday one hour before services.

Nancy Louise Dent was born Aug. 9, 1941, the only daughter of Floyd and Louise (Lincoln) Dent in Oxnard, Calif., and died Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1998, at Covenant Medical Center, Waterloo, from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident near Oelwein.

At the age of 5 she learned to read music and at the age of 12 she was church musician, playing piano, organ and directing choirs. She received her education in the Livingston public schools, graduating in 1959.

She was united in marriage to her childhood sweetheart, Robert Vieker, on Sept. 6, 1959, at the First Methodist Church in Livingston.

Nancy attended the University of California at Davis and finished her bachelor of arts degree in 1965 at California State University at Stanislaus, with a major in English and a minor in music. At that time she completed requirements for general elementary teaching credentials. She held a learning handicapped credential, a resource specialist certificate, and a preliminary administrative credential.

She taught kindergarten, music and special education at Livingston, Atwater and Hilmar, Calif.

On Nov. 5, 1992, Nancy accepted God’s call to go into the ministry and entered the Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary in the fall of 1993. During her third year at seminary, she completed her internship at Angelica Lutheran Church in Los Angeles. She was ordained into the Holy Ministry on Oct. 11, 1997, at Berea Lutheran Church, Hilmar, Calif. She was installed as pastor at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church at Vilmar on Oct. 19, 1997.

Her down-to-earth faith in the Gospel and ministry at Vilmar was a blessing to the families she served. She was able to share many talents and abilities with the members of the congregation through music, counseling and teaching the Gospel.

Pastor Vieker had a wide range of interests and talents which included cooking, camping, riding bicycle, quilting, designing stained glass, oil painting, and most important her love for music.

She will be sadly missed by her loving husband, Robert, of Greene; her three children, Jon and his wife, Kim, of St. Louis, Mo., Joel and his wife, Vivian, of Livingston, Calif., and Karol Vieker and Ira Baran, of Stockholm, Sweden; five grandchildren, Jonathan, Rebecca, Leslie, William and Samantha; her parents, Floyd and Louise Dent, of Livingston, Calif.; two brothers, Gary Dent, of Colorado, and Mark Dent, of Modesto Calif.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the Nancy L. Vieker Memorial Fund in care of the family. Monies will be sent to the New City Parish, a consortium of churches in inner city Los Angeles dedicated to the preaching of the Gospel and caring for the needy.

** Dan Dean Loney

OSAGE — Dan Dean Loney, 44, died Friday (Oct. 30, 1998) at his home in Osage.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Champion Funeral Home, 702 State St., Osage, with the Rev. Ted Stowers officiating. Inurnment will be in the Osage Cemetery.

There will be no visitation as his body was cremated.

Daniel was born June 19, 1954, in Rapid City, S.D.

He is survived by his wife, Sylvia, of Osage; two sons, Justin, of Osage, and Nathan, of Ames; his father and step-mother; two sisters; a step-brother; and two step-sisters.

He is preceded in death by his grandparents and mother.

** Rev. John J. Brickley

BRITT — The Rev. John J. Brickley, 89, died Friday (Oct. 30, 1998) at Stonehill Care Center, Dubuque.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Britt, with Archbishop Jerome Hanus officiating. Burial will take place in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Britt.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. Monday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Britt, and one hour prior to services at the church. There will be a scriptural wake service at the church at 7:30 p.m. Monday.

Other arrangements are incomplete at this time with Ewing Funeral Chapel, Britt.

** Irene M. Barz

KLEMME — Irene M. Barz, 91, died Saturday (Oct. 31, 1998) at the Kanawha Community Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Immanuel Reformed United Church of Christ with the Rev. Georgia White-Kisslring officiating. Burial will take place in Ell Township Cemetery, Klemme.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday at Tenold Funeral Home, Klemme, and one hour prior to services at the church Tuesday.

Irene M. (Drake) Barz was born Sept. 10, 1907, at Buffalo Center, the daughter of William and Margarite (Reid) Drake. She graduated from the Garner High School with the class of 1927 and taught school in Hancock County.

