** Alice Passehl

LATIMER — Alice Passehl, 76, died Friday (July 24, 1998) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Dows United Methodist Church with the Rev. James Turner officiating. Burial will be at the Hampton Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday at Sietsema Vogel Funeral Home, Hampton.

Alice was born May 26, 1922, in Hardin County.

She is survived by her husband, Wilbert Passehl, Latimer; a daughter, Joy Williams, Alexander; three stepdaughters, Bonnie Clark, Cedar Rapids, Karen Zander, Coulter, and Linda Osborne, Lincoln, Neb.; two stepsons, Jerry Passehl, Latimer, and David Passehl, Anita; a sister, Marie Nielsen, Dows; two brothers, Carl Kienol, Iowa Falls, and Glenn Kienol, Shelbina; and many grandchildren.

** Daryle Hobbiebrunken

SOUTH SIOUX CITY, Neb. — Daryle Hobbiebrunken, 56, died Friday (July 24, 1998) at Lake Country Inn, Clear Lake.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Rockwell, with the Rev. Dennis Cahill officiating. Burial will be at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Rockwell.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Sacred Heart Chapel, Rockwell. A scriptural wake service will begin at 7 p.m. Funeral arrangements were completed by Grarup Funeral Home, Sheffield.

Daryle Hobbiebrunken was born in Rockwell on Jan. 29, 1942, the son of Alvin and Dorothy (McLaughlin) Hobbiebrunken. He attended the Thornton school system, graduating with the class of 1960. Following high school, he attended Mason City Junior College before working for B&E trucking, hauling tile, and the Sheffield Creamery, where he hauled dairy products.

Daryle entered the agriculture and real estate sales force, working in the North Iowa area before moving to Arizona in 1985 where he began selling petroleum and chemical products.

In June of this year, he moved to South Sioux City, Neb., and was a partner in Envirologic Solutions, which produces odor and bacteria control for livestock buildings.

Daryle enjoyed golfing, fishing in Canada and country-western dancing and was an avid Nascar fan.

Daryle is survived by one daughter, Michelle Victorino of Des Moines; one son, Chad Hobbiebrunken of Des Moines; two grandsons, Bradley and Daniel Hobbiebrunken; his mother, Dorothy, of Rockwell; three brothers, Terrel Hobbiebrunken of South Sioux City, Neb., Ken Hobbiebrunken and his wife, Brenda, of Thornton, and Hal Hobbiebrunken and his wife, Judy, of Hastings, Neb.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father and one brother.

** Margaret Buren

LELAND — Margaret Buren, 97, died Friday (July 24, 1998) at the Lake Mills Care Center.

A memorial service will be held during the 5 p.m. Mass Saturday, Aug. 1, at St. James Catholic Church, Forest City, with the Rev. Craig Steimel officiating. Burial will be at a later date at St. James Cemetery, Forest City.

Funeral arrangements were completed by Mittelstadt Funeral Home, Lake Mills. There will be no visitation.

Margaret Buren was born Sept. 29, 1901, at Leland.

She is survived by one brother, W.P. "Hap" Buren of Leland.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and two sisters.

CLEAR LAKE — Lee Friedrichs, 70, of 408 South Ninth St., died Saturday (July 25, 1998) at his home.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Ward Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 North Fourth St., Clear Lake.

** Emma E. Thorland

THOMPSON — Emma E. Thorland, 94, died Tuesday (July 21, 1998) at the Heritage Home in Bancroft.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Zion Lutheran Church, Thompson, with the Rev. Richard Newgard officiating. Interment took place at West Prairie Lutheran Cemetery, rural Thompson.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Winter Funeral Home, Thompson.

Emma Eudora Thorland was born March 30, 1904, near Thompson.

She is survived by a son, Dean Thorland of Buffalo Center; three daughters, Virjean Skogen of Thompson, Marlene Vaske of Bancroft and Violet Thorland of Bloomington, Minn.; 15 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.

Emma was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two sons, one sister and five brothers.

** August Meyer

BRITT — August Meyer, 78, died Thursday (July 23, 1998) at Hancock County Memorial Hospital, Britt.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at First Lutheran Church, Britt, with the Rev. James A. Mattson and the Rev. Merlin Norris officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery with graveside military rites by the Britt Veterans Ceremonial Unit.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. today at the Cataldo Funeral Home, Britt.

