** Wilfred M. Becker

ALGONA — Wilfred M. Becker, 76, of 609 S. Thorington St. formerly of Wesley, died Saturday (Nov. 14, 1998) at Iowa Methodist Medical Center, Des Moines.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Wesley, with the Rev. Paul Bormann officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery, Wesley.

Public visitation will be from 2:30 to 9 p.m. today at Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, Algona. Special services include a C.D.A. rosary at 3 p.m., a parish prayer service at 7:30 p.m., and a Knights of Columbus rosary at 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Wilfred M. Becker was born June 6, 1922, in St. Joseph, Iowa.

He is survived by four daughters, Mary Jo Sires, Cedar Rapids, Shirley Rochleau, Algona, Bonnie Juhnke, Mason City, and Julie Becker, Algona; three sons, Leonard Becker, Omaha, Neb., Steven Becker, Algona, and Kevin Becker, Cedar Rapids; 21 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and two sisters, Bernadine Kramer, Algona, and Helen Kayser, LaCross, Wis.

Wilfred was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, and one brother.

** Mildred A. Clemenson

KENSETT — Mildred A. Clemenson, 81, of 3926 Ironwood Ave., died Monday (Nov. 9, 1998) at her home.

Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Elk Creek Lutheran Church, rural Kensett. Inurnment will be in the Elk Creek Cemetery.

Family will greet friends one hour before the service at the church. Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, is in charge of services.

Memorials may be directed to the Mildred A. Clemenson memorial fund.

Mildred was born Feb. 1, 1917, in rural Klemme, the daughter of John S. And Hattie (Weing) Bitker. She moved with her parents to Clear Lake and Hanlontown. She graduated from Manly High School in 1936.

Mildred moved to California, married Gunder Clemenson on March 11, 1940, in Reno, Nev. They moved to Norfolk, Va., and in 1945 they moved to the present address in rural Kensett.

They retired in 1976 and spent their winters in Texas and Florida; beginning in 1983 they spent winters in Mesa, Ariz.

She enjoyed playing five hundred and cribbage. She was a member of Elk Creek Lutheran Church, Kensett.

Mildred is survived by her daughter, Marcia Patton and her husband, Ron, Kensett; two grandchildren, Lacey and Brandon Patton, Kensett; one brother, Johnnie Bitker and his wife, Dolly, Tuscon, Ariz., a half sister, Geraldine Kalaplastos, Lowell, Ark.; and several nieces and nephews.

Mildred was preceded in death by her parents; her stepmother, Mabel Bitker; her husband, Gunner; one sister Gladys Dahl Urbatch; and one brother, Morrie Bitker.

** Hester W. Beck

CLEAR LAKE — Hester W. Beck, 89, of 2001 N. Shore Drive, died Saturday (Nov. 14, 1998) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City. Other arrangements are incomplete at the funeral home.

** Goldie Hazel Murray

MASON CITY — Goldie Hazel Murray, 86, of 780 S. Pierce Ave., died Saturday (Nov. 14, 1998) at Iowa Methodist Hospital, Des Moines.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Wayside Chapel of the First United Methodist Church, Mason City, with the Rev. Douglas Anderson officiating. Interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will begin after 2 p.m. today at Fullerton Patterson-James Funeral Chapel, Mason City. The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. at the Chapel.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the North Iowa Girl Scouts.

Goldie was born on a farm at Plymouth on Sept. 2, 1912, the daughter of Lurton D. and Josie (Reynolds) Helm. She is the last survivor of nine children.

She graduated from Mason City High School in 1929 and then worked as a secretary for Jacob E. Decker and Sons for four years, then for the Mason City school system for 16 years, of which 13 were as a secretary.

On June 27, 1933, in Albert Lea, Minn., Goldie was united in marriage to Charles Westly Murray of Manly. To this union was born four children.

She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church and was a troop leader for the Girl Scouts. She was also a member of the Women's Club in 1988 and 1989. She taught Sunday School and Bible School.

In her early years, Goldie played piano and worked in vaudeville. When she was 18, she drove the Model T to the Grand Canyon. She kept her mind alert by working crossword puzzles and followed politics with a passion.

Goldie will be long remembered by her surviving two daughters, Catherine and her husband, Robert Murray Shannon, Rogers, Ark., and Deborah and her husband, Ray Dafflitto, Clive; one son, Charles W. and his wife Doris Murray, Irving, Texas; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband on Oct. 27, 1963; her daughter, Shirley Farnum, Dec. of 1991; and her eight sisters and brothers, Winifred Buchanan, Flossie Stephens, Olive Weida, Shirley, Harold, Wayne, Ole and Bruce Helm.

** Paul J. Pedelty

CLEAR LAKE — Paul J. Pedelty, 87, died Friday (Nov. 13, 1998) at Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Clear Lake Cemetery with the Rev. Sharon Betsworth of First United Methodist Church officiating.

There will be no visitation. Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be directed to the Paul J. Pedelty Memorial Fund.

Paul was born Nov. 14, 1910, in Mason City, the son of Walter B. And Hazel M. (Hill) Pedelty. Paul graduated from Mason City High School and the University of Iowa. Following graduation, Paul worked for John Deere and Co. as an mechanical engineer.

Paul is survived by one brother, Walter B. Pedelty Jr. and his wife, Pauline, of Cassville, Mo.; a nephew, Jay Pedelty and his wife, Judy, of Mason City; a niece, Marilyn Parsons and her husband, Roger, of Johnston; and four great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Jerould.

