** L.J. 'Jack' Skyles Jr.

MASON CITY — A memorial Mass will be offered at 9 a.m. Saturday, July 18, 1998, for Leo John "Jack" Skyles Jr. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S.E., Mason City. Interment will be in Elmwood St. Joseph Cemetery.

L.J. "Jack" Skyles Jr., 72, formerly of Mason City, died Feb. 12, 1998, in Temple, Texas.

Jack is sadly missed by his friends and family.

** Adeline F. Carothers

AUSTIN, Minn. — Adeline F. Carothers, 81, of 1903 Burr Oak Dr., Unit A., Austin, died Tuesday (July 14, 1998) at the Austin Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, in Austin, with the Rev. James I. Mikkelson officiating.

There will be a 3 p.m. graveside service at Concord Township Cemetery, in Garner.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Clasen-Jordan Mortuary, 209 Second Ave. N.W., Austin, Minn., and one hour prior to services at the church.

Memorials are preferred to Donors Choice.

Adeline was born on April 25, 1917, to the Rev. Herman and Caroline (Haberkamp) Greimann in Dale, Wis.

She graduated from Garner High School in 1935. She went to Waldorf College in Forest City from 1935-1936 and then taught in a rural school from 1936-1938.

She married Charles D. Carothers on June 19, 1938, and moved to Austin, Minn.

She attended Winona State College and then graduated from Mankato State College with a bachelors degree in science.

She then taught in the rural schools of Hollandale, Brownsdale, Blooming Prairie and then 21 years in the Austin Public Schools and retired in 1977.

She and Charles then moved to Lake Mills, and later moved back to Austin in the early 1980's.

She was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church and taught Sunday School there.

She loved her family and friends, and held close in her heart the students she taught in elementary and special education classes.

Her hobbies included reading and gardening.

She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Ronald and Carol Carothers, Owatonna, Minn.; Jim and Linda Carothers, of Johnston, Iowa; and daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Bob Peters, of Harmony, Minn.; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sisters and brothers-in-law, Charlotte and Leonard Swanson, of Austin, Minn., and Dorothy and Norman Anderson, of Ventura, Iowa; brothers and sisters-in-law, Curtis and Ruth Greimann, of Garner, Iowa, and Eugene and Doris Greimann, of Garner, Iowa; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles D. Carothers on Sept. 22, 1996; her parents and a granddaughter, Faith Casterton.

** Sylvia Levinson

MASON CITY — Sylvia Levinson, widow of long-time Mason City attorney Nathan Levinson, died Saturday (July 11, 1998) in San Francisco, Calif.

Graveside services will be held at 11:30 a.m. today, July 16, at the Minneapolis Jewish Cemetery.

Sylvia (Gill) Levinson was born in Minneapolis, Minn., on June 5, 1906.

She was a graduate of the Minneapolis school system and resided in Minneapolis until her marriage on June 28, 1936.

Sylvia was dedicated to her family, church and community. Many organizations benefited from her devotion to others, including Adas Israel Synagogue, Sisterhood, Hadassah, Red Cross, Grey Ladies, the Mental Health Center of North Iowa, League of Women Voters, YWCA, PTA, Womens Club, Monday Club and P.E.O. She served as president of many of these organizations.

Years before formal programs became available, she spent many hours transporting special needs children. Sylvia was instrumental in the establishment of the Mason City Senior Citizens organization.

She continued to live in Mason City following the death of her beloved husband on May 11, 1982.

In November of 1990, she moved to San Francisco to be near her family. She remained active in both cultural and family activities until her death.

She was an independent but optimistic person, who was always willing to help others, but never wanted to be a burden to others herself. She loved reading, cooking, the arts and the theater.

She was a loving mother and grandmother and was a dear friend to all who knew her.

Survivors include her daughter, Raleigh and her husband, Dr. Gary H. Cohen, of Honolulu, Hawaii; her granddaughter, Laurie Cohen, of San Francisco, Calif.; and two sisters, Evelyn Gill and Ruth Gill, both of San Francisco.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and a sister, Harriet.

** Jane Reese Schultz

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — Jane Reese Schultz, 76, of St. Joseph, Mo., formerly of Clear Lake, died Wednesday (July 15, 1998) at the Hope House in St. Joseph.

Memorial services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Christ Episcopal Church, St. Joseph, Mo.

Mrs. Schultz's body was cremated. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Meierhoffer-Fleeman Funeral Home, 1946 Colhoun St., St. Joseph, Mo.

Born July 12, 1922, in Columbia, Mo., she spent her youth in Columbia. On Sept. 1, 1945, she married Alfred "Dutch" Schultz in Columbia, and they moved to Clear Lake, Iowa, in 1946.