She was united in marriage to Martin Benjamin Barz on June 24, 1930, at Clear Lake. They lived their entire married life in Klemme.

Irene was a member of the Immanuel Reformed United Church of Christ in Klemme, Women’s Fellowship, Klemme Grandmothers Club, Senior Citizens Klub, and a 55-year member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Klemme.

Irene is survived by her two grandchildren, Scott Carter and his wife, Rose, of North Carolina, and Sue Carter of Raleigh, N. C.; great-grandson, Scott Carter Jr.; and two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Walter (Gladys) Drake, of El Paso, Texas, and Stella Barz, of Klemme.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Martin, in 1995; her daughter, Maxine Krall, in 1992; sisters, Olive Norris, Grace Chase and Gladys in infancy; and brothers, William, Andrew, Walter, Ray and Earl

CHAPIN — Parker F. Koppen, 74, of 177 First St. S.E., died Saturday (Oct. 31, 1998) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center, Mason City.

** Katherine Carmen-Aukes

BUFFALO CENTER — Katherine Carmen-Aukes, 89, died Saturday (Oct. 31, 1998) at her home in Buffalo Center.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the First Congregational Church, Buffalo Center, with the Rev. David Langer officiating. A private family interment will take place at Graceland Cemetery, Buffalo Center.

There will be no public visitation. Funeral arrangements have been completed by Winter Funeral Home, Buffalo Center.

Katherine Carmen-Aukes, the youngest daughter of George and Johanna (Beek) Blank, was born Sept. 30, 1909, at Garner. She was baptized at the Crystal Lake Methodist Church.

When Katherine was a young child, the family moved to Osakis, Minn., where she attended school and grew to womanhood. Her father died in 1927 at the age of 56. In 1932 her mother remarried and moved to Buffalo Center. Katherine followed her mother and began working at the Akkerman Cafe, where she met George A. Carmen. They were married on July 26, 1934, at Garner.

George A. and his father, George M. Carmen, owned and operated the Buffalo Center Tribune. Katherine and her husband continued to run the newspaper after her father-in-law’s death in 1943. George and Katherine were very community minded people. Together they gave a lot and helped buildup Buffalo Center, a town the Carmens dearly loved. On May 30, 1964, her husband, George A., died and Katherine became owner and editor of the Tribune.

Katherine was later united in marriage to R. E. Aukes on Sept. 30, 1975. After her marriage, she left her position at the newspaper. She truly became a part of the new family she gained with R. E. and to the Aukes family, Katherine was their grandmother. R. E. passed away on Nov. 17, 1995.

Katherine was a member of the First Congregational Church of Buffalo Center, past unit and county president of the Legion Auxiliary, the County Cousins, the Senior Citizen’s just to mention a few of the many organizations she was involved with.

She will be missed by her community, nephews, Donald and Roger Neuberger and their families of Clear Lake; her children from her marriage with R. E. Aukes, three daughters, Mildred Dontje and Ruby Hofbauer, both of Forest City, Mary Khowassah, of Iowa City; seven sons, Don of Conway, Ark., Ray of Buffalo Center, Merle of Lake Mills, Robert of Aledo, Ill., Ervin of Menifer, Ark., Rollin of Kiester, Minn., and Loren of Forest City; 38 grandchildren; 56 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, six sisters, two brothers and a granddaughter.

** Mildred Saindon

HAMPTON — Mildred Saindon, 73, died Friday (Oct. 30, 1998) at her home in Hampton.

Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Tuesday with a prayer service at 6 p.m. at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home, Hampton. The Rev. David Nelson will lead the prayer service. There will be no other services.

Mildred Saindon was born March 6, 1925, in Vichy, Mo.

She is survived by two sons, Craig Saindon, Calif., and Michael Saindon, Stuart; five sisters, Bernice McCreey, Lamoni, Opal Johansen, Lamoni, Faye Fuqua, Lamoni, Bette Lufkin, Morrison, Colo., and Tish Butt, Hampton; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two brothers, and one sister.