** John O. Starks

MASON CITY — John O. Starks, 69, of 380 S. Yorktown Pike, died of cancer, Saturday (Nov. 14, 1998) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church, Mason City, with the Rev. Terry Hamilton-Poore officiating. Interment will take place in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the NIACC Foundation.

John was born Sept. 14, 1929, in Louisville, Ken., the son of W. Edwin and Gertrude (St. Clair) Starks. John graduated from Marshfield, Wis., High School, attended Lawrence College and graduated from the University of Iowa, becoming a Certified Public Accountant.

During the Korean War, John served in the U. S. Air Force. John was associated in various capacities with St. Clair-Starks menswear in Mason City for many years.

He married Barbara Waggoner in 1957 in Mason City. Barbara died in 1976. He married Mary Challacombe Beard in 1977 in Mason City.

While living in Mason City, he was a member and ruling elder of the First Presbyterian Church, a five-term member of the Board of Directors of North Iowa Area Community College, serving as Board president for much of that time. John was also a member and past-president of the Iowa Association of Community College Trustees. He served as a member and president of the Public Health Nursing Association, director of the Mason City Chamber of Commerce, member of the Mason City Board of Adjustment and member of the budget committee of the United Way.

During that time he also served a term as chairman of the Financial and Operations Group, Menswear Retailers of America. John retired from the Finance Department of the City of Davenport Sept. 30, 1998.

John is survived by his wife, Mary, of Mason City; daughters, Elizabeth "Bibby" Starks and her husband, Ralph Chermak, of Des Plaines, Ill., and Nancy Starks Beavers and her husband, Stephen, of Mason City; sons, Ed Starks and his wife, Linda, of Fort Collins, Colo., John Beard and his wife Felicitas, of Pleasanton, Calif., Paul Beard and his wife, Gina, of Choteau, Mont., Mark Beard and his wife, Robin, of Appleton, Wis., and David Beard, of Topeka, Kan.; a sister, Georgiana Harris and her husband, Jack, of Appleton, Wis.; a brother, William Starks and his wife, Janice, of Victor, N.Y.; a brother-in-law, Tom Waggoner and his wife, Sally, of Mason City; grandchildren, Jeremy and Mark Beavers, of Mason City, Brittney Starks, of Fort Collins, Colo., Brian Beard, of Atlantic, Iowa, Roberto Beard, of Pleasanton, Calif., Anna, Joseph, Jonathan, Matthew, Leah and Aubrie Beard, of Choteau, Mont., and Amy and Daniel Beard, of Appleton, Wis.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, and one grandchild, Jordan.

** Curtis W. Amundson

JOICE — Curtis W. Amundson, 76, died Thursday (Nov. 12, 1998) at North Iowa Hospice, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Beaver Creek Lutheran Church in rural Joice with the Rev. Steve Smith and the Rev. Milton Johnson officiating. Burial will take place in Beaver Creek Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark, Forest City.

Curtis W. Amundson was born on a farm in Worth County on July 11, 1922, the son of Wilhelm Amundson and Clara (Finsaas) Amundson. He was baptized on Aug. 20, 1922, at Beaver Creek Lutheran Church and confirmed at Concordia Lutheran Church on May 16, 1937. Curtis attended school at Clark County school and finished his education in the Fertile schools.

On Oct. 18, 1953, he married Norma Singelstad. The couple lived in the Fertile-Joice area all their lives, farming the Finsaas family farm. Curtis retired in 1983.

He was a lifelong member of Beaver Creek Lutheran Church where he served in various church offices over the years. He was a charter member of Nordic 502 Sons of Norway and a member of the United Ostomy Association. Curtis loved genealogy and belonged to the Lime Creek Genealogical Association and the Worth County Historical Society. He was a longtime sexton for the Beaver Creek Cemetery Association. He enjoyed music and antiques and was a self-taught pianist.

Curtis is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Norma Amundson, of Joice, two sisters, Orva Gustafson, of Lake Mills and Viva Carpentier and her husband, Harry, of Forest City; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Alfred and Kari Singelstad, of Northwood; two sisters-in-law, Martha Flugum, of Albert Lea, Minn., and Helen DeLooper, of Winston-Salem, N. C.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Blanch Anderson; a brother-in-law, James Gustafson; and an infant nephew, Ronly Carpentier.

CLEAR LAKE — Harriet K. Bushman, 57, died Sunday (Nov. 15, 1998) at home in Clear Lake.

FERTILE — Larry R. McCormick, 63, of 2333 340th St., died Saturday (Nov. 14, 1998) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center, Mason City.

** Alma O. Williams

ALBERT LEA, Minn. — Funeral services for Alma O. Williams will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, 1998, at Grace Lutheran Church Chapel, Albert Lea, with the Rev. Harold Deye officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery.

Visitation will be held one hour before services on Thursday at the church.

Bonnerup Funeral Service, 525 W. Clark St., Albert Lea, is in charge of arrangements.

Alma died at her residence on Sunday (Nov. 15, 1998) at the age of 92.

Alma, the only child of Hans and Thorbjor (Bidne) Kaldal was born April 4, 1906, at Lake Mills, Iowa. The family moved to Northwood, Iowa in 1908, where Alma graduated from Northwood High School in 1924.

She attended St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minn., and was a graduate of Miss Wood's College, Minneapolis, in 1929. She was an elementary education teacher.

On June 24, 1936, Alma was married to Arthur Williams in Minneapolis. They lived in Los Angeles for seven years before moving to Northwood, taking over the Kaldal Homestead Farm.