August Eldon Meyer was born Aug. 2, 1919, near Titonka.

He is survived by his wife, Emily Meyer of Britt; three sisters, Caroline Mayland of Britt, Marie Voth of Boise, Idaho, and Kathryn Mabry of Ventura, Calif.; and a brother, Frank Meyer of Britt.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.

MASON CITY — Lillian Schmidt, 69, of 532 13th Street, died Saturday (July 25, 1998) at North Iowa Mercy Healthy Center East, Mason City.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City.

** Harold L. Halama

MASON CITY — Harold L. Halama, 51, of 1112 North Hampshire Ave., died Friday (July 24, 1998) at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 North Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Kenneth Hatland officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, with full military honors conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church Tuesday.

Harold L. Halama was born June 17, 1947, in Nora Springs, the son of Frank and Nona (Hedden) Halama. Harold grew up in Nora Springs and graduated from Nora Springs High School.

He served in the Army during Vietnam and was stationed in Germany.

He married Lonnie Godden on Aug. 30, 1982, in South Dakota.

He worked for the city of Mason City for many years in various departments.

Harold loved camping and fishing and enjoyed working on cars and playing cards. He was a member of the Mason City Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He is survived by his wife, Lonnie Halama, Mason City; four children, Brian Halama, Minnesota, Jodee Halama, Colorado, Amy Wike, Mason City, and Chad Halama, Mason City; one brother, Jerry Halama, Mason City; his mother-in-law, Ardis Willis, Mason City; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Danny Halama; one sister in infancy; and one niece, Tracy Djuren.

** Lee Friedrichs

CLEAR LAKE — Lee Friedrichs, 70, of 408 South Ninth St., died Saturday (July 25, 1998) at his home.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dennis Cahill officiating. Interment will follow at the Clear Lake Cemetery with full military honors conducted by the Clear Lake VFW.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Ward Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 North Fourth St., Clear Lake.

Lee was born Sept. 17, 1927, in Butler county to Carl and Hattie (Abben) Friedrichs. The family later moved to rural Floyd County where Lee attended the Marble Rock Consolidated School.

After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served in the Pacific Theater during the latter period of World War II. He was a continuous member of the VFW Post 4868 in Clear Lake for 35 years and served as quartermaster for a number of years.

He was united in marriage to Marilou Klassen on Aug. 12, 1950, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Elma. The couple lived in Greene a short time before moving to Des Moines where Lee was employed by the district division of the Ford Motor Co. He progressed to the position of zone field manager, which included dealer contact work over a good share of Iowa. In 1963, Lee purchased the Ford dealership in Clear Lake which he operated into the 1970's. He later was a partner in several local businesses and purchased Clear Lake Appliance in 1978, which he operated until 1992 when he retired.

Lee thoroughly enjoyed the 25 years he lived on North Shore and fully participated in both summer and winter activities on the lake. He was a dedicated Hawkeye fan and an overall sports fan. His most favorite pastime was playing golf. He was also an avid reader.

He is survived by his wife, Marilou, Clear Lake; a daughter, Sandy Paulson, West Branch; two sons, Bob Friedrichs and his wife, Debbie, Mason City, and Scott Friedrichs, Philadelphia, Pa.; three grandchildren, Kristin Paulson, West Branch, and Jessica Friedrichs and Joe Friedrichs, both of Mason City; four sisters, Evelyn Staudt and her husband, Clarence, Marble Rock, Carol Davis and her husband, Ron, Rockford, Mary Koenigsfeld and her husband, Stephen, Marble Rock, and Wilma Bock and her husband, Richard, Charles City; one brother, Robert Friedrichs and his wife, Elva, Lisbon; and many nieces and nephews.

NORA SPRINGS — Grant B. Hunt, 87, of 24134 277th St., Nora Springs, died Sunday (July 26, 1998) at the Nora Springs Care Center.