MASON CITY — Donald D. Dunahoo, 50, of 24 16th St. N.E., Mason City died Sunday, (Nov. 1, 1998) at his home.

** Clarence Francis Bonjour

HAMPTON — Clarence Francis Bonjour, 84, Friday (Oct. 30, 1998) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. at the Congregational United of Christ, Hampton, with the Rev. Gregory Smith officiating. Burial will take place in Hampton Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. today at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home, Hampton.

Clarence Francis Bonjour was born on Oct. 22, 1914, in Franklin County.

Clarence is survived by his wife, Faye Bonjour, Hampton; two sons, Richard Bonjour, Wichita, Kan., and William Bonjour, Decatur, Ala.; four sisters, Lucille Hansen, Hampton, Leona Liekweg, Sheffield, Lois Smith, Marshfield, Mo., and Pearl Liekweg, Sheffield; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one granddaughter, seven brothers and two sisters.

VENTURA — Lucas Weisenstein, 5, of Ventura, died Sunday (Nov. 1, 1998) at the Hancock Memorial Hospital in Britt.

Funeral services are incomplete at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake.

** Helena (Helen) M. Lang

CHARLES CITY — Helena (Helen) M. Lang, 89, of Charles City, died Sunday (Nov. 1, 1998) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at the Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles City.

** Fr. John J. Brickley

BRITT — Fr. John J. Brickley, 89, died Friday (Oct. 30, 1998) at Stonehill Care Center, Dubuque.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1 p.m. at St. Patrick’s Church, Britt, with Archbishop Jerome Hanus, O.S.B., officiating. Burial will take place in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Britt.

Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. today at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Britt, and one hour prior to services Tuesday. There will be a rosary at 7 p.m. tonight, led by Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus followed by a scriptural wake service at 7:30 p.m. Friends and relatives are invited to the church following the graveside services.

Fr. John Brickley, son of Patrick and Mayme (Burns) Brickley, was born Aug. 12, 1909, in Harvard, Ill. At the age of 2, he moved to Kenosha, Wis., with his family. Upon graduating from high school, he attended Loras College, from which he graduated in 1931. He took his theological studies at Sulpician Seminary and did graduate work in sociology and education at the Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C.

He was ordained to the priesthood June 15, 1935, by Archbishop Francis J. L. Beckman at St. Raphael Cathedral, Dubuque.

In 1935, Fr. Brickley was named associate pastor of Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary parish in Cresco. There he taught in the high school, took care of the mission parish of St. Stephen in Chester, and was chaplain of Mercy Hospital, Cresco.

In 1939, Fr. Brickley was named associate pastor of St. Cecelia parish in Ames, where he was also the first chaplain to the Catholic students at Iowa State University. From 1943 to 1949, he was pastor of SS Peter and Paul parish, Gilbert, and Good Shepherd parish, Jewell.

Fr. Brickley was named associate pastor of St. Mary parish, Ackley, in January 1949, and in October 1954, he became pastor of St. Patrick parish, Nevada, and St. Mary parish, Colo. In March 1966, Fr. Brickley was appointed pastor of Sacred Heart parish, Eagle Grove. In 1969 he became pastor of St. Mary parish, Williams.

He was appointed to St. Patrick parish, Britt, in September1973, where he served until his retirement in 1985.

After retirement, Fr. Brickley lived for a time at Lake Corneila near Clarion. He then returned to Britt where he lived until moving to Kenosha, Wis., and eventually to Villa Raphael in Dubupue.

Fr. Brickley is a past president of the Hancock County Ministerial Association and the Britt Lions Club, he was a board member of the Hancock County Right to Life. He is a charter member of the National Association of Priest Pilots. Fr. Brickley has been the National Hobo Chaplain since 1975; he was also a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus.