In 1968, they moved to Albert Lea, and in 1976, they took up residence at Thorne Crest North Retirement Center Apartments.

Alma enjoyed traveling, creative handwork, music and visiting with friends.

Survivors include cousins, Bernard Bidne and Bertrum Bidne, of Northwood; Howard Bidne, of Cedar Falls, Iowa; Wilbur Thomas, of Edina, Minn.; Mildred Drentlaw, of Northfield, Minn.; Ilamae Lund, of Portland, Ore.; and Brita Dugstad, Martha Norheim, Ingebjorg Hirth, Ida Gudvangen, Leif Rygg and Ingebrigt Bidne, all of Norway; also nephews, Robert Williams, of Richfield, Minn., and Otho Kinsley, of Primghar, Iowa; nieces, Karen Vratimos, of Lake Forest, Ill.; Gwain Griffin, of Boston; Noel Purcell, of Sacramento, Calif.; Lynn Wood, of Winnetka, Ill.; several great and great-great-nieces and nephews. She is also survived by god-daughter, Carol Schenck, of Grand Rapids, Minn.; and god-son, Ron Martin, of Fort Collins, Colo.

Alma was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Arthur, in 1984; and cousins, Swen Rygg and Eleanor Wilson.

Memorials are requested to be given to Grace Lutheran Church, Albert Lea, or to Thorne Crest North Retirement Center.

** Robert Rockwood

GARNER — Robert Rockwood, 58, of Knoxville, formerly of Garner, died Monday (Nov. 16, 1998) at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Des Moines.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Garner, with the Rev. John Hemann officiating. Burial will be in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Britt.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Cataldo Funeral Chapel, Garner, with a 6:30 p.m. rosary.

Other arrangements are incomplete at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel, Garner.

** Virgil S. Bridgeford

MASON CITY — Virgil S. Bridgeford, 78, of 1455 Second St. S.E., died Monday (Nov. 16, 1998) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave.

Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. Thursday until time of services at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., where other arrangements are incomplete.

** Larry R. McCormick

FERTILE — Larry R. McCormick,63, of 2333 340th St., Fertile, died Saturday night (November 14, 1998) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center, Mason City.

Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, November 18, 1998, at Fullerton Patterson James Funeral Chapel, 123 Second St. S.E., Mason City, with the Rev. Dennis Cahill, of Holy Family Catholic Church, officiating.

Visitation with the family will begin at noon on Wednesday at the funeral home. Larry’s cremains will be inurned at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery on the grave of his son.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to the Larry R. McCormick Memorial Fund.

Larry was born on November 28, 1934, in Garner, the son of Michael L. and Inez (Shaver) McCormick. He attended Garner High School and then entered into the service of his country with the Marine Corps, serving in Japan and Hawaii. He was honorably discharged as a sergeant first class.

Larry was united in marriage to Pat Marsh on February 21, 1955, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Mason City. To this 43 year marriage, four children were born.

He operated Linotype machines for the Whittemore Paper, the Northwood Anchor and the Mason City Globe-Gazette.

He has spent the last 20 years driving truck for area companies, the last of which was Michaelson Trucking until ill health forced his retirement.

He was a member of the VFW in Garner, enjoyed bowling and would read everything he could, often finishing a book in one night.

Larry is survived by his wife, Patricia "Pat," of Fertile; two daughters, Debbie McCormick, of Fertile, Paula McCormick and Sandra Scheib, both of Joice; and one son, Kelly and his wife, Angela McCormick, of Lake Mills; five grandchildren, Robert, April, and Logan McCormick, and Ashley and Lauren Thrond; his mother, Inez McCormick, of Mason City; four sisters, Cleo Anderson, of Mason City; Ruth Kilgore, of Klemme; Reta and her husband, Bill Kerdus, of Mason City; Jean and her husband, Dave Malley, of Clermont, Fla; and two brothers, Michael and his wife, Myrtle McCormick, of Santa Maria, Calif., and Dan and his wife, Joyce McCormick, of Garner.

He was preceded in death by his 10-year-old son, Robert Allen McCormick in 1968, his father, Michael, in 1976; and one sister, Rita Marie McCormick.

** Hester W. Beck

CLEAR LAKE — Hester W. Beck, 89, of 2001 N. Shore Dr., Clear Lake, died Saturday (Nov. 14, 1998) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Fred Lewis, of United Methodist Church of Clear Lake, officiating.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. and until time of services on Wednesday.

Memorials may be given to the MacNider Art Museum in her memory.

Hester was born July 25, 1909, in New Sharon, the daughter of John and Mae (Cledenger) Wehrle. Hester graduated from New Sharon High School, attended William Penn College and graduated from the University of Iowa with an English degree.

On June 15, 1936, she married C. Frederick Beck, in Kansas City, Mo. They were married 48 years until his death in 1984.

Hester did graduate study at Drake University and through correspondence courses. She substitute taught English at Mason City High School and at Monroe and Roosevelt Junior High Schools.

Hester also taught Sunday school for over 10 years at First United Methodist Church in Mason City. While living in Mason City, Hester had been a member of the First United Methodist Church. In Clear Lake, she was a member of the United Methodist Church.

Hester was also a member of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority, Eastern Star, P.E.O. Chapter IY, helped start the Mason City Humane Society and was involved with MacNider Museum.