** Bessie Marie Bleakney

NEWTON — Bessie Marie Bleakney, 87, of 400 E. Eighth St. S., Apt. 7, died Sunday (July 26, 1998) of heart failure at Skiff Medical Center, Newton.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Reese Funeral Home, 302 N. Second Ave. E., Newton, with the Rev. Daryl Pals of St. Luke United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will take place at Newton Union Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at noon Tuesday and the family will greet friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorials may be directed to St. Luke United Methodist Church, Newton.

Bessie Marie Bleakney was born Aug. 4, 1910, in rural Newton to George C. and Minnie K Broderson Preston. She graduated from Newton High School in 1928. She married Ernest LeRoy Bleakney and was a homemaker working on the farm with her husband. She also taught in rural schools in Jasper County.

Bessie was a life-long resident of Jasper county. She lived in the Newton area 55 years and in Kellogg for eight years. She was a member of Newton No. 3 Homemakers and St. Luke United Methodist Church, Newton.

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Karen Bleakney, Newton, and John and Nicki Bleakney, Mason City; one daughter and son-in-law, Kathryn "Katie" and Harry Jones, Newton; one sister, Mardell Allgood, Oskaloosa; nine grandchildren; and several great- and stepgreat-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and three brothers.

** Norlynne Ann Plath

MASON CITY — Norlynne Ann (Rankin) Plath, 67, of 606 Tenth St. N.E., died Sunday (July 26, 1998) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. James Lutheran Church, 1148 Fourth St. S.E., Mason City, with the Rev. David Anderson officiating. The body was cremated.

Her family will greet friends from 4:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City.

Memorials may be made to St. James Lutheran Church or Hospice of North Iowa in memory of Norlynne Ann Plath.

Norlynne Ann Plath was born April 28, 1931, at her home in rural Garner, the daughter of Norman and Verna (Hollatz) Rankin. She attended parochial school and was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church, rural Garner.

She graduated from Ventura High School in 1948 and worked for the telephone company in Mason City. Norlynne was united in marriage on May 20, 1949, to Dale Plath and they took up residence in Mason City. During their marriage they had the opportunity to live in several different communities including Britt, Garner, Mason City, Winona, Minn., Van Wert, Ohio, Mansfield, Ohio, Owosso, Mich., Rockford, Ill., and Davenport, Iowa. They returned to Mason City in 1991 for retirement.

Before retirement, Norlynne was active in the community and church working in various capacities and making many lasting friendships. Since retirement, she has been a faithful member at St. James Lutheran Church. She had a very strong faith in Jesus as her Lord and Savior and served Him faithfully in her daily life.

She enjoyed fishing, gardening and collecting jewelry and glassware and angels of all sorts. She loved garage sales and auctions. She had a special joy spending time with her family.

Left to cherish her memory is her husband, Dale Plath, Mason City; one son, Mike Plath, Leland; one daughter, Cris Kittleson, Mason City; four grandchildren, Emily Kittleson, Mason City, and Jamie, Sarah, and Brian Plath, all of Leland; one sister, Lonnie Nicholson and her husband, Gary, Phoenix, Ariz.; and two nieces, Tamara Snyder and her husband, Mark, and their children, Andrea and Audrey, all of Phoenix, Ariz., and Kimberly Swain, her husband, Carl, and their son, Casey, all of Sylvester, Ga.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Norman and Verna Rankin of rural Garner.

ALGONA — Delores (Mrs. Jack) Schultz, 74, died Sunday (July 26, 1998) at Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 Wednesday at the First Lutheran Church in Algona.

MANLY — Matthew Allen Harnish, infant son of Jarod A. and Cassandra Harnish of Manly, died Saturday (July 25, 1998) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.

According to the wishes of the family, there will be no services or visitation. Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 East Spring St., Manly, is in charge of the arrangements.

Matthew Allen Harnish was born on July 25, 1998, the son of Jarod A. and Cassandra (Witt) Harnish.