Fr. Brickley is survived by one sister-in-law, Clara Brickley, of Kenosha, Wis., and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and a sister.

There will be no visitation as his body was cremated.

Daniel was born June 19, 1954 in Rapid City, S.D.

He is survived by his wife, Sylvia, of Osage; two sons, Justin, of Osage and Nathan, of Ames; his father, Dean Loney, and stepmother, Ruth, of Little Cedar; two sisters, Beth Boggs, of Fort Worth, Texas, and Kerry Randall, of Osage; and a step-brother and two step-sisters.

CHAPIN — Parker F. Koppen, 74, of 177 First St. S.E., died Saturday (Oct. 31, 1998) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church, Rockwell, with the Rev. Louie Bram officiating. Interment will be in the Rockwell Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. today and continue on Tuesday, moving to the church one hour prior to services. The family will greet friends from 3 to 5 p.m. today.

Parker was born on Dec. 30, 1923, in Rockwell, the son of Frank H. and Florence R. (Campbell) Koppen. He attended country school at Rockwell and resided in that area until 1971 when he moved to Swaledale. He moved to Chapin in 1981.

Parker was united in marriage to Mae Arlaura Burt on June 17, 1955, in Northwood. To this union was born five children.

Parker was intrigued by small-engine repair and would often be found tinkering in his garage with anything mechanical. He was most happy when he could make broken things run again. He was employed in welding and fabrication work at United Hydraulics in Hampton, retiring about 12 years age. He also enjoyed working with his woodworking tools and building things.

Parker is survived by his four children, Sandra Shurtleff and her husband, Gary, Holyoke, Colo., Sy Koppen, Clear Lake, Everett Koppen and his wife, Barb, Des Moines, Frank Koppen, Swaledale, and Merle Koppen, Lakota; four grandchildren, Jenna, Tawny and Lacy Jo Shurtleff and Anthony Koppen; and two great-grandsons, Andrew and Dylan Stout.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Mae, in March of 1998.

A funeral Mass was held at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S.E., Mason City, with the Rev. Michael Schueller officiating. Burial was in the Elmwood St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City, with full military honors conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Visitation was held Sunday at Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City.

Robert Edward Casey Sr. was born June 17, 1918, in Mason City, the son of Frank and Frances (Hurley) Casey. He married Helen Jean Latimer on Oct. 11, 1944, in Boca Raton, Fla.

Bob graduated from St. Joseph’s Catholic High School in 1935. He attended Mason City Junior College and then graduated from the University of Michigan in 1939. He served in World War II as a second lieutenant in the Army Air Corps as a radar instructor. He also served during the Korean War.

He loved spending time with his grandchildren. He enjoyed fishing and gardening and was a champion rose grower.

Bob was in the automobile business for 44 years working for Prichard Motor Co. and Schukei Chevrolet. He was a life member of the Knights of Columbus, a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church where he was an Eucharistic minister for the homebound and he served on the parish council. He was a charter member of the Newman Booster Club and served as president of the Newman Board of Education.

Survivors include his wife, Jean Casey, Mason City; five children, Mike Casey, Oxnard, Calif., Marc Casey and his wife, Cherie, Dyersville, Bob Casey and his wife, Cathy, Dunwoody, Ga., Jean Casey and her husband, Matt Berry, Clear Lake, and Theresa Rypel and her husband, Jeff, Greenfield, Wis.; seven grandchildren, Cori Casey, Notre Dame University, Kevin Casey, Purdue University, Katie and Robert Berry, Clear Lake, Amy and Oksana Casey, Dunwoody, Ga., and Kaitlin Rypel, Greenfield, Wis.; four brothers and sisters, Marie MacPeak, Nagadoches, Texas, Jack Casey, Valparaiso, Ind., Mary Catherine Casey, Mason City, and Frances Casey, Waco, Texas; and many nieces and nephews.

Donald dearly loved animals, but cats were his favorite. He enjoyed golfing, bowling, and fishing. Donald was a very neat and tidy person who always kept his house, cars and personal belongings in immaculate condition.