Hester is survived by one son, John Beck and his wife, B.J., of Phoenix; daughter, Jane Moss and her husband, Philip, of Lincoln, Mass.; grandchildren, Matthew Moss, Ann Moss, Christopher Beck, Allan Beck, Tracy Markson and Patrick Murphy Beck; and great-grandchildren, Cole Thomas Beck and Kassandra K. Beck.

Hester was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and two brothers.

** Harriet K. Bushman

CLEAR LAKE — Harriet K. Bushman, 57, of Clear Lake, died Sunday (Nov. 15, 1998) at her home.

She was cremated and a memorial service will be held at a later date.

Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of North Iowa, 232 Second St. S.E., Mason City, 50401, in lieu of flowers.

Harriet was born Aug. 31, 1941 at Robertson, the daughter of Vern and Jeanette (Ubben) Nichols.

She is survived by two daughters, Renae M. Choda, of Adela, and Lynita Bushman, of Clear Lake; one brother, Robert Nichols and his wife, Marian, of Ogden; two sisters, Janice Tiano, of Westminster, Calif. and Vernita Nichols, of Mason City; two nieces, seven nephews; and a very special friend, Alice Graves, of Mason City.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

** Janet Parnell

HOUSTON — Janet Parnell, 57, of Houston, died Thursday (Nov. 5, 1998) in Houston.

Memorial services were held Nov. 9, 1998, in Houston, with burial services at Shaw Funeral Home, Saturday Nov. 14 in Battle Creek, Mich.

Survivors include her children, Raymond Parnell and his wife, Tina, of Battle Creek, Mich.; Christina Wood, of Versailles, Ky.; Lisa Daye and her husband, Sam, of Huntington Park, Calif.; nine grandchildren; her mother, Sally Ryner, of Nora Springs, Iowa; brother, Michael Ryner and his wife, Pam, of Nora Springs; two sisters, Susan Staudt and her husband, Cletus, of Marble Rock, Iowa; and Shirley Doughty and her husband, Karl, of Rockledge, Fla.

She was preceded in death by one son and two daughters.

** Phillip B. Wildeboer

ALLISON — Phillip B. Wildeboer, 80, of Allison, died Monday (Nov. 16, 1998) at the Allison Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Trinity Reformed Church, in Allison. Burial will be in the Allison Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home, Allison.

Phillip B. Wildeboer was born March 9, 1918, in Parkersburg.

Survivors include his wife, Vivian Wildeboer, of Allison; one son, Randy Wildeboer, of Allison; one daughter, Connie Shears, of Sioux Falls, S.D.; four grandchildren; one sister, Gretchen Biretz, of Waterloo; and one brother, Bruno Wildeboer, of Clayton.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers.

** Margaret Jobe

HAMPTON — Margaret Jobe, 86, of Hampton, died Friday (Nov. 13, 1998) at the Hampton Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home, Hampton. Burial will be in the Hampton Cemetery.

There will be no visitation. The body will be cremated.

Margaret Jobe was born March 24, 1912, in Eau Claire, Wis.

Survivors include four sons, James C. Jobe, of Sacramento, Calif.; George Jobe, of Anaheim, Calif.; Thomas Jobe, of Des Moines; and Ronald Jobe, of Hampton; three daughters, Virginia M. Rodgers, of Hampton, Kathryn Hines, of Pasadena, Calif., and Patricia Jobe, of Hampton; one sister, Marcelle Goldsmith, of Minneapolis; and one brother, Melford Cournoyer, of St. Paul, Minn.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by parents, husband, one son, one great-grandson, one sister, and one brother.

RAKE — Gordon O. Quamme, 74, of Rake, died Monday (Nov. 16, 1998) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Zion Lutheran Church in Rake.

Virgil S. Bridgeford was born Dec. 17, 1919, in Mason City, the son of Sam and Mary (Hagen) Bridgeford. Virgil attended Mason City schools and has lived in Mason City all of his life.

Virgil worked for various grocery stores and grocery warehouses in Mason City. Virgil also worked for Land O’ Lakes and retired from there in 1976.

Virgil married Harriet Gibbs on June 2, 1945, at the Klemme Methodist Church.

Virgil enlisted in the U.S. Army and served for a short time during World War II.

Virgil was a member of the First United Methodist Church for over 50 years. He was a member of Harding Masonic Lodge, American Legion, United Commercial Travelers, and Teamsters Union No. 828.

He is survived by his wife, Harriet Bridgeford, of Mason City; one sister, Hazel "Toots" Ellingson and her husband, Merle, of Mason City; one brother, Richard Bridgeford, of Mason City; one sister-in-law, Isabelle Gibbs, of Salem, Ore.; two brothers-in-law, Asa Gibbs and his wife, Dewie, of Garner, and Ronald Gibbs, of Garner; one uncle, Robert Bridgeford and his wife, Mabel, of Conrad; nieces and nephews, Debbie Reicherts and her husband, Bob, of Minneapolis, David Ellingson and his wife, Cheryl, of Mason City, Julie Pals and her husband, Neal, of Clear Lake, Joe Gibbs and his wife, Kathy, of Garner, Ronna Myers and her husband, Jerry, of Garner, and Lora Ward and her husband, Lester, of Lansing, Ill.; and several great-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Sam and Mary Bridgeford; and three sisters-in-law, Jane Bridgeford, Lois Gibbs and Fay Gibbs.

MASON CITY — Bill E. Baker Sr., 68, of 902 Elm Drive, died Monday (Nov. 16, 1998) at his home.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with the Rev. Fred Wood, of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, officiating. Inurnment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery, with military honors conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

There will be no visitation. His body was cremated.

Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., is in charge of arrangements.

Bill E. Baker Sr. was born on Nov. 8, 1930, at Cartersville, the son of Clyde and Viola (Burgess) Baker.

On Sept. 20, 1954, he married Shirley LeDuc at Albert Lea, Minn.

Bill enjoyed hunting and fishing and he loved dogs.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Shirley Baker, of Mason City; seven children, Terry LeDuc and his wife, Barb, of Burchinal; Linda Crawford and her husband, John, of Plymouth; Claudine Koepke and her husband, Jim, of Forest City; Dustie Baker, of Mason City; Jeff Baker and his wife, Roxanne, of Mason City; Bill Baker Jr. and his wife, Debra, of Mason City; and Sue Jones and her husband, Randy, of Manly; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one sister, Phyllis Prosevec, of Mason City; one brother, Dennis Baker and his wife, Opal; as well as nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one grandson, Randy Jo Jr.; one great-granddaughter, Kristina; one brother, Richard; his mother-in-law; his father-in-law; and three brothers-in-law.

RAKE — Gordon O. Quamme, 74, of Rake, died Monday (Nov. 16, 1998) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Gordon O. Quamme was born July 16, 1924, in Buffalo Center.

CLEAR LAKE — Maxine Rose Sears, 67, of Clear Lake, died Tuesday (Nov. 17, 1998) at her home.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 20, at the United Methodist Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Fred Lewis and Hospice Chaplain, John Ayers officiating. Inurnment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City

Maxine was born Feb. 17, 1931, in Forest City, Iowa, the daughter of Carl and Fern (Fogue) Monson. She married Rancher (Warren) Sears on Sept. 29, 1979, at the Ranch, Clear Lake, Iowa.

Maxine was a member of the Methodist Church in Clear Lake, where she was a member of the Methodist Women Group and Church Circle. She was also a member of the Clear Lake Evening Lions, Clear Lake Lioness, Muddy Pond CB Club and the River City Tri Club, Mason City, (where her handle was "Mean MaMa"), Moose Lodge and Double F Club.

Her many accomplishments were receiving the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award (Lions International highest award), Lioness of the Year Club Award, Past State Lioness Chairperson, Past President of Lioness Club, and District Cabinet of Lions District 9 x 2.

Maxine was a crafter, loved antique dishes and collecting old china and being a Foster Grandma. She also enjoyed fishing, hunting, animals, collecting dolls and Indian artifacts.

Maxine is survived by her husband Rancher (Warren) Sears; four sons, Michael Boulton, of Waco, Texas; Mark Boulton, of Kalamazoo, Mich.; Matthew Boulton, of Fort Levenworth, Kan.; Max Boulton Jr. and his wife, Hyeon Ju, of Seoul, Korea; two daughters, Marsha Thayer, of Clear Lake; and Merry "Orfun" Boulton-Trosper and her husband, William, of Clear Lake; one stepdaughter, Judy Hunt and her husband, Carl, of Osakis, Minn.; three sisters, Arlene Bryson and her husband, Bill, of Alden, Minn.; Carole Engstler and her husband, Lawrence, of Garner; and Bonnie Berndt, of Glenville, Minn.; two brothers, Marvin Monson and his wife, Jackie, of Forest City; and Roger Monson and Eva, of Lake Mills; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by both parents; and one son, Martin Boulton; and one stepdaughter, Jane Lynn Sears.

ROCKWELL — Ella C. Cahill, 99, formerly of 221 First St. North, Rockwell, died Monday (Nov. 16, 1998) at the Rockwell Community Nursing Home, Rockwell.

Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, 1998, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Rockwell, with the Rev. Stephen Meyer and a nephew of Ella's, the Rev. Dennis Cahill, of Holy Family Catholic Church, officiating. Interment will follow in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Rockwell.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Sacred Heart Catholic Parish Center, with a scripture service at 7 p.m., followed by a rosary.

Those honored to be her pallbearers are her grandchildren, Michael Nash, Steve Sturges, Dennis Sturges, Ron Cahill, Scott Cahill, Jeff Cahill, and Terry Cahill.

Ella was born on May 28, 1899, the daughter of John and Mary Ann (Donahue) Beecher on a farm near Dougherty. Ella attended school in the Dougherty area and in 1918, graduated from St. Joseph's Academy in Des Moines. She then returned to the Dougherty area to teach school for a few years.

On Feb. 7, 1923, Ella was united in marriage to John Cahill in Dougherty. The couple farmed in the Dougherty and Cartersville area until 1930 when they moved to Rockwell where they had resided ever since.

Ella and John owned and operated the Cahill Garage and the John Deere Implement in Rockwell, for many years. After retiring the couple wintered in Texas for many years. In her free time, she enjoyed working in the yard, flower gardening, listening to music, watching sports especially the Cubs, Celtics, and the Iowa Hawkeyes. She cherished her family and her church. Ella was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and was recently recognized for 66 years of consecutive membership. During those years, she held many different offices.

Ella was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, in Rockwell, where she had also been the organist for many years.

Those thankful for having shared Ella's life include four daughters, Mary and her husband, John Sturges, of Rockwell; Helen and her husband, Leo Nash, of Naples, Fla.; Tina and her husband, Paul Sturges, of Waverly; Gi Gi Cahill, of Milwaukee, Wis.; three sons, Jerry and his wife, Andra Cahill, of Mechanicsburg, Ohio; Edward and his wife, Patricia Cahill, of Waterloo; and Michael and his wife, Shirley Cahill, of Albuquerque, N.M.; 28 grandchildren; 60 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.