Matthew is survived by his parents, Cassandra and Jarod Harnish, Manly; paternal grandparents, Linda Harnish, Manly, and Rodney Harnish, Bellevue, Neb.; maternal grandparents, James and Linda Witt, Manly; maternal great-grandmother, Doreen Hunt, Manly; maternal great-grandfather, Delbert Witt, Mason City; maternal great-great-grandmother, Dora Boelman, Mason City; paternal great-grandparents, Delores Sletten, Mason City, and Robert Denney, Mason City; paternal stepgreat-grandfather, Marvin Sletten, Mason City; paternal great-great-grandmother, Goldie Carlson, Onawa; two aunts, Katrina Witt, Manly, and Kristina Harnish, Manly; three uncles, Alex Witt, Manly, Keeley Harnish, Manly, and Patrick Harnish, Mason City; and other relatives.

MASON CITY — Lillian I. Schmidt, 69, of 532 13th Street S.E., died Saturday (July 25, 1998) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.

** Mae E. Alm

FOREST CITY — Mae E. Alm, 88, of Forest City, died Sunday (July 26, 1998) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, with the Rev. David Samuelson officiating. Burial will be in Madison Township Cemetery.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to services on Thursday at the church.

Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark, Forest City, is in charge of arrangements.

Mae Esther Alm, the daughter of Martin and Malinda (Skogerboe) Evenson was born July 20, 1910, near Roland, Iowa.

She was baptized into the Lutheran faith as a child at Salem Lutheran Church at Roland, by the Rev. Sanvin, and confirmed at Bethany Lutheran Church at Thompson by the Rev. J.J. Skarpness.

As a child, she moved with her family to the Thompson area. She attended the rural schools of Linden Township and graduated from Thompson High School in 1929.

She married Carl Alm on Sept. 3, 1931, in Minneapolis, Minn. They started farming at Thompson and then moved to the Forest City area in 1936 where they continued to farm. They later moved into Forest City.

She was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church.

She is survived by her children, Luther Alm and his wife, Avis, of Forest City; Carol Arne and her special friend, John Spangler, of Ballwin, Mo.; Sandra Becraft and her husband, Joe, of San Antonio, Texas; and Bonnie Fryar and her husband, Dennis, of Mason City; 10 grandchildren, Chris Arne and his wife, Venessa, Jason Arne and his wife, Lisa; Linda Hoveland and her husband, Bob, Mark Alm, John Becraft, Cindy Lipp and her husband, Dale, Matthew Fryar and his wife, Bridget, Mike Fryar, Sara Fryar, and Malinda Mills and her husband, Jody; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Carl on May 1, 1988; two daughters, Melinda and Marilyn Alm; three brothers, Julian, Myren and Kenneth Evenson; and two sisters, Anora Evenson and Minnie Borseth.

ALGONA — Delores V. Schulz, 74, of 708 S. Thorington St., died Sunday (July 26, 1998) at Mercy Hospital, Des Moines.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First Lutheran Church, Algona, with the Rev. Daniel Mangler officiating. Burial will take place at East Lawn Cemetery, Algona.

Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, Algona.

Delores was born Feb. 17, 1924, at Eagle Grove.

She is survived by her husband, John Schulz, Algona; three daughters, Patricia Naffziger, Atlanta, Ga., Jan Reina, Houston, Texas, and JoEllen Wesselmann, Adel; seven grandchildren; and two sisters, Gwen Hendrickson, Watsonville, Calif., and Gloria Presthus, Marshalltown.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one son and one brother.

** Shirley Lane

HUMBOLDT — Shirley lane, 60, of Humboldt, died Sunday (July 26, 1998) at Humboldt County Memorial Hospital, after an extended illness.

Memorial services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 29, at the Congregational United Church of Christ, Humboldt, with the Rev. Jill Sneed Bobholz and Eugene Smith, officiating. Interment services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Union Cemetery, Humboldt.

Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home, 612 Second Ave. S., Humboldt, is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be given to New Hope Village, Box 887, Carroll, Iowa 51401; Congregational United Church of Christ, Humboldt, Iowa, or Camp Courageous, Box 418, Monticello, Iowa 52310, in her memory.

Shirley Putney, the daughter of William W. and Martha E. (Baldwin) Putney was born on Oct. 25, 1937, in Waterloo, and grew to adulthood in the farming community of the area.

She graduated from the Orange Township High School and attended the University of Iowa.

Shirley and Clark Lane were united in marriage on Jan. 26, 1958 at the South Waterloo Church of the Brethern at Orange Center. The couple made their home in Humboldt were Mrs. Lane was a member of the Congregational United Church of Christ; P.E.O. and New Hope Village Family Association.