On Feb. 21, 1933, he was married to Ruth Caroline Hagenow at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Readlyn.

Arnold was employed by Standard Oil Company in Readlyn until 1945, when the family moved to Independence where they lived for eight years.

In 1953, they moved to Garner where they owned and operated Steege's Coast to Coast Store until 1975, when they retired. In 1993, he moved to Prairie View Apartments and in 1997, to Roger Metz Manor in Winona, Minn.

In August of 1998, he moved to the Fieldcrest Care Center in Hayfield, Minn.

He enjoyed his family and friends, golfing, fishing, playing cards and dominoes.

Wherever they lived, he was an active church member. Among his activities at St. Paul Lutheran Church, he served as chairman of the congregation and was a member of St. Paul Men's Society. He also belonged to the Garner Lions Club and Chamber of Commerce.

He is survived by his daughters, Lois Jensen and her husband, Thomas, of Pearl River, N.Y.; Janet Brooks and her husband, Bob, of Rochester, Minn.; and Dorothea Ollenburg, of LeMars; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; a brother, Victor Steege and his wife, Arlene, of Sun City, Ariz.; and two sisters, Marie Hempy and her husband, Don, of Sun City, Ariz.; and Edna Shore, of Haines City, Fla.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth, on June 21, 1989; parents; two sisters, Irene Booze and LaVera Everding; and an infant brother, William.

** Pearl J. Grundel

MASON CITY — Pearl J. Grundel, 75, 600 N. Kentucky Ave., died Wednesday (Nov. 4, 1998) at her residence.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Wesley United Methodist Church, 1405 S. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. David Shogren officiating. Interment will follow in the Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., and continue one hour prior to services on Friday at the church.

Pearl was born Feb. 24, 1923, the daughter of Henry and Myra (Graves) Ruffridge on a farm outside of Grafton, and later attended country school.

On Feb. 25, 1941, Pearl was united in marriage to Roland "Louie" Grundel at the St. John's Lutheran Church in rural Grafton. The couple farmed all of their lives until retiring and moving to Mason City in 1979.

Pearl loved to travel and was ready to go with anyone willing to take her. She was very involved at the Senior Citizen Center and never missed a day.

Pearl had a great sense of humor and a golden heart. She enjoyed baby-sitting for her grandchildren and other friends. Pearl was continuously talking on the phone with friends and family. Pearly would attend dances to watch people and visit with her friends. Pearl thought camping was a great adventure, but her favorite past time was going out to eat.

Pearl was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church.

Those thankful for having shared Pearl's life include four daughters, Mary and her husband, Glenn Sorbo, of Northwood; Alice and her husband, Roger Schroeder, of Marshalltown; Gloria Richardson, of Mason City; and Sally and her husband, John Lunde, of Mason City; one sister, Ruth and her husband, Clarence Millis, of Northwood; four brothers, Lloyd Ruffridge, of Northwood; Myron Ruffridge, of Manly; Harvey Ruffridge, of Northwood; and Donald Ruffridge, of Northwood; nine grandchildren, Mark and Dennis Bailey, Michele Tweedy, Bob Schroeder, Laurie Neusch, Cynthia Riser, Tara Richardson, and Sean and Sonja Lunde; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Pearl was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Roland on Feb. 15, 1995; and one sister, Lucille Van Orden.

** Vera E. Darrow

CHARLES CITY — Vera E. Darrow, 93, of #16 S. Cedar Terrace, died Tuesday (Nov. 3, 1998) at the Salsbury Baptist Home, Charles City.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Trinity United Methodist Church, Milwaukee and Hulin Streets, with the Rev. J. Larry Vallery, senior pastor, officiating.

Visitation will be held from noon to 9 p.m. Friday at the Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt Street, with the family greeting friends from 4 to 8 p.m. There will be further visitation one hour prior to services at the church.