Ella was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John in 1981; two daughters, Patricia and Jean Marie; two sons, Martin and Patrick; three sisters; and four brothers.

FOREST CITY — Dennis Destival, 59, of Forest City, died Tuesday (Nov. 17, 1998) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Dennis E. Destival was born in Britt, Iowa, on April 30, 1939, the son of Florian and Amelia (Ezarski) Destival. He later moved with his family to Janesville, Iowa and graduated from high school there.

He married Joan Andreasen in Chicago, Ill., on Sept. 12, 1959.

The couple worked for the Union Pacific Railroad in Chicago before moving to Iowa. They moved to Forest City in 1984. Dennis worked for a time at Winnebago Industries. For the past 12 years, he has worked as a machinist for Iowa Mold Tooling Company in Garner.

Dennis loved being outdoors. He enjoyed fishing, camping, gardening and taking care of his yard. He was an animal-lover as well, feeding the birds, squirrels and any stray animals needing attention. He liked playing cards with family and friends. Spending time with his grandchildren was very special to him.

Dennis is survived by his wife, Joan Destival, of Forest City; his mother, Amelia Destival, of Janesville, Iowa; two sons, Dennis M. Destival, of Forest City and James E. Destival and his wife, Melinda, of Forest City; four daughters, Denise Phelps, of Forest City; Jenny L. CLEAR LAKE — Ernist "Ernie" D. Hayungs, 61, of Clear Lake, died Tuesday (Nov. 17, 1998) at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester, Minn.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Zion Lutheran Church, 112 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Jana Swenson officiating. Interment will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Ernist was born in rural Marble Rock, on Aug. 8, 1937, son of Nikolaus (Claus) and Thelma (Ackley) Hayungs.

He married Ione Smit on Aug. 12, 1956, at Meservey, Iowa.

Ernist graduated from Meservey High School in 1955 and lived in Meservey until they moved to Clear Lake in 1957.

He worked for Davis & Keith Construction, Clear Lake, from 1955 to 1963, Young Construction, Garner from 1963 to 1965; Great Plains Lumber Yard, Mason City, Iowa, from 1965 to 1972, Great Plains Kensett Home Division, Kensett, Iowa, as plant superintendent, 1972 to 1985, at which time he was forced to retire due to ill health. Ernist had a lung transplant May 20, 1992.

He enjoyed golf, fishing, picture framing, woodworking, family and grandchildren.

Ernist is survived by his wife, Ione Hayungs, of Clear Lake; three children, Lynn Hayungs and his wife, Martha, of McAllen, Texas; Brian Hayungs and his wife, Gayle, of Highlands Ranch, Texas; Brenda Minton and her husband, Brad, of New Braunfels, Texas; two brothers, Larry Hayungs and his wife, Emilie, of Carterville, Ill.; and Roger Hayungs and his wife, Mary, of Rolfe, Iowa; one sister, Donna Sonquist, of Harlingen, Texas; nine grandchildren, Ryan, Curtis, Kyle, Dustin Hayungs, of McAllen, Texas; Jake and Justin Hayungs, of Highland Ranch, Colo.; Jessica, Nikolaus, and Abby Minton, of New Braunfels, Texas.

MARSHALLTOWN — Doris I. Propst, 73, of 1101 Jackson St., died Tuesday (Nov. 17, 1998) at her home while under the care of Iowa River Hospice.

Following cremation rites at Pursel-Davis Funeral Home and Crematory, memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20, 1998, at the Pursel-Davis Funeral Home, 405 W. Main St., Marshalltown, with Mr. Phil Galloway officiating. Visitation will be held from noon until time of services on Friday at the funeral home, where the family will greet friends. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Memorial Gardens.

A memorial fund has been established.

She was born Feb. 13, 1925, at Tama, Iowa, the daughter, of John C. and Elizabeth M. (Fredricks) Shuler. She was raised on a farm outside of Gilman where she graduated from high school.

She was married to Mark Richard Propst on July 26, 1945, in Gilman and they later resided in Marshalltown.

In 1954, they moved to Mason City and she worked in the Park Hospital Cafeteria as a salad maker. After her husband's death in 1967, she returned to Marshalltown and went to work at the Marshalltown Medical & Surgical Center Cafeteria where she retired in 1990. She then worked for Stones Restaurant where she retired in 1998.

She is survived by sons, Dan (Sharon) Propst, of Marshalltown and Clark (Eileen) Propst, of Mason City; sisters, Betty Stalzer, Darlene Gallaway and Gloria Westcott, all of Marshalltown, Helen Hand, of Tama and Rhonda Meyer, of Baxter; by brothers, Richard Shuler, of Kellogg; Rogor Shuler, of Melbourne; and Ronnie Shuler, of State Center; by sisters-in-law, Myrtle Todd and Beverly Wilkening, both of Newton; three grandchildren, Emily Bryant, Sarah Birke, and Danielle Propst, all of Mason City; and four great-grandchildren, Melodee Birke, Lane Bryant, Elora Birke, and Riley Bryant, all of Mason City.

INDEPENDENCE — Mrs. Guneld T. McAleer, 87, of Independence, died Wednesday morning (Nov. 18, 1998) at the People’s Memorial Hospital in Independence, following a long illness.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. John’s Catholic Church in Independence, with the Rev. Aloysius J. Vorwald, officiating, with music provided by St. John’s Choir with Tim Leonard soloist accompanied by Mrs. Frank Brimmer, organist.