Those who have shared the joy of her life include her husband, Clark; daughter and son-in-law, Deborah and Dr. James Loux, of Clear Lake; son and daughter-in-law, C.A. and Tracy Lane, of Fraser, Colo.; and son, Bill Lane, of Carroll; granddaughters, Sarah and Megan Loux; sister, Kay Glessner, of Sturgeon Bay, Wis.; nieces, Ann and Holly Glessner.

She was preceded in death by her father and mother.

** Elizabeth Hinrichs

ROCKWELL — Elizabeth Hinrichs, 96, formerly of 302 Adams, Rockwell, died Monday (July 27, 1998) at the Rockwell Community Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Fullerton Funeral Chapel, 120 S. Third St., Rockwell, with Pastor Lewis Bram, of the Rockwell Baptist Church, officiating. Interment will follow in the Rockwell Cemetery, Rockwell.

Visitation will be held from 12:30 p.m. until time of services on Wednesday at the funeral chapel.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the Elizabeth Hinrichs Memorial Fund.

Elizabeth was born May 13, 1902, the daughter of Gerhard and Eliese (Hemmioltmanns) Hinrichs in Bath Township.

She graduated from Rockwell High School and then attended the University of Northern Iowa and later graduated from Drake University in Des Moines. Elizabeth taught school for many years at Rockford, Britt and Ottumwa Public Schools.

Following retirement, she returned to Rockwell where she made her home with her sister, Helene Jackson. She was a very active member of the Rockwell Baptist Church.

In 1982, Elizabeth moved to the Rockwell Community Nursing Home.

Those thankful for having shared her life include one sister, Alma Mitterer and many nieces and nephews.

Elizabeth was preceded in death by her parents; seven sisters, Anna Hinrichs, Meta Callahan, Mary Bergman, Emma Ryburn, Martha Nelson, Clara Grummond and Helene Jackson; and four brothers, John, Henry, Herman and William Hinrichs.

** Jerry Lee Wilberg

ALGONA — Jerry Lee Wilberg, 60, of 1021 E. McGregor St., Algona, died Sunday (July 26, 1998) at the Algona Manor Care Center.

Memorial services will be held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, Bancroft, with Pastor Steve Turner, of Trinity Lutheran Church of Algona, officiating. Interment will be in the Blakjer Lutheran Church, Seneca.

MASON CITY — Bruce A. Vrchota, 45, of 412 E. State St., died Monday (July 27, 1998) at his home.

Bruce A. Vrchota was born June 4, 1953, in Mason City, Iowa, the son of Curtis A. and Verna R. (Winchell) Vrchota.

Bruce attended and graduated from Mason City High School in 1971. Bruce worked for Huber Supply Company, Barclay Supply Company, Fastenal and Sound World. Bruce was self-employed and repaired electronic equipment in his home.

Bruce enjoyed music, his flower gardens, bats and welding. He also designed and did metal work and created the sun dial in the Fieldstone Addition in Clear Lake.

GREENE — Funeral services for Thomas Lee Tindall, 49, of 212 Barrett Place, Edmund, Okla., formerly of Greene, will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, 1998, at the Bennezette Wesleyan Church, Aredale, with Pastor Rod Griffin officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene. Military honors will be conducted by the Tack Barnett Post 268 American Legion of Greene.

Thomas Lee Tindall was born June 27, 1949, in Greene, a son of Ray Anderson and Olive Lucille (Junker) Tindall; and died Sunday (July 26, 1998) at his home in Edmund, Okla.

He received his education at the Greene Community Schools, graduating in 1967. He received an associate degree in police science from Oklahoma State University Technical Institute; a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Central State University in Oklahoma and a master’s degree in political science/urban affairs from Central State University in 1986.

Thomas was a veteran law enforcement officer in central Oklahoma with his career beginning in 1970 at the Bethany Police Department where he served until 1979. During this time, he served a three-year hitch with the United States Marine Corps.