While living in Clear Lake, she was involved in the Twentieth Century Club, St. Andrew's and St. John's Episcopal Churches in Clear Lake and Mason City, the Clear Lake Arts Council, and the McNider Museum.

Mrs. Schultz's contributions to the arts and the humane treatment of animals will be remembered by family and friends. Mr. and Mrs. Schultz moved to St. Joseph in 1996.

She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, the Oak Grove Homemakers Club, Pi Beta Phi Alumnae Association and the Runcie Club, all of St. Joseph.

She is survived by her husband, Alfred "Dutch" Schultz, St. Joseph, Mo.; two daughters, Amy Grier, of St. Joseph, Mo., and Sara Nelson, of Green Bay; her son, Fred Schultz, of Green Bay ; and nine grandchildren, Sara, Beth, Becky and Fred Grier, of St. Joseph, Mo., Amie, Jacquie and Steve Nelson and Molly Schultz, of Green Bay, Wis., and Chuck W. Schultz, of Durango, Colo.

She was preceded in death by her son, Steve Schultz, of Durango, Colo.; and her parents, Anna and Herbert Reese, of Columbia.

** Erman Hansen

ALGONA — Erman Hansen, 99, of Algona, died Tuesday (July 14, 1998) at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home, Algona.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church, Algona, with the Rev. Phillip Webb officiating. Burial will be in the East Lawn Cemetery.

Erman was born on Oct. 14, 1898, at Titonka.

Survivors include his wife, Ada, of Algona; children, Billy Hansen, of Edmonds, Wash.; Ida Baxter, of Algona; Carl Hansen, of Algona; Clara Riebhoff, of Algona; and Mary Ann Kain, of Inver Grove Heights, Minn.; 20 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; nine stepgreat-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, his parents, one sister and three brothers.

** Zola Z. Stockdale

HAMPTON — Zola Z. Stockdale, 58, of Hampton, died Tuesday (July 14, 1998) at home.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home, Hampton, with the Rev. Gregory Smith officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Ackley.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. today at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home.

Zola Z. Stockdale was born Nov. 10, 1939, in Franklin County.

Survivors include her husband, Tony Stockdale, of Hampton; and her mother, Norma Siedschlag, of Ackley.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents.

** Mae L. Battleson

MASON CITY — Mae L. Battleson, 81, of Mason City, died Wednesday (July 15, 1998) at the Good Shepherd Health Care Center.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at the Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E.

** Blanche Griga

OSAGE — Blanche Griga, 85, of Osage, died Monday (July 13, 1998, the Faith Home, Osage.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the St. Ansgar Baptist Church, St. Ansgar, with the Rev. Gary Gonnerman officiating. Burial will be in St. Ansgar Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Champion Funeral Home, Osage and one hour prior to services at the church.

Blanche was born Jan. 19, 1913, in Miltonvale, Kan.

Survivors include one daughter, Shirley Stille, of Osage; two sons, David Griga, of Eagan, Minn., and Donald Griga, of St. Ansgar; four grandchildren; one sister, Luella Slaichert, of St. Ansgar; and two brothers, Leonard Fox and Edgar Fox, both of St. Ansgar.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and one brother.

** Melvin L. Larsen

CLEAR LAKE — Melvin L. Larsen, 84, of Clear Lake, died Wednesday (July 15, 1998) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center, East.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake.

** Marion E. Horvath

MASON CITY — Marion E. Horvath, 76, 630 Briarstone Dr., died Tuesday (July 14, 1998) at the Good Shepherd Health Center.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Highway 18 & Clark, Charles City, with the Rev. David Beckman, of Holy Family Catholic Church, officiating. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Charles City.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with a 7 p.m. Scripture wake service. There will be further visitation one hour prior to Mass on Friday morning at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.

Memorials may be given to Hospice of North Iowa.

Marion E. Horvath was born Dec. 14, 1921, in Flint, Mich., the daughter of Henry and Helen (Myzyck) Bathke. Marion moved several times in Michigan with her family and then settled in Racine, Wis.

Marion graduated from Washington Park High School in Racine.

Marion married Al Horvath on Jan. 3, 1942, in Racine. Marion and Al moved to Charles City in November of 1945.

Marion worked for Salsbury Laboratories from 1952 until she retired in 1981 as a Lab Tech. In 1985, they moved to Mason City and Marion has resided at Good Shepherd Nursing Home since October of 1995.

Marion enjoyed retirement and her family. She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Mason City.

Survivors include her husband, Al Horvath, of Mason City; two sons, Peter Horvath, Kansas City, Kan., and Tom Horvath and his wife, Mary Jean, Mason City, Iowa; one daughter, Mary Jo Kellogg and her husband, Ray, of Eagle Grove, Iowa; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one brother, Henry Bathke and his wife, Pauline, of Minneapolis, Minn.; and several nieces and nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two great granddaughters