Guneld was born on Feb. 28, 1911, in Albion, Neb., the daughter, of Charles L. and Bessie T. (Newman) Thompson. She graduated from the Albion High School in Albion, Neb., and from the Van Sant Business College in Omaha, Neb.

On June 15, 1937, she was united in marriage to Lester F. McAleer in Excelsior Springs, Mo. The couple resided in Davenport, Buffalo and Petersville, prior to coming to Independence in 1953.

Guneld was a member of the Sew N Sew Club, St. John’s Rosary Society and St. John’s Catholic Church in Independence, Iowa. She enjoyed knitting, quilting and china painting.

She is survived by two sons, Patrick McAleer, of Plano, Texas and Tim McAleer, of Torrence, Calif.; four daughters, Mary Forst, of Marshalltown; Barbara McAleer, of Hermosa Beach, Calif.; Beth Hosch, of TegaCay, S.C.; and Jean McAleer, of Mason City; 15 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. McAleer was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lester F. McAleer, in 1990; two daughters, Sharon McAleer in 1983 and Dorothy Rowan in 1989; three brothers, William Thompson, Art Thompson and Gib Thompson; and two sisters, Oma Thompson and Mary Thompson.

Marion Merrick was born Aug. 21, 1902, in Scott Township, Floyd County.

Survivors include two sons, John Hardman, of Charles City, and Edward Hardman, of Peoria, Ill.; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Florence Balderson, of Keosauqua, and Maxine Merrick, of Sun City, Ariz.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and one sister.

** Ernist ‘Ernie’ D. Hayungs

CLEAR LAKE — Ernist "Ernie" D. Hayungs, 61, of Clear Lake, died Tuesday (Nov. 17, 1998) at St. Marys Hospital, Rochester, Minn.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. today at the Zion Lutheran Church, 112 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Jana Swenson officiating. Interment will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation was held on Thursday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel. There will be additional visitation one hour prior to services at the church.

Memorials may be given to the Ernist D. Hayungs Memorial Fund.

Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, is in charge of arrangements.

Ernist was born in rural Marble Rock, on Aug. 8, 1937, son of Nikolaus (Claus) and Thelma (Ackley) Hayungs.

He married Ione Smit on Aug. 12, 1956, at Meservey.

Ernist graduated from Meservey High School in 1955 and lived in Meservey until they moved to Clear lake in 1957.

He worked for Davis & Keith Construction, Clear Lake, from 1955 to 1963; Young Construction, Garner, from 1963 to 1965; Great Plains Lumber Yard, Mason City, from 1965 to 1972; and at Great Plains Kensett Home Division, Kensett, as plant superintendent from 1972 to 1985, at which time he was forced to retire due to ill health. Ernist had a lung transplant May 20, 1992.

He enjoyed golf, fishing, picture framing, woodworking, family and grandchildren.

Ernist is survived by his wife, Ione Hayungs, of Clear Lake; three children, Lynn Hayungs and his wife, Martha, of McAllen, Texas; Brian Hayungs and his wife, Gayle, of Highlands Ranch, Colo.; Brenda Minton and her husband, Brade, of New Braunfels, Texas; two brothers, Larry Hayungs and his wife, Emilie, of Carterville, Ill.; and Roger Hayungs and his wife, Mary, of Rolfe, Iowa; one sister, Donna Sonquist, of Harlingen, Texas; nine grandchildren, Ryan, Curtis, Kyle, Dustin Hayungs, of McAllen, Texas; Jake and Justin Hayungs, of Highlands Ranch, Colo.; Jessica, Nikolaus, Abby Minton, of New Braunfels, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Robert Hayungs; and one nephew, Nick Perkins.

** Wayne Henrey Hammon

LEROY, Minn. — Wayne Henrey Hammon, 78, of LeRoy, died Saturday (Nov. 14, 1998) at the Spring Valley Care Center, Spring Valley, where he had resided for a short time.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Nov. 17, at the First Presbyterian Church, LeRoy, with the Rev. Steve Elderbrock officiating. Interment was in the LeRoy Cemetery.

Arrangements are by the Hindt-Hutchins Funeral Home, LeRoy, Minn.

Wayne was born Jan. 3, 1920 in Garner, Iowa, to Samuel Charles Hammon and Gertrude Mabel Neuhring Hammon. He attended Garner schools, graduating in 1938. After graduation, he worked as a farm hand for a short time before entering the United States Army.

He entered the Army at Fort Des Moines, Iowa, on Jan. 24, 1942, and served in the 759th Light Tank Battalion, seeing action at Normandy, northern France, Ardennes, the Rhineland and in Central Europe. He earned expert qualification with the bayonet and earned marksman qualification with the rifle.

Wayne earned the American Theater Ribbon, European-African-Middle Eastern Ribbon, the Silver Battle Star, the Good Conduct Medal, six Overseas Stripes and one Service Stripe. He was discharged on Oct. 22, 1945, at Fort Sheridan, Ill.

On Aug. 30, 1947, he married Olive Elliott in Mason City, and to this union eight children — Wayne Jr., Julie; Steve, Terry, Joy, Bobby, Mark and Kristy — were born.

Wayne and Olive farmed in the Garner area until moving to the Spring Valley and Ostrander area in Minnesota in 1962 where they farmed until 1971 at which time Wayne went to work for Martz Furniture in LeRoy where he stayed until the store was sold.