He served with the Oklahoma City Police Department from 1979 to 1982 as a traffic officer, until he accepted a position with the Guthrie Police Department as deputy and seven months later became chief, where he remained until August 1985. Most recently, he served as training officer in the Basic Academy-Council on Law Enforcement Education and Training.

He was a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, Oklahoma Association of Chiefs of Police where he served as third vice president, Metro Oklahoma Chiefs of Police Association, National Peace Officers Association, Oklahoma Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association, National Rifle Association, past member of Police Marksman Association, Fraternal Order of Police and the Lions Club of America.

Living family members include his son, Paul Anderson Perry, of Tulsa, Okla.; a daughter, Amanda Ray Tindall, of Oklahoma City; his mother, Olive Tindall-Anklam and her husband, Lawrence Anklam, of Bristow; two sisters, Karyl Jane McFate, of Donahue, and Kathlyn Rae Murray, of Ada, Okla.; and one brother, Larry J. Tindall, of Sebka, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his father, Ray A. Tindall, in 1979, and a brother, Garry "Bud" Tindall on April 13, 1998.

GARNER — Wencl Kadrlik, 66, of Garner, died Monday (July 27, 1998) at his home.

Wencl Thomas Kadrlik, the son of Vencl and Antonia (Guehle) Kadrlik, was born Aug. 2, 1931, at Milladore, Wis. He attended school at Roosevelt, Thief River Falls, and East Grand Forks, Minn., graduating from Sacred Heart High School in East Grand Forks.

He joined the U.S. Navy, serving as a sonar man aboard the minesweeper, the U.S.S. Seer, during the Korean Conflict. Following his discharge from the Navy, he attended and graduated from the University of Minnesota.

To finance his college education, he taught ballroom dancing for the Arthur Murray Organization in Minneapolis and Rochester. It was there he met the former Catherine Flood. They were married on Dec. 29, 1962, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garner.

In November 1963, they moved to Garner where Wencl joined his father-in-law in the Hancock County Abstract Company. Wencl and Catherine were the parents of one son.

Wencl was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church where he served on the Parish Council, taught religious education, sang in the choir, served as a lector and an extraordinary minister. He was a Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, a former Grand Knight and Trustee and member of the Men's Society. He was a lifetime member of the Garner V.F.W. and American Legion.

Wencl was very civic minded and worked tirelessly to make Garner and our North Iowa area a vital, growing and wholesome environment in which to live and work. He was a member of the Garner City Council, the school board, Crown Jewel Development Group, Garner Chamber of Commerce and was one of the people instrumental in establishing the Garner Educational Center.

He served on the Boy Scout Board of Revue, the Garner Public Library Foundation and the Iowa Small Business Employers Board.

He worked very hard to get financial aid for anyone wanting to start a business or plant in our area. He encouraged and assisted people to take leadership roles at the city, county, state and federal levels.

He was one of the original group of "Dads" to get Little League baseball started in Garner. He was active in the Iowa Land Title Association and served as its treasurer from 1978 to 1996.

He was chairman of the Hancock County Republican Central Committee for many years. Wencl felt very honored by being chosen recipient of the Jaycees "Lifetime Achievement" award in January of this year.

He enjoyed his family and spent many hours with his grandchildren. He also loved music, dancing and reading. He was a lifelong student, always wanting to improve his mind.

He is survived by his wife, Catherine; a son, Daniel Kadrlik and his wife, Lori, of Garner; his grandchildren, Thomas, Kendra and Riannan Kadrlik, all of Garner; mother-in-law, Gertrude Flood, of Garner; aunts, Sister Agnes Kadrlik, OSF, and Sister Philothea Kadrlik, OSF, of Rochester, Minn., and Caroline Kadrlik, of Marshfield, Wis.; and several nieces and many cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Milo, Daniel and Stanley Kadrlik.

CLEAR LAKE — Thelma Mathews Best, 88, of Clear Lake, formerly of Thornton, died Tuesday (July 28, 1998) at the Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church, Thornton.

Visitation will be held from noon to 2 p.m. Thursday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, and from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at United Methodist Church, Thornton, and one hour prior to services on Friday at the church.

Interment will follow at the Pleasant View Cemetery in Thornton. The Rev. Jim Gochenouer will officiate.