Vera Elizabeth Darrow was born April 16, 1905, on her grandfather Synder's farm in rural Marshall County.

Survivors include six children, Gladys Winters, of Charles City; Dean Darrow, of Charles City; Keith Darrow, of Waterloo; Paul Darrow, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; Carol Blanchard, of Charles City; and Judy Bluhm, of Charles City; 16 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; several stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, stepmother, one son, one daughter, one brother, three sisters, one grandson and two great-grandsons.

** Wayne E. 'Dutch' Dutcher

CEDAR FALLS — Wayne E. "Dutch" Dutcher, 71, of rural Cedar Falls, died early Wednesday morning (Nov. 4, 1998) at the Covenant Medical Center, Waterloo, of natural causes.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Millersburg Methodist Church, Millersburg, Iowa, with the Rev. John Ling officiating. Burial will be in the Millersburg Cemetery.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, 218 Second St. S.E., Waverly, and one hour prior to services on Friday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

Dutch was born on Jan. 26, 1927, in Plymouth, Iowa, the son of Lloyd and Alma (Hill) Dutcher. He grew up on the family farm and attended country school near Plymouth. Dutch graduated from Plymouth High School in 1944.

He joined the U.S. Army in August of 1945, serving in the 398th Military Police Bn in France. He was honorably discharged on Feb. 4, 1947.

He then attended Iowa State University where he went on to receive a B.S. degree in engineering.

On Aug. 21, 1955, he was united in marriage to Dorla Montross in the Millersburg Methodist Church in Millersburg, Iowa.

Dutch then went to work for Grumman Aerospace in Bethage, N.Y. Dutch next went to Upper Iowa University to teach business administration. They then moved to Clarksville, Tenn., where Dutch taught at Austin, Peay University.

In October of 1988, the couple came to the Cedar Falls area where they lived for the last 10 years.

He was a constituent of the Millersburg Methodist Church in Millersburg, Iowa. Dutch thoroughly enjoyed gardening and photography.

Dutch is survived by his wife, Dorla, of rural Cedar Falls; one daughter and her husband, Andrea and Robie Gronau, of Fort Leonard, Mo.; one brother and his wife, Lee and Lois Dutcher, of Manly, Iowa; one sister and her husband, Virginia and Don Petznick, of Osseo, Wis.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

** Cynthia S. Phelps

KIMBERLING CITY, Mo. — Cynthia S. Phelps, 60, of 13 South Port, formerly of Newton, Iowa, died Monday evening (Nov. 2, 1998) at St. John's Hospital, Springfield, Mo., of cancer.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the Wallace-Pence Funeral Home, 105 S. Second Ave. W., Newton, with the Rev. Steven Pannkuk, pastor of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, officiating. Burial will be in Newton Union Cemetery.

There will be no visitation. Memorials may be made to the Cynthia S. Phelps Memorial Fund.

Cynthia S. Phelps was born Jan. 16, 1938, in Newton, the daughter of John Evans and Dorothy Vermillion Partridge. She was a graduate of Newton Senior High School, Class of 1956.

She was married to Dale Raridon on Jan. 22, 1955. She was united in marriage to Ronald D. Phelps on May 31, 1968, in Newton.

She was a longtime resident of Newton, moving to Kimberling City, Mo., in May of 1996. She was a homemaker.

She was a member of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, in Newton, Iowa.

She is survived by her husband, Ronald D. Phelps, of Kimberling City, Mo.; four sons, Jonathan Dale Raridon and his wife, Allie, of Fisher Island, N.Y.; Scott David Raridon and his wife, Traci, of Des Moines; David Michael Raridon, and his wife, Deidre, of Des Moines; and Scott Randall Phelps and his wife, Sonya, of Kodiac Island, Alaska; and one daughter, Briana Lyn James and her husband, Greggory, of Des Moines; five grandchildren, Scott David Raridon Jr., Samuel David Raridon, John Robert Raridon, Teal Phelps and Tanner Dean Phelps.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Jack Evans.