He is survived by his wife, Olive, of LeRoy; son, Wayne "Jr." (and his wife Sharon, of LeRoy; daughter, Julie (Mrs. George) Shrumpf, of Rochester; son, Steve, of Rochester; son, Terry and his wife, Peggy, of LeRoy; daughter, Joy, (Mrs. Larry) Hindt, of Spring Valley; son, Mark and his wife, Lori, of Reynoldsville, Pa.; and daughter, Kristy (Mrs. Bim) Lowers, of Lake Mary, Fla.; 21 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one brother, Lynn, of Spring Valley; two sisters, Lois (Mrs. Clair) Blakewell, of Clear Lake, Iowa; and Doris Novak, of Fertile, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Bobby; a sister-in-law; and a brother-in-law.

** Lois I. Anderson

MASON CITY — Lois I. Anderson, 95, of Mason City, died Wednesday (Nov. 18, 1998) at Good Shepherd Health Center.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, 1998, at the Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Kenneth Hatland officiating. Interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E. Mason City.

Lois was born on Nov. 14, 1903, at New Sharon.

Lois is survived by one daughter, Faye Brunsvold, of Hermann, Mo.; one son, Frank Anderson, of Forest City; one sister, Faye Draper, of Independence, Mo.; one brother, Max Rockwell, of Des Moines; 13 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sons, one sister, and two brothers.

** James C. Barclay

MASON CITY — James C. Barclay, 78, 55 Circle Terrace, Mason City, died Tuesday (Nov. 17, 1998) at the I.O.O.F. Home.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 120 First St. N.E., with the Rev. Robert Towner officiating.

The body was cremated. There will be no visitation. Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., is in charge of arrangements.

James Crawford Barclay was born to Paul Vernon and Katharyn (Mensch) Barclay on March 10, 1920, in Mason City.

After graduating from Mason City High School in 1938, he attended Iowa State University where he was vice-president of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.

In January 1942, he left for Bakersfield, Calif., to begin flight training in the Air Corps, Army of the United States. In February 1943, he was assigned to the South Pacific where he was an operations officer for the 72nd Bomb Group, and achieved the rank of Major.

After completing 42 bombing missions he was returned to the United States, where he married Martha Ann Thomson, of Houston, Texas on May 17, 1944.

He was assigned to the Elgin Field in Florida to be the Bomb Test Officer there for the Bomb Equipment and Bomb Testing section of the proving Ground Command. He was released from military duty in 1945 and in 1946, obtained a B.A. degree in economics from the University of Iowa. Upon his return to Mason City, he owned and managed the Barclay Company until his retirement in 1984.

He was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, and was a past member of the Mason City Airport Commission and Rotary Club. He served on the board of directors for Pioneer Federal Savings and Loan and for the First National Bank of Mason City.

He is survived by his wife, Martha Barclay, of Mason City; three children, Florence Diane Ratcliffe, and her husband, Rod, of Southport, Conn.; Wendy Katharyn Baker, of Stamford, Conn.; and Thomas James Barclay and his wife, Marianne, of Mason City; five grandchildren, Jamie and Katie Ratcliffe, Josh Becker, Reed and Adam Barclay; and one sister, Evelyn Canter, of Phoenix.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and a grandson.

** Gladys L. Gaiser

ROCKFORD — Gladys L. Gaiser, 86, of Rockford, died Wednesday (Nov. 18, 1998) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Zion Lutheran Church, Rockford, with the Rev. John Albrecht officiating. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery, Rockford.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Sheckler Colonial Chapel, 114 N. Hawkeye, Nora Springs, and one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church.

Gladys L. Gaiser was born Jan. 19, 1912, in Marble Rock, the daughter of Roy J. and Ida L. (Linderkamp) Lines. Gladys was baptized and confirmed at the Lutheran Church in Rockford. She graduated from Rockford High School in 1930.

On Feb. 22, 1933, she married Wesley C. Gaiser in Rockford.

Gladys owned and operated the Red Triangle Cafe in Rudd, during the 50’s and 60’s.

She enjoyed quilting, playing cards and watching the Iowa Hawkeyes. She loved to bake pies and go fishing and dancing with her husband; they went dancing every week.

Gladys enjoyed her family and loved hosting family reunions three times a year.

She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church, in Rockford, and was very active in many of the church organizations and the women’s guild. She was also a member of the WHO Club in Rudd and the Senior Citizens Center, in Rockford.

Those left to cherish her memory are one son, Harold Gaiser and his wife, Barb, of Mason City; one daughter, Marian Dight and her husband, Robert, of Charles City; seven grandchildren, Michael Gaiser and his wife, Jodie, of Mason City; Steven Gaiser and his wife, Staci, of Mason City; Katherine Kehm, of Phoenix; Scott Dight, of Charles City; Sandra Staudt and her husband, Jeff, of Rockford; Steven Dight and his wife, Teresa, of Winona, Minn.; Derrick Gaiser, of Independence; 12 great-grandchildren, Joshua and Kelly Kehm, Christina, Katie and Kara Gaiser, Trevor and Taylor Gaiser, Jessica and Joshua Staudt, Carter and Kristin Dight, and Wesley Gaiser; one daughter-in-law, Carolyn Gaiser, of Nora Springs; one stepgrandson, Shane Fingalsen and his wife, Erin, Kan.; and one stepgreat-granddaughter, Blake.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Wesley; an infant brother; her son, Gene Gaiser; and one stepgranddaughter, Stephanie Fingalsen.