Thelma was born Oct. 5, 1909, south of Thornton, to Alvin and Nellie (Ashby) Baker. She attended country school and graduated from Thornton High School in 1927.

On Nov. 29, 1928, she was united in marriage to John Mathews. To this union was born a son, Donald, and a daughter, Marilyn, deceased at birth.

They lived in Charles City a short time before moving back to the Thornton area, where they farmed until John’s death in 1957.

In 1959, she was united in marriage to Floyd Best and made their home on a farm near Rockwell. In 1966, Floyd passed away and she returned to her home in Thornton, where she continued to live until this spring, when she moved into Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake.

Thelma loved to play cards, work in her garden and always enjoyed visiting with her many friends and family.

She is survived by her son, Donald Mathews and his wife, Shirley, of Clear Lake; three grandchildren, Kirk Mathews and his wife, Elizabeth, of Hampton, Iowa, Karmen Bauer, of Clear Lake, and Jolene Huinker and her husband, Larry, of West Union, Iowa; seven great-grandchildren, John Mathews, of Forest City, Iowa, Paul Mathews, of Chicago, Ill., Erin Mathews, of Hampton, Iowa, Kellie Wallace, of Floyd, Iowa, Matt Bauer, of Belmond, Iowa, and Amy Huinker and Brandon Huinker, of West Union, Iowa; and one great-great-grandchild, Brittany Vrchoticky.

** Grant Burdette Hunt

NORA SPRINGS — Grant Burdette Hunt, 87, of 24134 277th St., Nora Springs, died Sunday afternoon (July 26, 1998) at the Nora Springs Care Center.

Grant was born on Sept. 5, 1910, in Pymouth, Iowa, the son of Ulysses Grant and Nora Catherine "Pennell" Hunt.

He graduated from Plymouth High School in 1929 and then attended Iowa State Teachers College.

He served as a 3rd Class Radarman in the Navy during World War II. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to North Iowa and was employed by James Refridgeration. He then worked for many local contractors as a carpenter.

Grant was united in marriage to Elizabeth Johanni on May 9, 1936, in Mason City, and to this union were born four children.

He helped found the Hawkeye Harvest Food Bank and the North Iowa Community Credit Union and served on their boards and as the business agent of the Carpenters Union No. 1313.

He was an elder and a deacon for First Presbyterian Church and was a great volunteer there as well as with RSVP and the Weatherization Program.

He enjoyed reading for his enjoyment and read to the elementary children at the Nora Springs-Rock Falls community school "Reading With Grandpa Program" and at the Nora Springs Care Center.

He also participated in the storytelling group in Clear Lake. Grant was known for his volunteerism and giving nature.

Grant will be sadly missed by his wife of 62 years, Elizabeth, of Nora Springs; his two daughters, Joan and her husband, Gary Harms, and Nancy and her husband, Dale Timmerman, all of Forest Lake, Minn.; his two sons, Roger Hunt and his wife, Dee, and Jim Hunt, all of Nora Springs. He also is survived by his eight grandchildren: Margaret "Peg" Morgan, Matthew Hunt, Debbie Meyerhoff, Jamie and Tim Rabe, Allison Russo, Sarah and Nathan Timmerman; five great grandchildren: Erin and Zach Morgan, Marc Meyerhoff, Chantice Hunt and Nicolo Russo.

Luella Emma Smith was born April 3, 1916, near Ledyard.

Survivors include her husband, Roland Smith, of Lakota; one son, Mark Smith, of Lakota; two daughters, Susan Smith, of Clear Lake, and Inez Smith, of Ames; two grandsons; one sister, Verna Schwarz, of Glencoe, Minn.; and two brothers, Glen Klocke, of Ledyard, and Marvin Klocke, of Decorah.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two infant siblings, one son and one brother.

NORA SPRINGS — Mrs. Irving "Harlys" Field, 75, of rural Nora Springs, died Thursday (July 30, 1998) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

** Paul Peter Dierks

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Paul Peter Dierks, 76, of Springfield, passed away at 2:54 p.m. Wednesday (July 29, 1998) at Mercy Villa.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Faith Luthern Church, with burial at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Springfield, Mo.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Greenlawn Funeral Home.

Paul Peter Dierks was born Oct. 30, 1921, in Bloomfield, Neb. His parents were Herman and Emma (Soll) Dierks.

He attended rural school in rural Knox County. He farmed with his father. He moved with the family to North Iowa and continued to farm with his father.

He was married to LaVonne Knapp Johnson in September 1949 and they farmed near Carpenter, Iowa, until January 1967 when they moved to Marshfield, Mo., where they had a poultry and beef operation. Due to poor health, they retired in 1980 and moved near Springfield, Mo.

Paul enjoyed fishing and traveling. He also did some woodworking for several years.

He is survived by his wife, LaVonne; and two sons and their wives, Gary and Kathy Dierks, of Waldorf, Minn., and Edward and Judy Dierks, of Lockwood, Mo.; and five grandchildren, Kari Dierks, of Houston, Texas, Katie and Jon Dierks, of Waldorf, Minn., Julie Dierks, of Lockwood, Mo., and Melanie Dierks, of Springfield, Mo.; two sisters, Mary Beane, of Miami Springs, Fla., and Anna Feley, of Northwood, Iowa; one brother and his wife, Robert and Margery Dierks, of Grovespring, Mo.; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Norman and George; and a daughter, Paula Sue.

Memorials may be given to the Faith Lutheran Church Building Fund or the Pleasant View Fire Department in his memory.

** William "Bill" M. Westberg

CLEAR LAKE — William "Bill" M. Westberg, 72, of 617 N. Shore Drive, Clear Lake, died Wednesday (July 29, 1998) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at United Methodist Church, Clear Lake. Interment will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, and one hour prior to services on Monday at the church.

The family suggests memorials to the Clear Lake Community School Athletic Department.

Bill was born Dec. 4, 1925, in Boone, Iowa, the son of Gust Espe and Esther (Moard) Westberg. He graduated from Boone High School in 1942. Following high school, he enlisted in the United States Navy and served during World War II.

After the service, Bill moved back to Iowa and graduated from the University of Northern Iowa with a degree in education.

He taught at Urbana High School, Urbana, Iowa, and then Klemme where he was in the physical education department and also boys basketball coach.

Bill married Betty Etchen in Klemme. They moved to Clear Lake in the fall 1961 where he was in the physical education department and later athletic director until his retirement in the spring 1987.

Bill officiated many girls softball games and boys basketball games. Bill was an avid Hawkeye fan, Cub fan and enjoyed playing golf and cribbage.

Bill was a member of United Methodist Church, Clear Lake, and the Iowa State Education Association.

Bill is survived by a son, Dr. Mark Westberg and his wife, Rebecca, of Clive, Iowa; and one daughter, Susan Anderson and her husband, Harlan, of Englewood, Colo.; five grandchildren, Jonathan Westberg, Curtis Anderson, Laura Westberg, Meghan Anderson and Ashley Anderson; one sister, Jane Seiffert and her husband, Jerry, of Iowa City, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife in 1976.

** Irene C. Sweet

MASON CITY — Irene C. Sweet, 89, of Mason City, died Wednesday (July 29, 1998) at Mercy Hospital, Cedar Rapids.

A funeral Mass will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. Dennis Cahill and the Rev. Gary Krapfl officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. today at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, with a scriptural prayer service beginning at 7 p.m.

Irene Sweet was born June 25, 1909, in Frazee, Minn., daughter of Casper and Mary (Prem) Junglen.

She married Clifford Skillrud on Aug. 27, 1929. He died in January 1934.

She then married Walter Sweet on Oct. 15, 1938. He died on March 16, 1991.

Irene was a hairdresser for many years and owned and operated salons in Minneapolis and Mason City. She had lived in Cedar Rapids the last several years.

Irene was a generous loving mother, grandmother and friend.

She is survived by one daughter, Betty Weiland and her husband, Jeruld, of Cedar Rapids; eight grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, two brothers, five sisters and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, three sisters and four brothers.

LATIMER — Tanner Pals, 16, of Latimer, died Wednesday (July 29, 1998) at Harbor View Medical Center, in Seattle, Wash., from injuries suffered from a motorcycle accident.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday in the CAL Gym, Latimer.
